Lehigh Valley
Leandro Castro, 25, Signed as a free agent in 2007; .249/317/.367 in 169 AB’s; 4/7 SB; 8%bb/17%k rates; .216 vs. RHP; .263 vs. LHP; .277 with RISP; Hit .255 in May; 48 games in the OF with 6 errors (.946); 4 OF assists; Castro has greatly improved his walk and strikeout rate, which were an area of huge concern in years past. That said, he has been mediocre thus far, and his fielding is always an adventure.
Tyson Gillies, 25, Acquired from Seattle in 2009; .224/.280/.315 in 143 AB’s; 2HR 10RBI; 3/5SB; 4%bb/26%k rates; .147 vs. LHP; .248 vs. RHP; .219 with RISP; .242 in May. 36 games in the OF with 1 error (.991); 2 OF assists; Just flat out lousy. A little less lousy in May.
Steve Susdorf, 28, Phils 19th round pick in 2008 draft; .281/.343/.338 in 160 AB’s; 0HR 14RBI; 3/5SB; 9%bb/17% k rates; .257 vs. LHP; .288 vs. RHP; .286 with RISP; .322/.392/.402 in May. 20 games in the OF without an error; 1 OF assist; After a very slow start, Susdorf is now hitting in the manner he is capable which is high average with little power. He gives you a professional AB every time.
Tyler Henson, 26, Re-signed as a free agent in 2014;.280/.330/.434 in 182 AB’s; 4HR 21RBI; 12/16 SB; 7%bb/31%k rates; .333 vs. LHP; .256 vs. RHP; .250 with RISP; .277/.333/.455 in May. 32 games in the OF with 1 error (.985); 4 OF assists; Has also played 16 games at 2B with 1 error (.981); 4 games at 3B without an error; and 1 game at SS with 1 error; Henson has played all over the diamond, but primarily in the OF and has been Lehigh Valley’s most consistent offensive performer, providing gap power and speed. He is striking out alot, but what he has brought to the table this year has far outweighed that negative.
Clete Thomas, 30, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .259/.372/.353 in 116AB’s; 1HR 10RBI; 8/9 SB; 15%bb/23%k rates; .265 vs. LHP; .256 vs. RHP; .200 with RISP. 33 games in the OF with 3 errors (.958); 3 OF assists; Thomas has missed the last 3 plus weeks with broken ribs and is likely several weeks away from getting back into the lineup. With a .372 OBP and 8 steals in the seasons first 6 weeks, Thomas was doing exactly what you would want from a leadoff hitter.
Darin Ruf, 27, Phils 20th round pick in 2009; Hitting .265 with a HR and 2RBI in 34 AB’s with Lehigh Valley. Has played 5 games in the OF without an error and 1 assist; 3 games at 1B without an error; Not sure why he is here. He should be platooning in Philly with Brown.
Reading
Aaron Altherr, 23, Phils 9th round pick in 2009; .191/.235/.289 in 152 AB’s; 3HR 12 RBI; 3/4SB; 4%bb/21%k rates; .104 vs. LHP; .231 vs. RHP; .158 with RISP; .200 in May. 47 games in the OF with 6(4 with CW) assists; 4 errors (.972); Altherr is just 5-48 against left handed pitching, and is not hitting righties up to his capabilities as well.
Anthony Hewitt, 25, Phils 1st round pick in 2008; .140/.146/.180 in 100 AB’s; 1HR 8RBI; 2/4SB; .132 vs. LHP; .149 vs. RHP; .182 with RISP; .163/.176/.245 in May. 16 games in the OF with 3 errors (.880); 0 OF assists; Just abysmal all around.
Cameron Perkins, 23, Phils 6th round pick in 2012; .342/.408/.495 in 196 AB’s; 3HR 34RBI; 3 sb; 9%BB/14%k rates; .364 vs. LHP; .328 vs. RHP; .279 with RISP; .308/.395/.413 in May. 43 games in the OF without an error; 5 OF assists; So, Perkins hits for average, leads the system in RBI’s; hits equally well off righties and lefties, has an OBP over .400; walks alot, leads the team in OF assists, hasn’t committed an error, and doesn’t strike out much. Oh, and he doesn’t hit for “power”. I will take it every day of the week.
Everett Williams, 23, Acquired from Padres in 2014; Hitting .280 in 25 AB’s ; 0HR 5RBI; 7 games in the OF without an error; 3 OF assists; Too early to pass judgment other than he is being wisely started in front of Anthony Hewitt.
Zach Collier, 23, Phils 1st round pick in 2008; .204/.302/.274 in 113 AB’s; 0HR 3RBI; 3/8 SB; .179 vs. LHP; .216 vs. RHP; .087 with RISP; 10%bb/27%k rates; 33 games in the OF with 2 assists; 1 error (.983); Collier was brutal before being placed on the DL two weeks ago. Speed was supposed to be his forte but 38% success rate stealing bases; 3 RBI in 113 AB’s? Gotta think the end of the line may be approaching for both he and Hewitt.
Kelly Dugan, 23, Phils 2nd round pick in 2009; Hitting .275 in 40 AB’s; 1HR and 5RBI; 12 games in the OF without an assist; 1 error (.964);Disappointing season thus far for Dugan who has been on the DL with two different injuried for all but two and a half weeks.
Clearwater
Peter Lavin, 26, Phils 20th round pick in 2011; .290/.336/.444 in 207 AB’s; 6HR 18RBI; 5/10SB; 6%bb/17%k rates; .289 vs. LHP; .290 vs. RHP; .286 with RISP; .302/.345/.425 in May. 52 games in the OF with 14 assists; 3 errors (.951); Lavin has been extremely consistent and there is nothing more for him to do at this level and no reason for him to continue playing in Clearwater. There are not many 26 year old prospects and I am not saying Lavin fits into that mold, but with approaching 900 AB’s over three seasons in Clearwater, give the guy a break…promote him or release him…14 OF assists already, wow.
Brian Pointer, 22, Phils 28th round pick in 2010; .185/.269/.318 in 151 AB’s; 3HR 10RBI; 5/7SB; 10%bb/27%k rates; .222 vs. LHP; .170 vs. RHP; .083 with RISP; .188/.269/.319 in May. 39 games in the OF with 3 assists; 0 errors; Fits right into the very disappointing “toolsy” OF category that the Phils have so many of.
Brandon Short, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2014; Hitting .200 in 10 AB’s; 1 RBI; Was on the DL all year until just last week.
Herlis Rodriguez, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2010. Joined team over last weekend.
Lakewood
Dylan Cozens, 20, Phils 2nd round pick in 2012; .239/.282/.420 in 205 AB’s; 7HR 23 RBI; 8/9SB; .294 vs. LHP; .221 vs. RHP; .214 with RISP; 6%bb/26%k rates; Hit .241 in May. 47 games in the OF with 4 assists; 4 errors (.953); Cozens certainly shows flashes but he is an all or nothing kind of player right now and needs to work towards consistency.
Samuel Hiciano, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .278/.325/.472 in 180 AB’s; 6HR 22RBI; 3/7SB; 5%bb/23%k rates; .244 vs. LHP; .289 vs. RHP; .265 with RISP; Hit .295 in May. 33 games in the OF with 3 assists; 2 errors (.968); Hiciano has been one of the more consistent performers on the Lakewood roster and is certainly one whose stock is rising.
Carlos Tocci, 18, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .230/.278/.281 in 196 AB’s; 0HR 15RBI; 2/8SB; 4%bb/21%k rates; .360 vs. LHP; .185 vs. RHP; .233 with RISP; Hit .200 in May. 51 games in the OF with 4 assists; 2 errors (.985); Continued mediocrity. Very slight progress over 2013.
Jiandido Tromp, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .224/.264/.343 in 67 AB’s; 1HR 7RBI; 1 SB. 19 games in the OF without an assist; 0 errors; Not enough AB’s to pass judgement.
Larry Greene, Jr.21, Phils 1st round pick in 2011; .167/.237/.241 in 54 AB’s with 0HR 5RBI and 2SB; 13 games in the OF without an assist; 2 errors (.926); Placed on the DL 5 weeks ago with a significant wrist issue.

