Box Score Recap – 7/10/2014

Some roster notes for you – Grady Sizemore was called up to the bigs and David Buchanan was optioned to make a 25-man spot for him. The Phils won’t need Buchanan for a while, especially if Cliff Lee is back July 19 as many people are predicting/reporting, (Matt Gelb being the one that sticks in my head as first reporting it as fact, rather than rumor or speculation, but I could be wrong on who had that scoop). Lee went to the 60-day DL to make a 40-man spot for Sizemore, but he’s eligible to return 7-18, so there’s a cut coming next weekend. I’ll guess it’s Tony Gwynn Jr., if they don’t go ahead and pull the trigger on a trade before then, or they could option someone and cut maybe Luis Garcia, I guess. I don’t think Jon Pettibone is eligible to go on the 60-day DL since he’s on the minor league DL right now, not the major league. That, my friends, is a dumb rule.

As for Thursday’s action, Cam Perkins was 2-5 with a triple, his second multi-hit game in a row, as he tried to bust out of his seemingly-endless AAA slump. The Lehigh Valley and Reading bullpens worked a combined eight innings of scoreless ball. Well done. Two more XBH for Brian Pointer, he’s OPSing near .750 now. Wonder if they’d challenge him shortly with a promotion to AA. He’s only been successful at A+ for about 100PAs, so they might still want to get him a little more experience. There’s only seven weeks left in the minor league season, so decisions like may come soon.

Every Lakewood Blueclaw save Carlos Tocci had a hit, led by two a piece from Willians Astudillo and Zach Green. Green’s been good lately – he’s got 16 hits in his last 10 games, five for XBH, and an OPS of .935 over that time. He’s nearly halved his K rate from over 30% last year to about 17% this year in what’s a reasonable ~170 PA sample. not bad. Jia Tromp (7) and Jan Hernandez (4) went deep for Williamsport, and catcher Sean McHugh from Purdue had his first three pro hits. Mitch Gueller was good again – that makes three in a row. He’s struck out 11 and walked just four over his last 18 innings as he tried to figure it out. If he gets comfortable with his pitches and amps up the velocity a little, as Mitch Rupert has reported the club feels is possible, you could see the Ks increase as well. We shall see.

GCL finished off the game that was suspended Wednesday, and played another. Freddy Galvis, Clete Thomas and Tommy Joseph all rehabbed in that second game. @BaseballBetsy reported that Joseph’s wrist was heavily wrapped, though he was behind the plate and not otherwise limited, so that’s good to hear. Franklyn Kilome’s been getting some interest and mentions on Twitter – the 19-year-old RHP seems like someone to watch as he gets stretched out.

  1. Ulises Joachin has a 0.00 ERA from June and into July with 7 saves. In 19 innings spanning 13 games, he’s given up 11 hits with 12 Ks and 8 BBs. We was terrible in April and May but has hit his stride since. His BBs are high but they seem to come in clumps. A couple of rough outings account for most of those BBs. He’s 22 but he started in the DSL in 2011. He jumped to Wlmspt in 2012 and then was sidelined the entire 2013. So 2014 started poorly as you might expect from a guy coming off injury. I’ll keep an eye on him as the year progresses. I’d like to know what his arsenal is so if anyone knows, let us all know.

    1. I saw elsewhere on this site that he has reduced his velocity and has done better (and how!). The commenter was following his progress as you are.

    1. Serna was signed to play in Clearwater, but his steady performance has seen him go to Reading where he seems to be doing well. The Phillies seem to be watching him and moving him as he shows he can play at higher levels.

  2. Each AB for Pointer the last two games has ended in either a hit or a strikeout. I’d love to buy in to his surge, but a .581 BABIP in June makes things look fluky. I keep thinking he’ll end his hot streak with a 4-40 stretch or something.

  3. Considering the down year he’s had, it’s pretty remarkable that Franco is in the top 8 in the International League in doubles — particularly since none of the others ahead of him are within two years of him age-wise.

  4. Aaron Brown has taken one walk in 85 professional plate appearances. I remember reports when he was drafted that he was an aggressive hitter at the plate, but a 1.2% BB rate is not going to fly in the big leagues. Hopefully this is something they work on with him in the offseason.

    1. Yeah you would think he would have a higher walk rate just because younger pitchers in SS ball don’t have the control as more experienced higher level minor league players, but he is hitting .304 and I’m not going to complain about that. Hopefully he is just taking advantages of mistakes over the plate and not going out of the zone too much. With a walk rate that low the only place to go is up haha. I like his upside though and hope he can be the type of hitter scouts project he could be

      1. Being a pitcher himself, you’d think he would be very well of the advantage a hitter has when he gets the pitcher into an unfavorable count.

      2. I asked him about his walk rate when he first got here (he was like 56 Ks, 8 walks at Pepperdine this year) and he said he’s not worried about it. He’s very aggressive and he wants to swing the bat. He plays the game very much like Chase Utley, but even more intesne than even Chase is. My guess is the organization eventually going to make changes to his game which will help his walk rate. But they like to make big adjustments, even in approach at the plate over the offseason rather than in season. Look at how they handled Cody Asche’s struggles in Williamsport as an example.

More concerning for me than his walk rate right now is that he only has three extra-base hits. He’s been pretty much a singles hitter since he got here. His double last night was his first extra-base hit since June 28. His ISO right now is at .063, not exactly thrilling for a big, strong kid like him.

        1. Chase Utley is a fairly patient hitter though. Brown could be one of those guys who has to struggle before he really makes changes to his approach. Cam Perkins made comments earlier this year about admiring Vlad Guererro’s ability to hit pretty much anything and wanting to be a similar type of aggressive hitter. He may have to adjust that approach now, but he got all the way to AAA with it working for him.

          1. I hear everything you are all saying, but the guy has played 25 professional games give or take. Stop it and let nature take its course

  5. It was interesting that Sizemore played a few innings last night in RF with Perkins in CF (and Ruf in LF – a scary LF/CF combo). Its not hard to figure out that the Phils want to know if he can play RF for when Byrd gets traded soon. Zach Green’s success has been very exciting. I haven’t seen him but I have to assume that he finally has been able to cut down on his former very long swing. That bodes very well for his future. They need to get him healthy and get back to playing 3B. Walding unfortunately hasn’t shown much.
RIP to one of our good guys – Steve Susdorf. I hope he gets back to the majors as some point for somebody.

  6. It’s so nice to have things to look forward to when reading the PP boxscores. Seems like 2 months ago, it was very depressing. Leaving Florida tomorrow, but at least I have some games up North to look forward to. Especially psyched to see LW and WP.

In other news, I am surprised that people haven’t been talking about JPC’s slide. I have seen him 5 times over the past 2 weeks and he has not looked good. He is striking out a bunch, not making great contact (save for the HR I saw). He has made 3 errors on ground balls that I have seen and he bobbled a few where he recovered and still got an out. I love watching him throw though- live arm. I am still high on him, but he some adjustments to make before he advances.

    1. He’s a 19 year old in high A ball making adjustments while playing against guys 3, 4, 5 and more years older than he is. If he’s still there and struggling next June, I’ll be concerned, but something tells me he won’t be.

  9. Brad, I know this is not the correct thread but it is the one getting attention so have you heard any news about Ryan Powers Summer League performance and any other last minute draft news about the Phillies draft picks. Thanks in advance.

      1. Thanks for the update on Ryan Powers even though this is not good news for the Phillies but he is finishing his schooling. Maybe he can improve his draft status for next year but he will have his degree,
