Vance Worley homered against Lehigh Valley. That’s probably a metaphor or a parable or something. Jeb Stefan sturck out five and allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings for CLR – Roman Quinn homered there, and Jim did a great write-up of the game earlier.
Pullin, Hiciano and Grullon with multi-hit games for Lakewood, but Drew Anderson left after just one 15-pitch inning. Ominous. And Jesus Alastre was 2-4 with a triple and three runs scored for the VSL squad. We’re getting closer to the New York Penn League season – Williamsport’s media day is Wednesday.

In other news Jonathan Singleton hits a grand slam tonight. We gave up a star #pissed

He also struck out 3 times. Lets not get riled up just yet.

Yeah, but you combine the power, the plate discipline and the hit tool and, assuming he doesn’t walk around stoned (a truly serious risk with him given his history), the likelihood is that he will be, in a reasonable worst case scenario a 3 WAR player, most likely a 4-5 WAR player and perhaps even a real star. This trade will haunt the franchise for years – Larry called it in real-time as it was happening and he was spot on right. If Cosart becomes an average starter and Santana becomes an average regular (that’s a fairly optimistic projection given his strikeout issues), it’s a true franchise-altering blunder because those players would have provided cheap performance that would have allowed the team to fill in gaps with more expensive players.

And it sure as hell doesn’t help when Brandon Moss, a guy we RELEASED, has already hit 17 homers with a decent average and a good OBP. The talent evaluation on this team seems pretty darned bad to me.

Moss HR total since ’13: 46
The guy we still shove out there every day in LF even though he wont amount to s#!t (one good month last year and a fluke AS bid don’t do nothing for me): 31
Oh and Moss hit another 21 in 84 games in ’12 btw while good ol Dommer had 5 in 50 something.
But we gave Moss a solid 6 PH ABs in September to prove himself, and he didn’t do anything, so buh bye. Also, Moss can manage to play more than one position without screwing up, something Brown still hasn’t managed to do.
Only picture RAJ has managed to paint is a big s#!t stain.

For the record, pretty much EVERY team had given up on Moss. He was about to retire before catching on with the A’s.

Yes, but he performed well for the Phillies in the minors. Granted, nothing that would have made you think he was capable of this, but he earned some type of a shot.

No doubt it’s a terrible trade, but it’s really hard to be a consistent 4+ WAR player as a poor defensive first baseman and a bad baserunner.

Agreed, but I think he’s probably going to be a 5-6 WAR offensive player.

Why is no one mentioning Charlie Manuel and his incessant crying for a RH bat behind a declining Ryan Howard for at partial fault. Also, remember the GM only puts the players on the field and it is up to the manager to use them properly. Charlie was badly outmanaged from 2009 to 2011. If Charlie would have platooned maybe Moss would still be here. Catch and everyone, please google and read the Philadelphia Magazine article called “The Phantom Five” a very interesting article about the Phillies ownership.

As bad as the Pence trade was and in referrence to people predicting how poorly we made out at the time, go back to each trade and you will find post after post after post criticizing the GM for giving away the farm for Blanton, Halladay, Lee, Oswalt, Lidge, etc………..without question as bad as the Pence deal is today, if we win the 2011 World Series the sting would be a lot less……at the time we needed a RH bat to protect Howard, the 2nd half of the year Pence ripped the ball for us…………I will always look back at the 2011 NLDS as the moment when Cliff Lee came up small……..staked with a 4-0 lead against Chris Carpenter in a series that we could have given them the death blow by going up 2-0 in a best of 5, Lee who was magical in the 2009 & 2010 postseasons, got shelled and we lose that game, and the rest is history……………Ruben has to go, but Singleton is striking out a ton right now, so if you are going to post whenever he hits a HR, also list his K rate as well.

Good call, Lee got staked to a big lead and gave it up.

Baseball is unpredictable sometimes. Lee pitched well but the Cardinals got weak hit after weak hit in that game. That’s why the postseason is such a crapshoot. Also, I don’t think any significant portion of people were upset about trading for Lee or Halladay. Blanton, maybe so, and I was one of them. The Pence trade was folly from the second it happened. A player we didn’t need at too high a price to pay.

Especially when Bourn was traded right after that for next to nothing. We all thought it was a bad trade when it was Singleton, Cosart, and Zeid. When Santana was found out to be TPTBNL, bad became awful. I do agree however that winning in 2011 would have made the trade more acceptable. And then trading Pence for nothing to be able to spend money on…. What exactly did we spend that money on?? MAG I guess….

Exactly – Santana was like a dagger to the heart.

I hadn’t even realized Santana is hitting .291 with 8 home runs as a 21 year old in AAA. ouch. franchise killing trade that will go down in infamy. we’ll read about it on worst ever trades lists for the rest of our lives.

