Box Score Recap – 6/17/2014

Cody Asche was 3-3 with a double on his rehab assignment, and Leandro Castro hit his fourth home run of the year as Lehigh Valley came from behind to beat Charlotte. Cesar Jimenez, B.J. Rosenberg and Luis Garcia each tossed scoreless innings of relief. Logan Moore hit his first AA home run, and Jake Fox hit two to give him three in four games for Reading thus far. Kelly Dugan and Zach Collier returned from the DL; Collier had two hits and stole a base. Nefi Ogando got hit around for four runs on four hits and two walks.

Art Charles had two triples as Clearwater blanked Lakeland. Jeb Stefan allowed nine baserunners in six scoreless innings, striking out five. Jia Tromp had three XBH including two home runs, and Cord Sandberg and Rhys Hoskins each had two XBH, Sandberg including his first bomb of the year. He’s got nine hits in five games. Mitch Gueller allowed two hits and three walks and struck out three in four scoreless innings. And Bryan Martelo had his first professional hit in the Dom Rep. Only took him 20 PAs. Let’s hope the next one comes a little sooner.

I included the SAL All-Star Game box – all three Lakewood hitters were on base, though J.P. Crawford struck out three times and both he and Samuel Hiciano were charged with errors. Cody Forsythe worked a perfect inning for the North Division. The game ended in a tie after the South scored twice in the top of the 10th, then Crawford walked, Hiciano hit a double to move J.P. to third, and both would later score. WIllians Astudillo had a chance to win the game with a man in scoring position but he grounded out to end the game.

    1. No kidding. It is nice to see him get a few knocks early on. He appeared to have a pretty good sense for the strike zone in the GCL, so let’s hope that carries over. That is a hard tool to learn, so let’s hope it is innate. That will be the main thing I look for this year in Sandberg.

  1. Great night for the system.

Cord of course, is the box score hero of the day. Let’s see this continue, it’ll be fun to watch. If Cord & JP become two solid starters that’s already a decent draft.

The 2015 draftees are already paying dividends – it would be great to see Rhys and Stank quickly blossom into actual future major leaguers at 1B and 2B. They don’t need to become anything special, just capable professional ballplayers. Now that Imhof signed I want to see him out there as soon as possible. If he’s able to strike out minor league hitters anywhere near his college clip, he’ll change a lot of minds in a hurry. It’s not just deception with him- I think he utilizes high elevation, with his 6’6″ height and extreme overhand release point to generate strong downward plane action on his pitches. The deception comes from the difficulty reading the downward trajectory of his pitches- it gives additional life to his stuff and allows him to get away with avg velocity, a slurvy breaking pitch and less than ideal placement, by cutting into the hitters reaction time. It worked great in college. Imhof has some upside due to his lack of time on the mound. Starting to really like this draft class but need to see these good numbers I’m expecting. I wouldn’t mind another college heavy draft next year, maybe with some position players. That way the 2014 and 2015 draftees would join a few members of that Lakewood crew in their development, and all reach the majors around 2017. It would be the beginnings of a team, but adding 3 or 4 more prospects at the trade deadline would be a big help. They don’t need to be top 50 guys, just in the 5-10 range in their organizations and hopefully we get enough of them that at least one contributes at a high level, and another sticks on the roster…it would be absolutely phenomenal to acquire a couple projected mid rotation arms, a slugging corner of, a catcher who can hit a little, middle infielder and hard thrower destined for the pen if we trade virtually everybody. I think it’s doable if we take on a lot of salary, throw in enticingly cheap roster players like Diekman and Bastardo to seal the deals and don’t expect too many advanced prospects. Thankfully, some of the teams rumored to be interested(Red Sox, Giants) have positional redundancies that make this a feasible proposition. I’d even deal with the Yankees, because I like what Aaron Judge is doing this year. Between the O’s and Tigers, could we get a young pitcher like Hunter Harvey or Jake Thompson for Paps? (if we pay most his contract and add a useful throw in) I got the deadline bug…

    1. I don’t know, you could argue that Tromp (or even Asche) was the box score hero of the day. Tromp, like Hiciano, is a guy to keep our eye on.

    2. Your “fire sale” scenario is much more realistic than most, but still I think ignores a significant problem. Before talking about it, though, let me make clear that I do think the team should be active sellers this year, and are in a better position to do so than last year. But not a “trade virtually everybody” scenario.

