Hot or Not

A look at the time period covering games played May 8-14…Random thoughts…In a year where he is repeating a level, Carlos Tocci‘s numbers are quickly becoming problematic….JP Crawford continuing to do what he does…I am about to begin my now yearly crusade of promoting giving Cesar Jiminez a shot in the Phils ‘pen…About as poor a line as you can get from Severino Gonzalez this week…Kenny Giles stays on the hot list, even during a week where he transitions to AAA…Two names I expected alot more from are Kyle SImon and Seth Rosin….After a slow start, STeve Susdorf showing again that he can flat out hit.  Unfortunately, no power and little speed.

  1. Terrible week for Tocci, but let’s give it an entire season. He’s shown flashes. And again–not to sound like a broken record here–he’s nearly a year younger than Crawford. He should still be in high school. It seems like we’ve been saying this forever because he was signed when he was the equivalent of a freshman in high school or something like that.

Let’s give it a full season and see how the number look then before we declare them to be problematic. And keep in mind, he could repeat Lakewood yet again next year and still be age appropriate.

    1. I have wondered and speculated what his numbers would be if he was in an American HS now, and hitting against HS pitchers.

    2. Tocci was born August 23, 1995, so assuming a September cutoff for entering school he would have graduated in 2013 (when he was 17). Then he would have played in rookie ball last Summer, and might be in Lakewood this year (or in XST).

Of course, he would have been one of the youngest in his draft class, and just a few weeks younger than people in the 2014 draft class, so your point is still valid.

      1. By way of comparison, Crawford was born in January 1995, so Tocci is 7 months younger than Crawford.

        1. Right, and he by all accounts already plays very good defense and has good instincts for the game. I think I said this during the Top 30, but Tocci is just one of those guys where we’re going to have to be patient and wait and see. So much depends on his physical development–it’s not like he’s a 17-year-old man child and the question is whether he’ll develop baseball skills. It’s the opposite.

          1. Tocci is a little older then 17 now, turns 19 in three months, still young for low-A..

          2. The defense plus the fact that he makes fairly consistent contact against full-season pitchers remain good signs. Even if he stays rail thin and develops only a modest amount of power, a defensive CF who can collect knocks here and there can be a major league regular. (Hello, Doug Glanville)

  2. something just seems weird when I read about hot starting pitchers considering Im not sure anyone of them will amount to much more than a long man or AAAA type

  3. When I think about how almost all the best performers on this team are around 35 or older, I realize that this team is so very close to bottoming out, as in becoming one of the two or three worst teams in baseball. So I say, yet again, thank you Mr. Amaro for f**king up my baseball team.

  4. Gillies on the hot list? Maybe we’ll start to see the guy the Phillies wanted but his lefty/righty splits are troublesome. He’s hitting .063 (1 for 16) with 8 Ks in 16 ABs against lefties and .292 against righties. Still.. let’s hope that he’s trending upward. I still think that Gilles and Collier could be dropped from the 40 man roster anytime.
