Around the System–Relief Pitchers

Lehigh Valley

Phillippe Aumont, 25, Acquired from Seattle in 2010; 14 games; 0-1 with a 5.60ERA; 17.2IP 15H 19BB 18K; 0.76GO/AO; .246 opp. avg; 1.92WHIP; 9.7BB/9.2K per nine; .200 vs. LHH; .278 vs. RHH; .400 with RISP.  Ten walks per nine innings and getting lit up with RISP.  Not much more to say.

Justin DeFratus, 26, Phils 11th round pick in 2007; 14 games, 0-0 with a 4.20ERA; 3 saves; 15IP 17H 3BB 12K; 1.64 GO/AO; .309 opp. avg; 1.33WHIP; 1.8BB/7.2K per nine; .348 vs. LHH, .281 vs. RHH, .316 with RISP.  DeFratus is still trying to figure it out.  He has been extremely hittable this year and far less overpowering than in years past.

Kenny Giles, 23;Phils 7th round pick in 2011;  18 games between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 2-0 with a 1.29ERA; 8 saves; 21IP 11H 10BB 31K; 0.71GO/AO; .155 opp. avg; 1.00WHIP; 4.3BB/13.3K per nine;  These are simply overwhelmingly good stats.  The only brief moment of pause is a slightly elevated walk rate, but Giles has been dominant.

Jeremy Horst, 28, Acquired from Cinncinati in 2011; 15 games; 1-1 with a 3.31ERA; 16.1IP 13H 11BB 17K; 0.58GO/AO; .220 opp. avg; 1.47WHIP; 6.1BB/9.4K per nine; .148 vs. LHH; .281 vs. RHH; .190 with RISP.  If you take away the control issues, you have a real nice effort by Horst.  Unfortunately, at the major league level you have to be able to throw strikes and Horst hasn’t done that consistently or he would be back in the Phils ‘pen.

Cesar Jiminez, 29, Re-signed as a free agent in 2014; 16 games; 2-1 with a 1.88ERA; 2 saves; 24IP 14H 5BB 20K; 0.76 GO/AO; .169 opp. avg; 0.79 WHIP; 1.9BB/7.5K per nine; .222 vs. LHH; .143 vs. RHH; .188 with RISP; In May: 1-0 with a 0.00ERA and 2 saves in 11.2 innings.  I really dont see why Jiminez cant help the Phillies with their bullpen woes.  He has been outstanding all year for Lehigh Valley and last year in significant major league action held major league hitters to a .226 average.

Ethan Martin, 24, Acquired from Dodgers in 2012; 7 games between Clearwater and Lehigh Valley; 0-0 with a 1.08ERA; 8.1IP 7H 5BB 7K; 1.83 GO/AO; .226 opp. avg. Has pitched well in limited action after missing a month injured.

Seth Rosin, 25, Reacquired in 2014 after being returned in the Rule 5 draft; 12 games; 1-3 with a 8.16ERA; 2 saves; 14.1IP 18H 7BB 15K; 2hr allowed; 0.35 GO/AO; .310 opp. avg; 1.74WHIP; 4.4BB/9.4K per 9; .292 vs. LHH; .324 vs. RHH, .250 with RISP.  It has been very, very ugly for Rosin this year.

Kyle Simon, 23, Acquired from Baltimore in 2012; 14 games between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 0-3 with a 6.98ERA; 19.1IP 22H 9BB 11K; 2HR allowed; 2.36 GO/AO; .278 opp. avg; 1.60 WHIP; 4.2BB/5.1K per 9; Solid for Reading but absolutely abysmal in Lehigh Valley. For the ‘Pigs, SImon is 0-2 with a 9.00ERA and a .315 opp. avg in 9 games.

BJ Rosenberg, 28, Phils 13th round pick in 2008; Rosenberg pitched poorly for the Phils, was sent down to Lehigh Valley after was struck with a line drive in the head in just his 2nd game for the ‘Pigs.  Rosenberg has now missed three plus weeks with a concussion.

Reading

Tyler Knigge, 25, Phils 12th round pick in 2010; 14 games, 1-0 with a 2.57ERA; 3 saves, 28IP 21H 9BB 14K; 0HR allowed; 1.33 GO/AO; .216 opp. avg; 1.07WHIP; 2.9BB/4.5K per 9; .237 vs. LHH, .203 vs. RHH, .182 with RISP; Knigge started slow but has really been coming on and hasn’t given up an ER in May (15IP). The opposition is hitting just .180 against him in May.

Colton Murray, 24, Phils 13th round pick in 2011;  15 games between Clearwater and Reading; 2-2 with a 1.57 ERA; 2 saves; 22IP 18H 11BB 22K; 0HR allowed; 0.55 GO/AO; .217 opp. avg; 1.32 WHIP; 4.5BB/9K per 9; It took Murray parts of three seasons to move past Clearwater, but he has now done so and is pitching very well this year.