Why not? The same reason I posited last year, only more so. There IS a difference – in terms of attendance and, maybe more to the point, in terms of prospect development – between a 110 loss team and a 90 loss team. And while the team may be headed for worse than 90 losses anyway, 110 losses is a realistic probability if they “trade virtually everyone.” Do that, and this team could be historically bad. Just look at the lack of decent young talent at the major league level, and lack of good prospects (with a couple of exceptions) in the high minors.

Now, in reality if the team really took a fire sale approach, they probably would then sign a bunch of mediocre free agents to somewhat stem the bleeding and bridge the gap to our better prospects. And I guess one could make a case for that approach. I don’t think it would be terribly popular with most fans.

  2. Sucks to see Franco back to going 0 for after a 2 hit day. Was hoping he would carry it over. Sandberg keeps rolling. He’s a guy to be real excited about. Yes. I know it’s extremely early but we need something to get excited about. Also, good to see Dugan back. Was getting antsy about him coming back.

  3. Cord is beginning to give me some hope that all is not lost when it comes to the future of this franchise. I look at him and wonder what the ceiling truly is for him.

  4. Asche is hitting around .650 on his rehab , do you wait a few games for Brignac to continue his hot streak? who goes down ?
Hard not to like checking Sandbergs linescore daily

    1. Perhaps it is time to get Ned Colletti and Brian Sabean to start the bidding for Chase Utley….both Reid Brignac and Cesar Hernandez can play 2nd.
Add Ache back at third. Lets go Ruben….we need some youthful talent, hate to see Chase go, but Chase also deserves a chance to play for a WS contender in his last 2/3 years….sorry this is a GenDisc statement more or less

    1. On the Phils broadcast they said Nola threw 28 pitches went 2 innings 1H and 2Ks…..also, Asche needs to get back to the bigs yesterday, he is crushing the ball right now, and even though there is a minuscule amount of us who believe this team is a playoff caliber squad, they are only 5 games out right now.

        1. Thats his hometown team…he will have family at the games.
I can only assume Ryno will play him.

    1. I don’t get it, why on earth would you want Ryne Sandberg to be less than completely honest in his assessment of players? Because it might hurt Cody Asche’s feelings? I think it’s rare enough as it is that you get any kind of useful information out of managers that we should be grateful when it happens.

      1. Yes, hurting your players’ feelings is generally not a recipe for success. Also, letting the rest of the industry know your exact thoughts reduces your negotiating ability.

  5. When Crawford starts playing in the FSL, don’t be surprised to see him struggle. I’m asking everyone to keep a level head about it.

    1. I’m more concerned about the evolution of his entire game – keeping up the walk rate, reducing errors, increasing percentage of successful steals, and keeping K rate down. If he does those things, he should be fine. It would be nice if he could put on another 5-10 pounds of muscle in the off season, as he would be benefitted greatly by being able to offer even average power.

      1. I guess primarilly it is the age thing…Crawford at 19 and Quinn at 2, though Quinn’s past injures have prevented more exposure.

  6. phillies swept The Braves if they stay around 5 games out nobody is going anywhere.the core of the team was told if they don’t start hitting there sitting. That was when the Cubs series that the meeting took place. If they are going to trade it will be pap, Bryd, or Lee or Mayberry.the bullpen is the best in baseball over the last month.the phillies are 7 and 3 in there last 10. Plus other teams are trading to the Cubs are offering there hole pitching staff I think.I just don’t see a fire sale I see trades I think Papelbon and Lee plus Bryd can bring some good prospects. I’m glad to see 3rd base prospects 1 in the Majors and the other at the door. Plus Z Green , J Herandez and T Williams , Luis E down on the farm.

  7. To all who like the idea of a fire sale, I have only 1 question. What trade in which the Phils traded a veteran have you liked over the last several years? Lee to the Mariners? Pence to the Giants? Victorino for Ethan Martin?

I think they need to completely overhaul the roster BUT not until they overhaul the front office. I would rather watch Chase, Jimmy, Hamels and Lee on a mediocre team the next couple of years then watch the absolute dreck that will shoved down our throats as “prospects”.

Can’t wait for Aumont to be in the back-end of the bullpen and Tyson Gillies manning center
