Larry Greene’s on a 7-game hitting streak right now, with only 4ks in those 7 games. He’s OPSing .904 in his last ten games, and .717 in June. Greene shoots, you might say.

Congrats to Johnathon Knight, I know his Mom I believe frequents here from time to time so always worthy of a shoutout.
Decent start by Musser, him and Walter both got decent bonuses but haven’t done the greatest. I believe Walter has been hurt for the duration of his tenure and Musser has been in and out of action. Still hoping one can start moving up a bit.
Maikel Franco is kind of good I think. Anthony Hewitt is teasing again.
Without Williamsport though, its hard to look at some of these boxscores for something exciting. Thankfully there’s Franco.

I agree it is hard to rate GM’s like Cashman. The money they get to spend means they can make a lot more mistakes than other GM’s without that kind of money.
It is one of the reasons I think RAJ is hard to evaluate at well. He gets to spend Top 5 money on MLB salary…but is he a Top 5 GM? That is a question that would trigger much debate.

“Is RAJ a Top 5 GM” shouldn’t trigger any debate at all- debates need two sides, and Amaro gets less performance for more payroll than almost anybody else.

Well, I certainly don’t think his is Top 5. I think he is average. His best moves have come with him writing the biggest checks…checks that very few teams in baseball could even afford.

That’s ridiculous. You can’t compare a situation in which the Phils were buyers to one in which they could be sellers. Why would RAJ be so desperate to trade Ruiz, Young and Utley that they would take on salary for a bag of balls? Utley and Ruiz in particular are candidates for qualifying offers and potential comp picks, so there’s no way that would happen.
Honestly roccom, your Chicken Little thing is getting old.

They should be able to do close that well, I’d guess. Young plays a fair third base, (not winning any awards or anything, but he’s not a complete disaster, and the arm is strong and seems to be pretty accurate), where Thome was a DH only. Young’s D probably balances out a good deal versus how much of an impact bat the Os were expecting in Thome.

I think the next 60 days are going to be very interesting. It is possible we will see the Phillies throw in far more money in trades to try and get back top prospects to re-stock the farm system than they would have spent between 2006 and 2011 combined just drafting overslot HS kids and paying them like other top market teams did.
Nick Castellanos is just one example. He could have been bought for $3.45M in 2010 draft, but the Phillies passed on him because his asking price was “too expensive” and he wasn’t going to sign for slot. Now there are rumors suggesting the Phillies trade Paps AND throw in $10M to $15M to the Tigers for Castellanos (and maybe something else).
I am all for the Paps for Castellanos trade…this system does need more top prospects…but I would see it as at least partial confirmation of a massive error in strategy by the Phillies FO in the way they approached the draft over the last decade pre-2012.

This again?
1. 30 other teams passed on Castellanos, (some multiple times) before he was drafted #44, by the Tigers.
2. If they would have taken Castellanos they wouldn’t have Jesse Biddle now.
3. Hindsight is great, when you can choose to remember that you would’ve preferred Castellanos to Biddle, but forget the other overslot guys everybody wanted, that Biddle is now better than (Renaudo and Allie).

Castellanos was the guy I wanted in 2010. But I agree Biddle has been a fine pick in his own right. Although I have to say, it is common knowledge Castellanos was passed over due to his bonus demands. But your logic is flawed at several levels. This is not meant to sound rude, but I have heard your response before and it is a lazy one thrown out there by staunch defenders of the Giles / Montgomery approach (why some fans feel the need to defend their approach I will never understand).
Teams may have passed on Castellanos, but they STILL took high bonus overslot prospects, they just didn’t want to take one of the most expensive ones (which Castellanos was). For example Boston passed on Castellanos and took Garin Cecchini in Round 4 for $1.3M. We took Bryan Morgado. And do you really not see the flaw in your logic when you lump the Phillies in with small market, low budget teams who passed over prospects like Castellanos? The small market teams aren’t the Phillies competition for a WS. Teams like Boston, Detroit, Texas, New York are. My criticism is not from inside a bubble. It is based on comparing what the other big market teams did to what the Phillies did. It is called benchmarking.
But Castellanos is just one example. There are many others. If you don’t know that by now, you either haven’t been paying attention (to the math) or you don’t care. Either way, it is what it is. Over the years here some have chosen to congratulate the Phillies for doing the bare minimum of what should be expected of them, some of us wanted them to do more. Especially since the teams that are the Phillies real competition for a WS ring routinely did / do more to acquire amateur talent.

You can argue this point as much as you like. It is obviously very important to you, based on the content of 99% of your posts.
But please find a better example than this tired Castellanos, 2010 draft, point. It doesn’t illustrate the point, because the Phillies strategy worked, in that case.
They are no worse off with Biddle, for 1 million, than with Castellanos for 3.5 million. And they are much better off with Biddle for 1 million, than Renaudo for 3 million.