Hector Neris, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 16 games between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 2-0 with a 2.49ERA; 1 save; 25.1IP 21H 12BB 18K; 3HR allowed; 0.80 GO/AO; .233 opp. avg; 1.30WHIP; 4.3BB/6.4K per nine.  Neris has pitched effectively at both AA and AAA this year and has been used in a variety of roles from long man to set up.

Ryan O’Sullivan, 23, Acquired from the Giants in 2012; 14 games; 2-2 with a 4.03ERA; 22.1IP 28H 5BB 21K; 3HR allowed; 1.61 GO/AO; .298 opp. avg; 1.47WHIP; 2.0BB/8.5K per 9; .280 vs. LHH; .304 vs. RHH; .269 with RISP; 1-0 with an 0.77 ERA in May. O’Sullivan started slow and has gotten much better over the last three weeks.

Nefi Ogando, 24, Acquired from Boston in 2013; 16 games, 2-0 with a 4.05ERA; 4 saves; 20IP 17H 5BB 20K; 2.33 GO/AO; .227 opp avg; 1.10WHIP; 2.3BB/9K per 9; .200 vs. LHH, .236 vs. RHH, .292 with RISP. Another Reading pitcher who started slowly and has come around as of late.  Ogando has very good stuff and consistently throws 94-96.  All that for the price of John MacDonald.

Austin Wright, 24, Phils 8th round pick in 2011; 14 games; 2-0 with a 4.43ERA; 22.1IP 19H 20BB 18K; 1HR allowed; 0.53GO/AO; .224 opp. avg; 1.75WHIP; 8.1BB/7.3K per 9; .208 vs. LHH, .230 vs. RHH, .184 with RISP.  Another example of how walks kill you.  Wright’s line looks good until you consider he is walking almost a batter an inning which has cost Reading plenty of runs this year.

Clearwater

Dan Child, 21, Phils 18th round pick in 2013; 8 games, 0-0 with a 4.09ERA; 1 save; 11IP 16H 8BB 5K; 3.00 GO/AO; .372 opp. avg; 2.18WHIP.  Child has been extremely unimpressive and missed 2 weeks on the DL.

Jordan Guth, 23, Phils 9th round pick in 2012 draft; 12 games; 0-1 with a 1.40ERA; 2 saves; 19.1IP 18H 8BB 10K; 0HR allowed; 1.00 GO/AO; .237 opp. avg; 1.34 WHIP; 3.7BB/4.7K per 9; .208 vs. LHH; ..250 vs RHH; .261 with RISP.  Guth has been one of the few bright spots on the CLearwater roster, yet he has been far from overpowering in the back end of the bullpen.  He has shown effectiveness through knowing how to pitch.

Lino Martinez, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2009; 12 games, 0-2 with a 4.24ERA; 23.1IP 17H 19BB 21K; 0.56 GO/AO; .215 opp. avg; 1.54WHIP; 7.3BB/8.1K per nine; .276 vs. LHH; .180 vs. RHH; .143 with RISP.  ANother pitcher with a huge walk rate.  The numbers jump out at you across the board as someone who could achieve a good deal of success if he learns control.

Ramon Oviedo, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 4 games, 0-0 with a 0.00ERA in 5.2innings of work.   Joined Clearwater about two weeks ago.  So far, so good.

Lee Ridenhour, 24, Phils 16th round pick in 2013; 12 games, 1-3 with a 6.88ERA; 1 save; 17IP 22H 4BB 8K; 1.44 GO/AO; .310 opp. avg; 1.52WHIP; 2.1BB/4.2K per 9; .267 vs. LHH, .341 vs. RHH, .441 with RISP.  Ridenhour has struggled all year, especially with RISP.

Kevin Walter,22, Phils 20th round pick in 2010; 11 games, 0-2 with a 5.75ERA; 20.1IP 18H 15BB 8K; 0.70 GO/AO; .240 opp. avg; 1.62WHIP; 6.6BB/3.5K per 9; .290 vs. LHH, .205 vs. RHH, .292 with RISP.  Walking twice as many as you are striking out is quite simply a recipe for disaster.

Luis Paulino, Signed as a free agent in 2009,8 games (3 starts) between Clearwater and Reading; 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA; 31.1IP 23H 15BB 21K, 2HR allowed; 0.66 GO/AO; .200 opp. avg; 1.21 WHIP; 4.3BB/6.0K per 9; Paulino has been fairly effective.  When he has run into trouble, it has generally come as a result of walks.

