The minor league depth that the Phillies have currently sits on the major league bench (Hernandez, Brignac, Cedeno) leaving very little at the upper reaches of the organization. At the lower half, good progression and progress by Pullin and Crawford and to an extent Pullin.
Lehigh Valley
Andres Blanco, 30, Re-signed as free agent in 2014; .244/.327/.302 in 86 AB’s; 0HR 9RBI; 1SB; 9%bb/18% k rates; 24 games at SS without an error; 5 games at 2B without an error; Blanco spent a considerable amount of time on the DL with an oblique injury. He is outstanding with the glove, and mediocre with the bat.
Nate Spears, 29, SIgned as a free agent in 2014; Hitting .167 in 6 AB’s for Lehigh Valley.
Matt Tolbert, 32, Re-signed as free agent in 2014; .210/.290/226 62 AB’s between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 0HR 1RBI; 1SB. 7 games at 2B with 3 errors (.857); 6 games at 3B without an error; 4 games in the OF without an error; Tolbert has spent the last month on the DL with a broken finger. When healthy, he is an extra middle infielder for the ‘Pigs.
Freddy Galvis, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2006; Hitting .143 in 7AB’s for Lehigh Valley before going down with a broken collarbone on May 11th. Expected to be out another month.
Reading
Carlos Alonso, 26, Phils 32nd round pick in 2010; .284/.376/.431 in 218AB’s; 6HR 18RBI; 4/7SB; .230 vs. LHP; .313 vs. RHP, .273 with RISP; 12%bb/15%k rates; Hitting .425 in June. 34 games at 2B with 3 errors (.982); 23 games at 3B with 4 errors (.937); Alonso simply continues to put up numbers above most in the organization. As a 32nd round pick, he has had alot to overcome to get to this point. Its time to really notice the consistent solid numbers, albeit at age 26.
Albert Cartwright, 26, Acquired from Houston in 2010; .283/.341/.382 in 191 AB’s; 3HR 11RBI; 13SB; .267 vs. LHP; .293 vs. RHP; .289 with RISP; 7%bb/22%k rates; Hitting .289 since May 1. 27 games at 2B with 3 errors (.978); 21 games in the OF with 1 error (.980); Cartwright has been solid all year and showing speed that is making a difference on the base paths.
Edgar Duran, 23, Signed as free agent in 2007; .258/.313/.338 in 198 AB’s; 3HR 15RBI; 3/9SB; .275 vs. LHP; .248 vs. RHP; .167 with RISP; 7%bb/11%k rates; 54 games at SS with 14 errors (.959); 4 games at 2B with 1 error; Numbers better than I expected them to be for Duran thus far. Having some unexpected issues with the glove.
Clearwater
Angelo Mora, 21, SIgned as a free agent in 2010; .225/.295/.277 in 191AB’s; 1HR 14RBI; 1/7SB; .211 vs. LHP; .231 vs. RHP; .342 with RISP; 9%bb/19%k rates; 32 games at 2B with 6 errors (.966); 24 games at SS with 4 errors (.965); Extremely pedestrian numbers for Mora.
KC Serna, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .288/.326/.408 in 250AB’s; 3HR 20RBI; 8/13SB; .288 vs. LHP; .288 vs. RHP; .231 with RISP; 4%bb/12%k rates; 24 games at 2B with 3 errors (.979); 9 games at SS with 1 error (.981); 28 games at 3B with 5 errors (.935);Serna has been as consistent as they come all year on a poor Clearwater team.
Jair Morelos, 20, SIgned as a free agent in 2010; Hitting .111 in 9 AB’s this year. 3 games at 2B with 1 error.
Roman Quinn, 21, Phils 2nd round pick in 2011; .253/.317/.333 in 75 AB’s; 1HR 3RBI; 3/6 SB; 4%bb/21%K rates. 17 games at SS with 3 errors (.954); After a quicker then expected recovery from his torn Achilles, Quinn has been up and down with the bat and on the basepaths. Not unexpected after missing close to a year. The talent is clearly there but as with many, it’s a matter of developing it. It appears the development will come in CF as opposed to SS after a tweet by Quinn himself announcing the move back to the OF a few days ago.
Lakewood
ANdrew Pullin, 20, Phils 5th round pick in 2012 draft; .251/.315/.372 in 223AB’s; 6HR 26RBI; 5/10SB; .208 vs. LHP; .265 vs. RHP; .268 with RISP; 8%bb/20%k rates; Hitting .271 since May 1. 59 games at 2B with 14 errors (.944); Since getting off to a slow start, Pullin has been consistently producing and improving. Defense improving but needs work.
JP Crawford, 19, Phils 1st round pick in 2013 draft; .301/.402/.416 in 219AB’s; 3HR 19RBI; 11/18SB; .231 vs. LHP; .323 vs. RHP; .196 with RISP; 14%bb/14%k rates; 57 games at SS with 12 errors (.955); Overall an outstanding season thus far with a raised eyebrow on the average with RISP. I would expect that Crawford will be moving to Clearwater within the next 2-3 weeks.
Enmanuel Serra, 21, SIgned as a free agent in 2011; Hitting .318 in 22 AB’s for Lakewood. 4 games at SS with 1 error; 3 games at 2B without an error.
Williamsport
Malquin Canelo, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2011
Robinson Torres, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2010
Why does Alonso get no love? Is it his age? He seems like he has been consistent since getting drafted at every stop, playing 2B and 3B. Does he have another position that he can play to make him more of a utility player?

typical Phillies FO.Anybody drafted in the 32nd round cannot be more than a throwaway.Same mentality that keeps Ruf a minor leaguer and fails to believe a FA signee like Moss can excel.

To give them credit, that’s pretty much all that’s left in the 32nd round – you’re hoping to get a useful guy for the minors and maybe get lucky and he becomes Marco Scutaro (late bloomer, not much of a prospect through his 20s).

Age yes, and probably also his lack of power and speed. Sort of reminds me of Susdorf in that way. The power is up this year, but, it’s Reading so take it with a grain of salt. He had a small write-up in BP the other day that said his glove was below average, too. Also “good raw power” but “limited game power projection”.

Below average glove? Alonso won the 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove Award for second base. I think he commited 2 errors and had a fpct around .996.

Fielding Percentage does equate to glove quality – range is far more important.

I think I remember him playing some OF last year. Agree, this guy has been very solid, and consistently so over the last three years, We seem to have a bias against moving people upward if original pre-draft scouting reports and draft position were not stellar- regardless of their on-field performance once in minors.

I’ve seen him play SS and LF in addition to 2B and 3B.

I could see Alonso or Cartright get promoted to AAA with Serna taking their place at AA. There were some college infielders drafted that they have to place (CWater?) plus they have to decide when to promote Crawford. My guess is that Quinn will continue to play SS for a while longer. Pullin and Crawford are obviously the names to follow in this group.

I could see Marrero, the SS they drafted, going to Lakewood so Canelo can get the ABs in Williamsport, with Crawford going to Clearwater. I assume Stankiewicz will play 2B for W-port. Serna has gotten better as the season’s gone on and has hit really well this month, but I’m not sure if he’s ready for AA. He can play 3B too, so he could stay in Clearwater.

I love this video. He’s so smooth in the field and, like so many great athlese, his body never seems out of postion or uncoordinated. I love the play where the ball is hit up the middle and he fields and releases the ball almost simultaneously. I also like his fairly large frame and I really like the swing too. I’m hoping he can put on another 15 pounds of muscle or so – I think he has Jose Reyes type upside as a player.
