  2. Sam McWilliams and Austin Davis made their debuts, and Raywillie Gomez had a triple single in his first appearance at Reading. A hit, a walk and an RBI.

    1. And a Duran (Edgar) sighting in Lehigh Valley! I know I didn’t notice a promotion to AAA for him…but that’s not saying much. Was that reported here on PP.com? I always keep an eye on him in the box scores and it’s good to see he’s one step away from the bigs. Not that he can contribute anything more than what Galvis and/or Hernandez are providing to the Phils. Their offensive skillsets seem very similar.

  3. I’m going to get killed for this but I told you guys to wait and see what JP Crawford does against pitching that he hasn’t seen before (ie better then What Lakewood faces). He obviously has time to gain experience against it but for those who thought he would breeze through A ball to Reading this year was sadly mistaken. Go on kill me . . . I know it’s coming . . .

      1. I seem to remember the consensus being that he might struggle in Hi A to start , but I dont remember many if any saying he was gonna clobber his way through Hi A right to Reading in like 50 ABs

    1. He’s already showing vast improvement at the plate after a very slow start. He scuffled in his brief call-up to Lakewood last season far worse than he is in Clearwater in a similar number of plate appearances. What exactly is there to brag about here? He was placed in a more challenging situation, faced adversity, and is working through it. It’s what the minors are for.

    2. Brilliant prediction. To think a SS, 12 months out of High school would have mediocre offensive numbers in High A. How did you come up with that?

  4. Eric look at the guys this young kid is facing, I have been seeing who he is facing, most guys are 24 or older, on rehab, former first round choices with good numbers. I love that he is facing this level of players, You should see who he gets his at bats against, I think its important, more than his stats right now.

    1. Yeah that’s my point tho. He’s facing a lot better pitching. No one believed me when I said that the pitching he was seeing at Lakewood was pitching he has seen before and was successful against.

By the way I’m not saying he isn’t a good player
/prospect. I was just saying that there was no reason to get real excited this early about him. You know keep it in context.

        1. Yes. I’ve played at the college level (Division 1 at a school who was at the time in Conference USA) and now coach kids who are at these showcases where I go as well. I have the gun on most of these kids who are throwing and have been to lakewood with a gun as well. In the all American show case games he his roteinly facing kids above 90 with aver to plus secondary offerings. Of course some of these guys he was facing at Lakewood have very good stuff but the vast majority sit between 86-90. If you don’t think that’s true go to a handful of Lakewood games with your own gun and see for yourself. Then go to a Perfect Game Tournament (not just a PG Showcase, they are very different), the Area Code games or an UA game (again not just a showcase when ANYOME can go).

          1. So once again anybody can show up league better than the minors I thought we cleared this up before. Maybe since you are a Phillies fan you could point some of those studs who didnt get drafted and completely missed by the millions of scouts out there to the Phillies

          2. When you make a way-out comment like this, the onus is upon you to prove it. Teams don’t deliberately retard the progress of their draftees. What fraction of kids in these showcases become pros? What fraction of those who do out of HS are placed in a full season league? What fraction of those excel. Why do you think there are few to none in that latter category, if the performance of players in the showcases is on a par with that of the average to better players in the SAL league? This is not to say that the showcase pitchers don’t throw hard or have a level of raw talent equivalent to the average pitcher in the SAL league, but the development and refinement of that talent — quality of secondary pitches, control, command, learning how to pitch through frustration and jams won’t be there, apart from the rare, super-mature kid. It is a matter of mental and physical maturation along with further honing of skills through repetition in the extra year or two it takes almost all HS draftees to reach the SAL league. Unless he’s injured, the guys you rave about at the showcases will be more effective pitchers by the time they are playing in the SAL than they were when you saw them. College juniors being drafted into pro baseball will also be more effective, polished performers than they were when you saw them in the showcases. Two to three years of additional maturation, instruction, and repetition does make a difference.

            1. I didn’t read the whole message (didn’t have the time, I will) but to answer some of what you said (and I think I listed this is another post). There were about 15 kids who participated in one showcase game that were drafted in the first 40 picks in 2013.

            2. I’m not saying that they are necessarily better pitchers, I’m saying their stuff is on par with what he’s seen, more so then anything talking about velocity. I’m saying that he isn’t facing any pitching that he hasn’t seen before. As he moves up he’ll start seeing guys who have control, command, better velocity and better secondary offerings (Control is the ability to throw strikes and command is the ability to throw the strikes where you want them ie in, out, up, down etc). I honestly don’t think I’m saying anything crazy.

  5. I agree with you eric. I would of like him to stay at Lakewood all year. He was only hitting .295 when they promoted him after his torrid start.

    1. I would have been fine with and thought they promoted him a tad early, but not now I’m glad they did. Considering the age difference, if he is able to show improvement the rest of the season it will prove a good move

  6. No talk of Nola’s outing? Asleep at the wheel? Its the biggest news of the day (other than the new $900K signing). Nola bounced back in a big way and showed what he’s about. I’m also encouraged by Cozens bouncing back. He has a long way to go but its a start.

    1. For the second time this week, a Phils minor leaguer has gotten a hitter/pitcher of the night honor from BP. Zach Green earlier this week (after his 4 for 8 with a HR game) and Nola was given the pitcher honor for yesterday’s performance. And maybe Yacksel was a competitor for the same award. On the down side, I guess Ruf needs more rehab appearances, after an 0 for 3 game in the GCL.

  7. Do you think Williamsport considers going to a 6 man pitching rotation. Imhof and Oliver are probably on a innings limit so give them 5 days between starts

    1. Gotta admit Im no huge fan of his but it would be cool to see him get a cup of coffee with the Phillies this year
