Leandro Castro was 2-4 with two doubles and a walk. He turns 25 Sunday, and I think he’s next in line for an outfield spot at this point. He’s improved his game this year and I’d say he’s earned a shot ahead of any of the other options. Hoby Milner struck out six in seven innings, and Kyle Simon and Seth Rosin worked scoreless innings of relief to beat Altoona. Carlos Tocci stays hot with two hits on the night. I didn’t include the box from the FSL All-Star game, but I can tell you Art Charles was 0-1 with a K as a reserve.
Cord Sandberg had two his as well, his second straight multi-hit game. He also stole a bag. 20-year-old Venezuelan Ricardo Pinto struck out eight in 5.2IP in his stateside debut. Mitch Rupert had him touching 95 with his fastball. Things kind of fell apart for him in the sixth, but an eye-opening performance nonetheless.

Does anyone besides me consider Hoby Milner a legit prospect? Guy throws hard.

Milner does not throw hard. 86-88, may touch 89 or 90 early but that is it, pitches at 86-88

Milner’s last three starts; 19.1 Inn. 2 BB 18K. Looking like a prospect.

His K/BB is kinda bad this year. Or at least not good enough. He does pretty well against lefties though. Maybe he has something going as a lefty reliever.

What were the reports on him in XST? Was he hitting the ball consistently? Obviously most players can get lucky and collect four hits in their first two games, but I’m trying to draw some non-Crawford silver linings out of this season for the system and get excited about this guy. ‘Cuz he’s all about upside …

He started out making inconsistent contact, relying on his speed for most of his hits. He is not afraid to bunt, and does it well. I had heard toward the end of XST that he was hitting around .360. That surprised me. But, in the last couple of weeks he was striking the ball much better – more line drives and some hard ground balls through the holes. Keep in mind that this is the first season where he has concentrated solely on baseball.

Obviously it is a limited sample size, but Cord Sandberg is looking good. He definitely has good speed, as he already has a bunt single, an infield single, and a stolen base so far this season. While it’s definitely a pipe dream at this point, Sandberg could be an absolute stud.

Reminder: Cord Sandberg is 7 months older than Carlos Tocci. Last year Sandberg OPSed .585 in the GCL. 2 years ago Tocci OPSed .629 in the GCL.

Not that I’m down on Sandberg — I said earlier in the week that he could be in our top 10.

Only middle of June but the unknown retreads are already piling up on Lehigh Valley and Reading rosters. Jake Fox, Rusty Ryal, Matt Hoffma, Addison Maruszak,Anthony Phillips,Everett Williams, Nate Spears. How can our top 2 minor league teams have such a dearth of talent? Hopefully after draftees get assigned there will be some promotions.

Carlos Tocci has never hit a home run in professional baseball. Sandberg struggled last year but at least he hit two out.
Being a 6’2″ 160 lb outfielder, Tocci absolutely needs to gain weight to retain his prospect status. Its almost like he’d be better off spending this year sitting on the couch drinking beer and eating pizza. A guy that skinny won’t be able to handle top end pitching. Not only will he struggle to hit the ball hard, he’ll get the bat knocked out of his hands by hard & heavy fastballs. He’s on a little hot streak but could hit a wall if he doesn’t bulk up…on the bright side, a lot of people are skinny at that age and very few remain that way, regardless what they do.
Back to Sandberg- obviously very SSS but it’s great to see one of the system’s best athletes succeed in this early going. With a strong season Cord has an inside track at a top 5 org ranking and even mixed results put him in the top 10.
I have high hopes that a few members of this 2014 draft class will bust out in the early going. Many already passed a test akin to the low Minors by excelling at D-I, which many of past early picks probably wouldn’t have done. Even our 7th rounder, the reputed glove only Emmanuel Marrero, won SWAC POY after hitting .330 with some pop. I doubt Galvis or Canelo would have done that.
Relying on college production isn’t the ideal way to evaluate prospects, but its a comforting fall back approach given the lack of confidence in the Phillies scouting and development. Minimizing risk is a sound strategy when preparing to turn the page.

I wonder what the story on Elniery Gacia is. As the youngest pitcher on the W-port roster I had kind of hoped he would be starting, but I guess he’s in the ‘pen for now. David Whitehead gets the start today; another guy I know nothing about except that he’s been hurt/rehabbing since before the Phils drafted him.

A missing piece of our 2013 draft makes a start today. David Whitehead had TJ surgery prior to the 2013 draft. He was a college junior and our 34th round selection. He is listed as a big righty: 6′-4″ and 240 pounds. Anyway, he has the start for Williamsport today (Sunday). To be starting, and this early in the rotation (although 2014 draftees may leap ahead of him next week) say that at least he’s healthy and that the Phillies have been at least somewhat impressed by him in XST. He’ll send me to the box score tonight to see how he does.

He now has a no hitter through 6 IP. Gave up 2 BB. I doubt they ask him to go much longer. Anybody know what his FB velocity has been tonight?

Unfortunately, they still don’t have a gun here in Williamsport. I’ll ask afterward what they had him charted at.

I was at the lhv game last night in Rochester and man they did not play good at all. Only two prospects I saw were Franco and Perkins since as of now gillies and Castro are not really prospects.
Franco didn’t have a very good night and the last 3 innings didn’t eve look like he wanted to be there. He made two errors. One a high bouncer that hit him right in the heel of the glove. And one that he should have had, maybe it wasn’t an error, down the line hit not that sharply under his glove for a double. I was 5 rows behind visitors dugout. The play down the line he was just bending attempt waist and he didn’t seem to have much lower body flexibility. Watching him play reinforced the idea that he is goin to be at 1st in a couple years. On a good note he had 3 decently hard hit balls, one to the warning track that showed he was still making loud contact.
As for perkins, he is the smallest 6’3″ 24 yr old I have ever seen. Looks more like a 17 yr old. Does he even shave. Well anyway, his at bats weren’t that good and his defense in RF was probably worse. Hopefully in the next few months he gets used to AAA.
One more note, although gillies didn’t hit at all he made a great sliding catch coming in. Probably the best defensive play of the night for either team. Just wish he could make some contact. He would be a good 5th or 6th outfielder.

David Whitehead was at 87-93 with his fastball today, according to pitching coach Aaron Fultz. Could see he would amp it up in certain situations, so my guess is he was sitting consistently around 90. Saw a report from the Cap Cod League in 2012 that said he was 90-93 with his fastball then. So he’s gotten most of, if not all of, his velocity back since surgery.

Thats good news on Whitehead’s velo reports…he is 22-years old but with the TJ behind he could fast track.