No no no the Pence deal was different. The other deals were somewhat disappointing but the Pence trade was downright tragic from day 1. Despite the Phillies owning the best record in baseball with him in the lineup, I literally looked away most of the time Pence came up to bat, to avoid being reminded of the decade of bad baseball on the horizon. Even back when we were defending WFC and had the best record in baseball, it was clear that Philadelphia’s blissful summers were not sustainable. When Rube dealt Singleton, Cosart and Santana, the WIP set celebrated, while smart fans knew Phillies gave away their chance to stay competitive long-term.
My dad essentially gave up on the Phillies after the 2009 season because of the Pence trade, cancelling season tickets and refusing to give them any money, or even watch games on TV in protest. He doesn’t even follow prospects that closely; just disagrees wholeheartedly with their philosophy.(same goes for the Flyers) I went from watching every game, to a few here and there, to hardly any at all. I think I watched more innings of college ball than the Phillies this year. Since 2010, my interest in the Phillies has primarily involved their prospects, draft picks and praying for a fire sale that might shorten the rebuilding process. We’re in for up to a decade of bad baseball, until our minimum 3-4 years of top 5 draft picks pays off. Anyone and everyone should be traded to accelerate the process.

assuming Moss makes the all star team this year, that would make vogelsong, grilli, and moss all guys released by lehigh valley who went on to make one.
i know we are beating a dead horse, and i know this is a GD topic, but still, its unreal. i dont care what year it happened in, the people who caused it to happen are still making decisions for the team.

Not to be disrespectful but Grilli and Moss went through two or three different organizations before landing with the Phillies. You do remember that the 2011 team won 102 games. Grilli has been effective but he spends as much time on the DL as he does on the field. Moss was the LH version of Jayson Werth but Charlie Manuel never believed in platooning. He is a good player but everyone is making him out to be Mickey Mantle and he is not-just having a great year which is way above his career numbers.

Grullon is impressing for sure for his age and the level.
Would really be a boost to the system if he progresses at Lakewood, and starts next year at Clearwater.

Agreed. It seems like he controls the zone when he is at the plate but his quality of contact is poor. Does anyone have any more info or knowledge about his hitting ability? Age for level and defensive position are both in his corner as a prospect, so that is a good start.

It’s definitely good to see Grullon at least holding his head above water at age 18 in a league where most guys are ~20. Hard for us to see whether his defense has been as good as everyone says. Hopefully we can get an update soon. Overall, really encouraging half year for him in my opinion.

Yes it did happen a few years ago but considering the players involved are finally making major league contributions, it is still relevant. Last time I checked Ruben Amaro is still GM of the team so while this is just one trade, it does add up to paint a picture of the state of the team under him.

Yes. The major league Phillies don’t stink in 2014 because of errors they made last winter or over the winter before 2012. The problems are a lot older than that in origin. An organization doesn’t fix its problems without finding out what caused them. To do that, we have to go back more than a few years. As you say, the Phillies management is the same so understanding mistakes going back more than the last few years certainly makes sense. The organization is running out of it’s common excuses for the farm. It was several years back that the message was ‘don’t worry the strength is in the low minors’. As we’ve seen this season, from the Lakewood and CLW results, not nearly as much as the team and its apologists in the media have suggested.

Yeah, folks keep talking about Adam Dunn comparison, but having seen him in person, Cozens is built a lot more like Jayson Werth than Adam Dunn. He’s not a big boned, lunky guy – he looks pretty athletic to me and I don’t see why he couldn’t remain a corner outfieler for the forseeable future. Also, it seems

like every time I look at the box score he’s getting more extra base hits or stealing bases.
As for Roman Quinn, folks have to be patient. He just doesn’t have a lot of at bats yet at any level. For him to play 65 games last year at Lakewood, get injured this offseason, come back and semi-recover at a higher level, while still mastering a new position and switch hitting is pretty miraculous. Hopefully they don’t do something dumb like trade him because they have Crawford. Quinn’s still a heck of a prospect.

I am impressed with Crawford right now. His last ten games have been weak offensively, but he is still keeping his strikeouts down and walk rate up. Hopefully a few of those balls start to fall again for him.

Anyone with BP subscription? What do they say about Quinn in their 10 pack?

That he looked really good defensively and that he can stay at shortstop. Can he hit? He’s better left handed. He has a contact oriented approach so there is doubt whether he will be a regular major leaguer.

For what it’s worth, saw a tweet from Jason Parks a few days ago that said Altherr is essentially not a prospect. I’m paraphrasing, but he said he has the physical look of a major league prospect, but doesn’t have the bat speed to hit higher velocities consistently. Parks was at one of Readings recent series.

Well he’s recovering from a bad wrist, I’d imagine that could sap some bat speed. I’m not giving up on him yet.

If your not growing…your dying. You have a leadership problem. From Fortune 500 companies to ball parks. Time to look at the history of the system and training and the farm system over the past few years and ask yourself about the leadership of and daily aspect of this organization. It speaks for itself. Take an in depth look at the results, leadership, and daily progress or lack thereof. How can athletes with talent and desire to win and excel with passion and energy achieve so less? How can you be so totally wrong with every pick?