Whether it is a true arm bar swing or not it is undeniable that he has a lot of “wind-up” in his swing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGHTQXWDEdM Right now he can make up for it with his incredible bat speed. I’d like to see it cleaned up a bit, but it is difficult/dangerous to mess with what is working. If he hasn’t changed it as he ages I could see this being a problem as he loses bat speed.
LikeLike
Agreed completely. He can’t have that many moving parts in his swing moving forward. Rocks back while bringing his hands up and back, transfers his weight incredibly, and generates a ton of bat speed. If he can just steady his hands during the load, I think his bat speed will play up and he’ll be able to maximize on his already solid pitch recognition. I also think working with some more major league veterans will help him acquire better eating/workout habits. All minor, very correctable, issues which is why I think the excitement is warranted but with caution.

i don’t think the load is going to be an issue because it looks like he is finished it before the pitcher releases the ball, thus getting to the launch position in enough time. Think the whole Jimmy getting his front foot down in time. I have only watched the one video of his swing and something is a bit off with his left arm but he clears his hips so well and keep his hands inside the ball that it works.

I attended the Reading Double header last night, it was not pretty. Watching Hewitt very much gave me the impression that his defense (while committing less errors!) is still brutal as he took some serious bad routes, one of which turned into a double. Managed to talk to Gillies before the game, he says that he’s getting comfortable and confident with the new swing. He put up an O-for, but he was putting good wood on the pitches overall. I’m almost tempted towards optimism for his future. Of course, let’s get to the Franco notes:
1.) One of his errors was a Michael Young special (attempted to ole a bounce, missed). The other two were rushed throws when he should’ve held it and not try and make a spectacular play. Overall his lateral range didn’t look bad at all as he picked a few balls up from under the shortstop and got the runner, so I’m willing to concede that this was a blip. I would also note that Murphy does not look like a good receiver at 1B, so that may also have an effect.
2.) He was being pounded inside all night and responded very well, hitting a big boy home run to right center with good contact otherwise. In the 2nd game he fought off a pitch that nearly drilled him to drop it into Center for a hit and shot a single straight through the box in the first inning. Overall he didn’t disappoint.

Nice write-up, good to see opposite field HR power… pretty sure we were talking about that point with regards to if Franco profiles as a 60, 65 or 70 on the power scale. One of the big measurables is opposite field power. Very interesting indeed.
As a side note, baseball prospectus has Franco ranked 42 (ahead of Biddle who was un-ranked in the top 50) nationally. Not too shabby and I suspect he’s going to be our consensus best prospect. By seasons end he could find himself in the top 30 if he continues to impress.

Question for everyone… We talk about how being “chubby” is bad for a ball player (eg Larry Greene Jr. and to a lessor extent even Maikel Franco) We say just because a ball player doesn’t look athletic, he’s bound to disappoint. I was reading an article (can’t remember where, but it was a reputable source) where they claimed Franco had no more “projection” left on his body at the age of 20. And I sort of thought that silly off hand…
Take a look at the following players:
Hack Wilson – had a season with Fifty-six home runs, 191 runs batted in, a .356 batting average, and a 1.177 OPS
Kirby Puckett – Career .318 hitter with 52 oWAR over his career and had more atbats at center field then any other outfield spot until the last 2 years of his career.
Tony Gwynn – I don’t need to go here, but he was a right fielder for the vast majority of his career, with a 66 oWAR and a -8 dWAR including 104 games at that position at age 39.
Babe Ruth – Best baseball player of all time 163.2 career WAR (can’t believe I just wrote that), habitually over weight, habitually abused his body, oh and he was also an outfielder (not a first baseman)…
So, my question is… is the athletic body type over rated? And more importantly why do you think so (or not).

Sometimes it probably is. I think one of the reasons Pujols went so low in the draft was because he had a “bad body”. But then again, he was eventually limited to 1B, which is really part of the issue with bigger guys. It just raises the bar for their offense. I think looking at athleticism has more to do with projecting a players’ defense and baserunning skills than how good a hitter they’ll be.

Other than Hack Wilson that list is full of good athletes. Babe Ruth was a GREAT athlete. Did not really get fat till he was in his late 20s. Probably a 60 runner when young and a 50 in the middle of his career. 80 hit tool, 80 power, 70 arm or something like that. Puckett and Gwynn could both run too until their early 30s. Gwynn stole 56 bases in his age 27 years.
I think we put a little too much emphasis into body type than actual athleticism.

Well you can always improve your pitch recognition and consciousness of the strike zone right? Wouldn’t that be part of the hit tool? Franco can get a little better in both of these areas. His problem is that he is a 20 runner. If he puts on 10-20 more pounds can he then stay at 3B? The Phillies originally considered to move him to catcher because of the slow foot speed. I think they saw he was quick enough to play 3B so there was less reason for the move. For Franco it might be advisable to NOT have him put on too much weight in a training program. He should work on quickness and flexibility just as much. I think I would be happy if he was a 20-25 HR guy who could stay at 3B the next 5 years than a 30+ HR guy who gets too big.

