Aaron Altherr and Kelly Dugan with two hits a piece for Reading. Severino Gonzalez put up a decent line – 6IP, 3R, 6H, 1HR, 1BB, 3K, 64% strikes. MAG worked a scoreless ninth for the save. JPC hit his fourth HR since joining CLR. OMG. Carlos Tocci with four hits, Andrew Pullin with three, and Zach Green and Mitch Walding both with two for extra bases for Lakewood as they put up eight runs in a loss. Yacksel Rios pitched fairly well, but Will Morris, well, he kind of didn’t pitch ok, I guess. You’ll see what I mean.
Speaking of kind of not pitching ok, I guess, Chris Oliver got shelled for WIL – six of his seven runs were unearned, so take it for what it’s worth, but the guy walked three men and allowed four hits including a homer in 1.2 IP. Also in the “kind of not ok” category, Preston Packrall, who backed up Oliver and gave up six earned runs of his own. You’ll be kind of ok next time, guys.
Gregori Rivero hit his first pro home run for the GCL. You may recall he was given a six-figure bonus two years ago, and hit fairly well last summer as a 17-year-old in the VSL. And Jesus Alastre busted out of a little slump with a 3-4 plus a walk. After a hot start, he’s been good but not great in June and July, OPSing around .765 combined for the two months. For a 17-year-old, I’ll take it.
Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB. http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?sid=milb&org=143&ymd=20140711

Tocci now hitting .246 / .298 / .316. Here is the description of his hits from the recap:
– Carlos Tocci doubles (13) on a line drive to left fielder Gregory Lorenzo.
– Carlos Tocci singles on a line drive to left fielder Gregory Lorenzo.
– Carlos Tocci singles on a line drive to right fielder Lucas Herbst.
– Carlos Tocci singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jared Breen.
So 3 line drives to the outfield.

Last 10 games, 46 PAs for Tocci…326/370/835.
So maybe he has turned the corner and these last 7 weeks we will see a player we have hoped to see..

Yes, definite improvement over last season and early 2014. Now the big key is whether or not he is physically strong enough to avoid his prior problem of late season swoons due to fatigue and probably weight loss. He is making progress.

Seems like Tocci has been around forever and prospect fatigue can easily set in. Took a quick look at the position players in Williamsport and GCL, and only Devi Grullion, Gregori Rivero, Grenny Cumana, Luis Encarnacnion and Jose Pujols are younger then Tocci. Tromp is 2 years older then Tocci.

If the Phillies would have sent 16 year old Tocci to the DSL, then GCL then NYPenn to play as an 18 year old, there would be a totally different perception of him as a prospect.

I assume you mean we would all have a lower opinion of him as a prospect?
(joking, but that would be correct…)

Slight adjustment … The 835 is OPS, not slugging. Slugging is 465, so line is 326/370/465

Yes realized that.
Assumed that one can just deduct the OBP from the OPS and come up with the SLG.
My bad for assuming.

Another HR from Crawford. Good to see him flash power. He already has more HRs in CLW than he did at LWD, but in 39 fewer games.

It’s interesting – while he has predictably struggled a bit at Clearwater, his increased power counters that to the extent that he is an average hitter for the league. Which may not seem like much, but considering he’s playing against players averaging 3 to 4 years older, is a shortstop, and has the tools to be an above average defender .. is pretty darn impressive. Which isn’t news, I guess.

This might be due to the park. Lakewood is a pitcher’s park, whereas Clearwater is much more hitter friendly.

Yeah, that’s likely part of it. And sample size. But he’s on a pace (Clearwater only) for 25 HR over 600 PA. That’s more than anyone really expected.

Crawford’s ISO:
Lakewood: .061 (home) vs. .150 (road)
Clearwater: .149 (home) vs. .088 (road)

I think those numbers don’t include yesterday’s game, so the Clearwater home ISO is now higher.

Off topic here but does anyone know why Clearwater doesn’t place a camera behind home plate and one in the outfield and stream the live games? Most of the the announcers feeds are cut in and out of the feed numerous times during every game. Sometimes have to go to other teams sits to get the feeds?? Any technology in Florida?