If Quinn’s K rate cuts down, does hit bat play in the OF? I know his fielding is a little questionable at short.
I really hope Sandberg emerges and Dugan gets back on track. This is one depressing position, even for the Phillies.
LikeLike
Yes, a decided lack of talent. With taking Gillies in Lee trade and all of the primo draft picks the Phillies have spent trying to get a CF and how well Crawford is doing at SS, you’d think the Phillies would just move Quinn to CF.

I agree with you atown…..Quinn should have been moved to CFawhile back, after Crawford’s explosive start in the GCL.
Why wait?

Hear, Hear! Quinn to CF…if he can hit, please.

Ben Revere has a job, doesn’t he?
Quinn’s hit tool is usually projected at 50 or 55, power at 35 or so. He’s put up solid BB% numbers. That equates to a .270/.340/.380 kind of slash line, plus the speed on the bases. OK, though not great, offense from your CF. If he can be a plus defender at SS/2B/CF, he becomes the a lot more value.

There’s not one ‘top’ prospect from LHV to Lakewood who plays the OF for the Phillies with any kind of real predigree. Maybe with the exception of Carlos Tocci because of his signing bonus and youth, but ultimately he has to develop a ‘hit tool’ at some point.
Perkins is coming back down to earth as his BABIP begins to average out, but even before that he still doesn’t look like anyone you’d be extremely excited about starting every day in a MLB OF.
Is there another organization in baseball with a weaker OF prospect group from AAA to A?

