Box Score Recap – 5/31/2014

Jesse Biddle returns from a bout with hail-head to pitch pretty well – 3R, 2ER, 5H, 2BB and 3K in 6.1IP. Kyle Simon didn’t do Biddle any favors, allowing both of his Biddle-inherited runners to score. Miguel Nunez made a triumphant return to starting after a couple weeks in XST and the CLR bullpen – he went six scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just three hits and one walk. Roman Quinn with a hit in that game. He’s still yet to draw a walk in nine games.

Willians Astudillo kept his hitting streak alive at 15, going 2-4 for Lakewood, while Dylan Cozens received a pretty terrible 20th birthday present. It came in a large hat box and it shines like Skinny Elvis’ most famous suit. I think Fat Elvis’ karate jumpsuit is probably more famous than the one from the postage stamp. so I figured I’d point out which iteration of Elvis I was talking about. And for all the young folks out there, Elvis was a rock n roll singer. People used to make music with like their mouths and instruments and stuff instead of computers. Wild, I know.

And DSL started today, with Edwin Rodriguez the most interesting guy to watch, IMO. He’s 16 for a couple more days, and received $100k to sign – Ben Badler from BA reported at the time that he was a “corner outfielder with a nice swing, a good approach, gap-to-gap pop and below-average speed”. The DH was Luis Beaufond, who’s listed as a catcher and will play the year as a 17-year old, so it’s worth watching him as well, I’d say. The more interesting names that were on the roster just a few day ago have been removed, and are likely headed to the Gulf Coast League roster when they kick off a few days after the draft concludes.

  1. I’m not too worried about Quinn. He’s walked at better than a 9 percent rate during his first two seasons — I expect he’ll normalize to a similar level as the season progresses. Let’s not forget he’s two serious injuries and nearly a full calendar year removed from playing regular baseball.

    1. but i feel like we are right back to where we were before his achillies injury…his bat isn’t playing. We all focused so much on his fielding issues (and he probably did as well) that he stopped growing with bat. Lots of time for this to turn around but its feeling like groundhog day with him.

      1. He has had 36 PAs this season. A couple more games, and you will be able to make a complete career evaluation of Roman Quinn.

        1. I’m not worried about Quinn, but he has no business being at Clearwater. It is a real disservice to his development to have him playing there. The guy is coming of two injuries, which caused him to miss close to a season and beyond that had only half a season at Lakewood and did not do well in that half season, either offensively or defensively. I don’t downgrade him much for the Lakewood stats, he is still learning both a new position and switch hitting, but there is no way he should be in high-A ball. The issue is not that 36 AB can be used to make a career evaluation of Quinn, but that they are just further confirmation of last season’s results saying that Quinn is not a guy who is ready for Clearwater.

  2. Knapp and Quinn were both hit by pitches- are they trying to get re-injured? On a serious note, I am cautiously optimistic for the draft- the Phillies have a top 10 pick for the first time since 2001 and they are coming off of a pretty good draft last year.

  3. Wow…sems lately many good LA -DR hitters Phillies sign seem to be at 40/45 speed ratings …..Grullon, Encarnacion, Franco and now Edwin Rodriguez…..plenty of corner position guys or catchers..

  4. Jim Salisbury has a piece this morning suggesting Marti Wolever is on the hot seat and the Phillies are adjusting their draft philosophy away from high-risk high-reward picks.

I hate to be pessimistic, but it seems like all the stars are aligning for a panic pick–seems like everyone involved in the decision has incentive to prioritize someone who can contribute to this mediocre roster in the short term.

    1. Bu the the philosophy has changed according to Wolever…..perhaps a lot less ‘athletic toolsey guys’ drafting early on in the draft and maybe a concentration on players who have a high hit ability,… who more then likely probably cannot run like the wind or throw balls threw barn doors.

  5. Judging by that article it would definately appear they are leaning the college route. Although, if Kolek or Gordon gets to them they’d be crazy to pass on them.

  6. I didn’t take that comment to mean they were focusing on college guys, I took it to mean they were going to focus on guys that had more now tools like hitting ability and less lottery picks like Hewitt that were nothing but projection.

  7. Today, the Pirates made a move that I wish the Phils could make. They traded a pretty good reliever to the Marlins for a competitive-balance draft pick (No. 39 overall).

    1. I was just looking at the guy they traded. He gets a lot of groundballs but averages about 5.5 K/9 and 4 BB/9. Career 5.01 FIP.

I would be pretty happy if the Phils could have pulled something like that off.
