Box Score Recap – 6/24/2013

Ethan Martin with another in a series of lines that look better if you skip the part we all know is the problem for Ethan Martin. 5BB and just 58% strikes, but he allowed just 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 8 in 6 innings. Be careful around Maikel Franco. He’s scalding hot. Like pre-lawsuit McDonald’s coffee hot. Andrew Pullin with his first HR of the year for Williamsport.

Larry Greene doubled and scored in the ninth to retake the lead after Delvi Francisco couldn’t hold it in the bottom of the eighth. Roman Quinn left that contest after the top of the first. He was hit by a pitch, stayed in the game to steal a base and score, and was then pulled – no details yet on any injury that may have occurred.

General Discussion – Week of 6-24-2013 – “Doesn’t it mean ‘Saint Diego’?” Edition

Late night Phillies this week. When will the West Coast realize East Coast people like stuff to happen earlier? Never, I fear.

Box Score Recap – 6/23/2013

Maikel Franco with 4 hits, just a double short of the cycle. Guy’s mashing so far in AA, with an OPS of 1.441 in four games. Zach Green is also raking so far – OPSing 1.209, though with 11 Ks in 31 PAs, with the usual late June SSSSS (Short Season Small Sample Size) caveat.

2012 High School draftee Drew Anderson with six hitless innings for Williamsport. 2013 pick Lee Ridenhour did his part with two more hitless innings, before fellow 2013 pick Rob Marcello gave up the first hit, a solo homerun, with 2 outs in the ninth.

Around the System–Relief Pitchers

A second look at relief pitchers throughout the organization. Once depth filled, there is now reason for legitimate concern at the upper levels of the organization.  Williamsport and GCL are not included but will be on the next trip around.

Lehigh Valley

Phillipe Aumont, 24, Acquired from Seattle in 2009; 10 games, 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA and 2 saves; 9.1IP 9H 14BB 13K; 1.14 GO/AO; .250 opp. avg. .375 vs. LH, .150 vs. RH. Until Aumont is able gain an idea about where the ball is going, this is where he will stay.  Last couple of outings have been a bit better, but has walked 14 in nine innings since being sent down.

Justin Friend, 27, Selected in the 2010 Minor League Rule 5 draft; 25 games between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 4-2 with a 4.97 ERA; 38IP 36H 27BB 30K; 2.33 GO/AO; .250 opp. avg., 6.4BB/7.1K per nine; 1.66 WHIP;  .298 vs. LH, .182 vs. RH, .246 with RISP; 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA over his last 10 games. Friend has been very effective as of late but the walks have really inhibited his success this year.  Continue reading Around the System–Relief Pitchers

Box Score Recap – 6/21/2013 and 6/22/2013

Maikel Franco with his first AA homerun. Jim Murphy and Tyson Gillies also went deep for Reading, while they got another fine performance from David Buchanan – 6IP, 3R (2 earned) on 5H, 1BB and 7Ks. That’s two good starts in a row. 2-5 with a double, an RBI and 2 runs scored for Larry Greene. 3 hits for Cesar Hernandez, and he stole #21, and he’s only been caught 5 times. Over 80% there, adding to his nearly .800 OPS at AAA. If he doesn’t graduate, he may push for a spot in my top 10 this off-season.

No GCL game today due to rain. Kind of a disappointment, though the roster is finally up here. No Jose Pujols. Curious. I’ll be out of pocket tomorrow and most of the day Sunday, so I’ve posted the link below to get those boxes when they come out.

Box Score Recap – 6/20/2013

Maikel Franco with a couple singles in four trips to the plate in his debut, and apparently he made a fine play on the move on his first chance in the field. I would make a joke about how he showed up Chase Utley, but I’m not crossing that guy in print. He’ll have a long life to payback his enemies, large and small, and I’ve no doubt he’ll find and destroy every single man who dared to write or speak ill of him, even in jest. Not because he’s vengeful, or filled with malice, but just because he’s such a hard worker, and he’s going to have very little to do with his time.

Hot or Not

A look back at the week of June 13-19.  A few quick hitters…its very hard to think that Larry Greene will turn it around. Between the brutal numbers and showing up out of shape to Spring Training, I have about written him off…Zambrano should go up. Not sure if immediately in the rotation but he has to be able to help in some way…The enigma that is Brody Colvin continues to cause me to scratch my head…Am I wrong to be very excited about Severino Gonzalez?Mike Nesseth is a name to watch…he knows how to pitch.

Hot Hitters, Min 12 AB’s: Willie Carmona (.667, HR 5RBI); Chris Serritella (.462); Carlos Tocci (.417); Josh Fields (.400, 4RBI); Jim Murphy (.381, 2HR 7RBI); Edgar Duran (.368); Tyler Henson (.357, 3SB); Zach Green (.357); Gustavo Martinez (.357); Mitch Walding (.333, 5R 1HR 3RBI); Honorable Mention: Overbeck Continue reading Hot or Not

Phillies Promote Maikel Franco to Reading

News just breaking that the Phillies are moving Franco up to AA.  It has been a real breakout year for Franco with him showing more opposite field approach without sacrificing any of his game.  His strikeout rate has dropped and there have been more positive opinions on his defense.  There wasn’t a 3B to block him in AA so it is an easy decision.

This may be the first of many promotions or a single promotion, we will see over the coming days.