Lots to enjoy from last night. Tocci, pullin, knapp, green, Dugan, Altherr all with multi hit games plus several guys developing as possible mlb relievers. Some reason for optimism finally especially if Franco can keep it going after his ofer last night.

Not just saying this after a good night in system but I feel pretty good about the system in general. Going into season there wasn’t a ton of optimism. Granted a large part had to do with several injuries to good prospects but I see a lot of good things going on. I especially am excited about LWood. Pullin, Knapp, Z. Green and recently Tocci have really progressed. Even a guy like Cozens , who has struggled at the plate, has double digit HRs and steals. If he goes on a little power surge he could be a 20/ 20 guy this year. I just hope dead weight like Walding and L. Greene doesn’t effect PT for those guys.
On a side note, what does the CWater OF look like next yr? Cozens, Tocci, and A. Brown?

I think Hiciano gets promoted too (he certainly should in any event). Tocci starts in Lakewood again and gets promoted when somebody moves from Clearwater to Reading.

This is a tough one… From what I see, Cozens, Tocci, Brown, Shortall, and Hiciano should all be up there next year. I don’t think they’d keep Tocci in Lakewood a third year. Maybe Cozens would be the odd man out, but it will show us what org thinks of these guys once the roster is announced.

I can see them starting Tocci at Lakewood until Memorial Day, then promoting him to Clearwater, since he will only be 19-years old at the start of the 2015 season.
If he tailspins form here on out until September then that could be a foregone conclusion. If he really rakes, then maybe Clearwater will beckon for him in the April 2015.

I wouldn’t assume Shortall will start the year in CLR. It’s not like he was a Top 100 pick or something. He was a senior sign.
Even then, they’re probably not cutting Larry Greene, so he’s going to be in CLR, too. They could always play four OF rotation with the DH if they don’t have too many catchers, etc that need PAs from the DH spot – catchers should be Astudillo and Knapp, unless he progresses quickly, and maybe Lino, still. They really could use another A+ team to start the year. Maybe they should just add one. CLR2.
Anyway, I would not be surprised to see someone challenged with a double jump, but who that would be…hmm…could be Hiciano, I suppose. If he gets hitting again in the next couple weeks, I could see them letting him get his feet wet in CLR for a month and planning to push him next year to AA from day 1. I’d say they could use some of the guys at first, but that’s not barren either, with Hoskins around. Maybe he goes to LKW to start and you to get to use 1B to get Greene, Cozens and Hiciano more time in the lineup. Or Cozens could have a terrible month and a half and a bad spring and repeat and Green and Hiciano could share 1B and LF.
Either way, too many OFers is one of those things that sounds like a good problem to have, but at the lower levels, it’s really going to be a challenge to keep them all developing. Someone’s going to be the odd man out, likely, and stuck at LKW for another year. Hard to say right now which one I’d call the favorite. They may just let them all fight it out in the spring with no expectations for anyone. Earn your spot in March, prospect/draft “status” be damned. We’ll see. Might keep them all working a half a notch harder in the off-season if they knew it was going to be a free-for-all in the spring.

No way LGJ is getting promoted to CWater on his performance to date. As a first rounder I think he gets some extra rope so they’ll keep him but he’ll go back to Lwood. Tocci’s placement will depend in his 2nd half numbers. He’s hitting this week which is very encouraging but he’s had good weeks before. He needs to have a good month. My guess is that he’ll start at Lwood with LGJ, Shortall, and Tromp. Cozens, brown and Hiciano will be at CWater hopefully with Quinn pushed to reading

Mitch Walding will either be back in Lakewood for a 3rd try or using some of the Phillies’ scholarship money get ready for a new profession. He won’t be in Clearwater taking anybody’s AB’s.

Would rather see Walding getting the ABs in Clearwater than H Mart. It’s beyond depressing that we’re sending him out there everyday with no hope of succeeding/ improvement.
At 25, repeating High-A for the 3rd time with zero success, I’d say it’s time to move on.

philsphan…IMO was being really blunt about the ‘dead-weight’ comment on Walding and Greene. Frustration can sometimes be extremely intolerable under Amaro’s leadership and decision-making skills over the these last 5 spiralling downward years.