This is truly appalling and depressing. A nearly ready OF prospect would be a must-acquire in any major trade this team could make.

do you guys think tocci, biddle and ruf woudl get Stanton from the Marlins (no way would i ever give up crawford!)

You do realize, no, that there are quite a few adolescent posters on Phillies’ blogs who suggest transactions like this all the time?

What should be done: promote Ruf, Sudsdorf, and Henson as older prospects over the likes of Gwynn, Mayberry, and a utility IF spot. Then move Perkins and Williams to triple A. Then Lavin to AA. Perkins and Lavin deserve the promotion while the other 3 in AAA are likely better options than who is on the team. Ruf, Sudsdorf, and Henson wwon’t likely be stars or starters but could develop into key role players. While Perkins and Lavin still have upside and move closer to helping out.
Outfield in minors lacks a whole lot.

No prospects beside Crawford and Biddle. Why? For example, the Hunter Pence trade ends being Tommy Joseph for Jon Singleton, Domingo Santana, and Jarred Cosart. How is that going to work out?

For all of his faults, Gwynn is the only bench player on the Phillies that does not play the game like a complete dufus – he’s useful for what he does. Susdorf is not a major league player – he does nothing well enough to merit a spot on a big league roster. Henson is actually interesting – I’d rather have him on the bench than Hernandez, who just can’t hit enough right now.
By the way, I thought Ruf was sent down to play. Why the heck wasn’t he playing today? They should stop jerking this guy around – he’s one of the few bright spots on the bubble. Just get rid of Mayberry already – he’s not worth it.

I gave my take on Ruf yesterday and what he and his agents…The Wasserman Group and Arn Tellem…. should do
Enuf is enuf.

Mayberry is doing his job this year. Hitting lefties (which he’s done well over his career) and playing solid defense in a corner OF spot. If people want a platoon in LF, he should be the right-handed half, not Ruf. They should just let Ruf play the position he’s suited for- 1B.

Getting Joseph for Pence was alright, they weren’t going to do any better for him, and his injuries arent the Phillies fault. But it’s the first Pence trade that is going to go down as an all timer. Between that and the Lee trade, its a wonder this clown still has a job…and thats not even bringing up everything else.

And surrendering a first round pick for J. Papelbon – a pick he could have retained IF HE HAD WAITED ANOTHER WEEK. This, alone, was a fireable offense.

This is not the first time the Phillies have signed a reliever, before waiting to see if arb/QO as offered. It is a PR-friendly way of saving the cost of a 1st round bonus and shifting the $ to the MLB budget.

Allentown, you keep saying this but it makes no sense. The owners clearly regard the minor league and major league budgets as seperate, and the former is limited by their desire to conform to the commissioner’s efforts to keep spending on amature talent down. Classic cartel behavior,
You can argue that the smart organizations don’t support the cvommioner’s efforts, but there is simply no evidence at all that the organization is so stupid as to entirely forfiet a first round pick just because they don’t want to pay the massively below market costs of signing a first round pick. You’re assuming, without evidence, that the organization is … stupid doesn’t even begin to describe it, no sane person would really believe that the money needed to sign a first round pick would be better spent in the FA market. The prices paid in the baseball draft may be the biggest bargains in professional sports, and they are tranparently so, as shown whenever amatuer talent is available in the open market (e.g., Cuban players currently).
Now, it IS possible, even likely, that the FO does somewhat underestimate the massive disparity in the price of amatuer talent versus major league FA talent. That might partially explain why they choose to support the commissioner (though there are plenty of alternative explnations for that), and it might partially explain why they are overly sanguine about forfeiting picks to sign FAs.
But the Papelbon signing – and I am pretty sure that you are wrong, and that the Phillies have never before screwed up in the same way – has a couple of more likely explanations, neither of which is flattering to Amaro but neither of which assume nearly the level of irrationality on the organization’s part that is implicit in your argument. He may well he believed (incorrectly or not) that delaying the signing would allow another team to swoop in and sign him. He may also have been misinformed about the status of the then ongoing negotiations between the owners and players, and thus may not have realized that a short delay would save the pick.
Neither scenario is a defense of Amaro. It probably IS true that the organization undervalues draft picks. But at least those scenarios don’t assume a level of irrationality which is extraordinarily unlikely.

Disagree. The failure to delve deeply into Joseph’s past med history which would have revealed his concussion history cost Phils…just like Garcia a few seasons ago.

If both players continue performing at the same rate I think it won’t be long before Hewitt and Lavin swap roster spots. Hopefully Hewitt can regroup in Clearwater.
