Harold Martinez swung the bat well making good contact on a couple of occasions and collected the team’s only real hit last night, a double to the right-center field gap. Jordan Guth threw 7 pitches to record the final 2 outs in relief.
That’s it for Threshers’ highlights against Dunedin. The big story would be the pitching of Matt Boyd.
He was the Blue Jays 6th round pick in the 2013 draft out of Oregon State. The lefty pitched 8 shutout innings allowing only two hits, the other hit was a bunt single by Brian Pointer. He needed only 89 pitches to complete 8 innings and struck out 12 Threshers. He lowered his ERA to 0.29 while recording his 4th win in 5 starts. There were double the normal number of scouts in attendance last night, probably to see this kid.
Threshers’ pitchers needed over 150 pitches and walked 9 while striking out 6. Brody Colvin made his first start of the year and gave up two runs. One of those was tainted when Malquin Canelo was unable to turn an inning ending double play in the first inning. Colvin had only made 3 short appearances while in Reading and was lifted after 52 pitches.
Luis Paulino came on and looked good for 3 innings. However he was replaced with one out in the 7th after giving up a walk and a single. His line was 3 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strike outs. The one run he was charged came on back to back walks by Luis Martinez after he entered the game. Martinez pitched a strong 8th before imploding in the 9th. He was replaced with one out and a run in after a hit batsman, walk, double steal, wild pitch, walk.
Threshers’ batters never seemed to figure out Boyd. As I mentioned above, only Harold Martinez seemed to get solid contact.
Maybe we chose the wrong OSU lefty with our #5 pick last year? Wetzler is doing very well at Oregon St this year. I just wish he was at Lakewood or Clearwater right now.