San Antonio keep david robinson on bench the whole half of season when he could play to get better draft choice. and it was duncan, look at the championship they won with duncan,

Do you think it will help Asche to give him a half a season in Philly, when he’s doing just okay in AAA? Or are you just tired of watching Michael Young?

Still don’t get the Revere hate he has been .313./.350/.350 since the beginning of May and should be the leadoff hitter.

Agreed. He’s actually hit significantly better in May/June than he did last year or the year before. Also, he is 25 — younger than Dom Brown. He has the talent to be better in center than he’s been and I think we need to give him some more time to get there. He only played 39 games there last year. I still think he will be a solid everyday center fielder.

You really do not know what you are talking about. Are the Phillies probably going anywhere? No, but your reasons for this are not correct. Ben Revere has been doing extremely well lately, so they do have a center fielder. Jimmy Rollins is still batting like a middle of the pack short stop, so the weak heating comment is over the top. Pettibone and Lannan are both solid 4+5 starters, I really don’t see how you can complain about them. Throwing a season to draft better is not a way to keep people coming to the stadium, and if people don’t come to the stadium you can’t afford all-star players.

Cole Hamels has been the weak link in the staff this year. A mediocre 7-6 record vs a horrific 2-11, would put them in the thick of things.

Hamels himself has been a bit below his career averages this year- 3.80 FIP and 3.72 xFIP against 3.60 and 3.41 norms. His ERA and W-L are crap because the defense is terrible behind him and he’s 88th out of 99 qualified starters in run support. If the Phillies could give him average defense and run support- not that they will, because they have a crappy offense and the Terrors Young on defense- they might actually win some of his starts.

I also look at his WHIP. And at 1.3 it is the highest in his career and al big part of that is his BB/9, which is also high for him. He has a difficult time putting hitters away after two strikes. Seems they foul too many and his PC spirals up too early.

Uh, no. Hamels is struggling mostly because he is getting hit hard and walking way too many guys.

I dont see them as a contender, like you do. Revere imo stinks. sorry he has no arm, no power, and makes stupid plays, like the play that allowed wright to score from first on a single. my complaint is, that if your not good enough to win the wildcard, then play some young kids to see, what you have, is that so wrong??I guess your right about lannan, he is a good pitcher for a bad team. so yes he fits in here, pettibone isnt a complete pitcher. if you dont mind a 500 or below team , then your right, if you want to win, you wont with this array of players., starting with revere and the lazy jimmy rollins., atttitude plays a important part in winning., and jimmy imo has lost it, and what good is being able to afford all star players, when you have a moron in charge like amaro, who over plays his hand with papabon, no one was going 4 years for him. like he screw up the bullpen. why pay a hurt player two years, Adams should have been on a one year deal, with a club vesting option for a second year. why sign durbin, after the year he had last season?? How long will they fill seats with this bunch of players, I live near the stadium and can see from tenth street the crowds, its getting less and less people.

It isn’t all that bad roccom.Youngsters like Biddle, Franco and Asche will be making their arrivals soon. Together with Brown, Revere, Galvis there is some young talent and the last 3 draft classes have promising prospects. Sure you need some luck and the other NL East teams are strong and a team like the Mets will have Harvey, Wheeler and Neise going for them. But you have to have some hope.

It’s bad enough we have to suffer through these repeated rants in General discussion, but why is it allowed in Box Scores? Sidenote @ Roccom just give up already with the ‘morAnic’ attempts of punctuation…Please! PS-Do you Bartel Do??

Ed just because you have good punctuation doesnt mean you know what you talking about. Why dont you take you head out of mongomery and amaro? to see what is going on with the team.

Biggest joke of the day:
“Pettibone & Lannan are solid #4 & #5 pitchers” in the rotation. Pettibone is no mystery to the hitters he is facing and Lannan has been nowhere for now and the previous season. Neither one would fit in a contending team’s rotation. Perhaps both would fit in the rotation of guaranteed second division team…if that was what was meant. Since the Phils ARE a second division team, they fit well here.
Just don’t start either one if you HAVE to win a game.

Pettibone can be very effective as a 5th. Maybe not in his rookie year this year, but at some point in his career. Lannan, OTOH, was horrible vs the Phillies over his career when he was a Nat, but held his own vs the other teams in the division, but then we are talking 2/3 being the Mets and Marlins for the most part.

ty art That was my point. lannan is okay on a bad team. Pettibone has a chance but he isn’t ready right now.He has no breaking ball. and not a great fastball. he cant make a mistake and get away with it, not with his stuff, imo needs another pitch. I guess the real point is we are a second division team, and must keep [ACCORDING TO PEOPLE ON HERE]these players to be a below or at 500 team so the fans still come out.