Lakewood

Tyler Buckley, 23, Phils 27th round pick in 2013; 8 games, 0-1 with a 5.91ERA; 10.2IP 14H 7BB 8K; 1.09 GO/AO; .311 opp. avg; 1.97WHIP; 5.9BB/6.8K per 9; Limited work thus far for Buckley who has struggled with his control and command.

Jesen Therrien, 21, Phils 17th round pick in 2011; 9 games, 0-0 with a 7.71ERA; 14IP 18H 7BB 10K; 2HR allowed; 1.00 GO/AO; .295 opp avg; 1.79 WHIP; 4.5BB/6.4K per 9. Therrien has been less than impressive.

Cody Forsythe, 23, Phils 25th round pick in 2013; 14 games, 2-0 with a 2.25ERA; 6 saves; 16IP 13H 3BB 14K; 0HR allowed; 1.00 GO/AO; .206 opp. avg; 1.00WHIP; 1.7BB/7.9K per 9; .238 vs. LHH, .190 vs. RHH, .250 with RISP; Forsythe has pitched very well as he should as a 23 year old in this league.  I would expect a call to CLearwater within the next month.

Delvi Francisco, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 5 games, 1-0 with a 0.93ERA; 9.2IP 8H 1BB 11K; 1.86 GO/AO; .205 opp avg; After missing the seasons first month, Francisco has been excellent.

Ulisses Joaquin, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 14 games, 0-1 with a 7.54ERA; 1 save; 22.2IP 25H 11BB 22K; 3 HR allowed; 1.53 GO/AO; .266 opp avg; 1.59WHIP; 4.4BB/8.7K per 9; .195 vs. LHH, .321 vs. RHH, .343 with RISP; Joaquin has shown flashes but has generally struggled.

Julio Reyes, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 10 games (2 starts); 0-2 with a 4.44ERA; 24.1IP 19H 7BB 22K; 1HR allowed; 0.93 GO/AO; .204 opp avg; 1.07WHIP; 2.6BB/8.1K per nine; .233 vs. LHH , .180 vs. RHH, .204 with RISP.  Reyes’s ERA is deceiving as he has pitched very well and has an inflated ERA.  He was recently moved into the rotation and threw five shutout innings in his first outing.

Yacksel Rios, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 13 games, 0-0 with a 4.09ERA; 22IP 24H 8BB 15K; 1 HR allowed; 1.45WHIP; 3.3BB/6.1K per nine; 1.22 GO/AO; .267 opp. avg; Rios has been more productive than most in the Lakewood ‘pen.

  1. Who’s scouting pitchers for the Phillies? Ugh!!!!!! I know there are a lot of injuries which make this look a bit worse than it is, but it’s not good and the lack of depth runs up and down the entire system. There are one or two starters and some relief depth at the upper levels (although fewer relievers than I thought there would be). Aside from that it’s like looking at the system in 1995. Yuck!

  2. ‘Delvi Francisco, ………… After missing the seasons first month, Francisco has been excellent.’ —Great….you must have jinxed him…he walked the first four batters he faced last night in the ninth inning …blown save.

  3. Giles’ overall numbers are a little misleading because he hasn’t been so good in limited innings in AAA. He had a crazy 0.47 FIP in Reading, but has just a 4.47 FIP in Lehigh so far. Hopefully just a hiccup.

  4. how many guys here can you say “great stuff but no control” Its beyond insane how the Phillies can’t develop any of these guys into bullpen studs. They certainly have the stuff to be good.

I’d love to see Jiminez back in the majors. Luis Garcia may deserve note, even if he is up now…that guy is so weird, consistantly dominant in the minors but throws BP at the ML level.

I kind of like this Colton Murray kid

    1. Exactly. Out of this group there should be more than just Diekman and Bastardo as serviceable relievers. I’m pretty sure Giles will break that trend, but it’s still disappointing on the whole.

      1. Some of it is luck with Horst and Martin going down with injuries when it appeared they were becoming decent BP arms.

I don’t understand Rosenberg and DeFratus who both just seem to be afraid to trust their “stuff” when they get to the big leagues. I guess some of that can be attributed to coaching but I usually put the emphasis on the player who either has the confidence or they don’t.

Aumont just seems to be a very big guy who cannot repeat his delivery. I’m guessing they’ve been trying to simplify his approach to make it more consistent but he needs to be open to making the change.

As for the rest, if you’re a reliever in A-ball, I just don’t think that you are much of a prospect. The best arms are generally logging innings in the lower minors and don’t get moved to the pen until later.

  5. The pitching quality and depth is as bad as its ever been in this organization. You wonder if this upcoming draft will focus on the best players available or the best pitchers available. Any way you look at it the Phillies system has a lot of holes. Just seems that the pitching hole is worst.
