3 Phillies on John Sickels Top 150 Prospects

After delays due to a concussion (they really aren’t a joke), John Sickels has released his list of the Top 150 prospects in baseball.  Sickels ranks Maikel Franco #35 (B+), J.P. Crawford #60 (B+), and Jesse Biddle #78 (B+).  You can read Sickels’ entire list here http://www.minorleagueball.com/2014/5/1/5640414/top-150-prospects-for-2014-baseball-john-sickels.

  1. Has anyone read anything or does anyone have any thoughts on how Crawford’s ceiling compares to some of the other major SS prospects that are closer to the majors – Baez, Russell, Lindor, Bogaerts, Correa? I have the impression that Crawford may not have the middle-of-the-order type bat ceiling as some of these other guys, but I have not seen a direct comparison with Crawford included.

    1. Focusing just on A Bogaerts comp –

The cautions first: even if he develops some pop (which he might), Crawford is unlikely to equal Bogaerts in that regard (at least in terms of ceilings). And at Crawford’s age (a few months older) Bogaerts was starring in A+ and AA.

On the other hand, Crawford is faster, probably has a higher defensive ceiling, and has better BB and K data. So there’s that.

  2. With all of the criticism that Amaro takes for his decisions, maybe he should get a little praise for his pick of Crawford. You see the names of the players he is ranked ahead of on this list? Including numerous top 10 picks from this past draft.

    1. I really doubt RAJ is responsible for whom we draft. He sets the budgets for the draft and international spending. That’s about it. Saying he should be praised for the pick of Crawford is like saying he should be praised when Sandberg brings in just the right relief pitcher at just the right moment — not his job, beyond hiring Sandberg and Wolever. If RAJ is deciding whom our first round draft pick is, then we are really in trouble.

  3. Is there really a guy named Roughned Odor? I wonder if he has a sister named Smellie?
