Phillies Sign 1st Round Pick JP Crawford

The signing is official (as in he signed the paper), but the team has yet to announce it or the amount.  The source right now is a picture tweeted out by Crawford’s sister of him signing his contract.  The tweet has since been taken down because the news has yet to be announced.  Slot for the pick is $2,299,300 and Crawford is expected to be very close to it.

#Phillies sign 1st-rder J.P. Crawford for $2,299,300. California HSer, easily best SS in #mlbdraft, solid bat/run/D w/a little pop too.

Looks like the deal is right at slot giving the Phillies about $250,000 to entice Hernandez, Monda, and any players after the 10th round.

    1. At least initially, if he rakes there is a chance that they could move him up in August to Williamsport like they did with Biddle in 2010

  1. So we still don’t know the signing number. What do you think is more likely over slot or under slot?

    1. Well, the Mets just signed Dominic Smith, ‘Under’ and the Pirates just signed McGuire ‘Under’, so I think there is a decent chance they sign Crawford slightly ‘Under’.

  2. will be interesting to see if he has alot of errors, even if hes a good defender, everyone keeps saying that shortstops sometimes have errors because of there good range, should tell us a bit about quinn

    1. I don’t think Crawford will indicate anything about Quinn. Crawford is clearly much more polished as a defensive SS than Quinn is. Also, most of Quinn’s errors are throwing errors, not fielding.

Does that mean Hernandez is not yet signed? Chance he doesn’t sign?

    1. I think there is little chance he doesn’t sign, it just might not be an easy slot deal. The Crawford deal sets what they have to work with. Some scouts had Hernandez as a second round talent so he might want more money, plenty there to pay him with. Looks like he wants to sign as well.

    2. There has been absolutely nothing except that latin article about Hernandez, I’m sure Callis is not aware of it. I’m still a little nervous though until we get more solid confirmation.

  4. Great News. Would have been nice if the Phillies could have shaved ~300K off that value and given him a cool $2M. Very surprised that Smith and McGuire (both of whom I wanted in ~Top10) took underslot deals. I guess it is just not the Phillies way to try to shave off a bit of slot since they did not do so with any of their high round picks in recent years despite some evaluations that their were worth underslot in the rankings..

I was hoping Phillies could entice a couple of the higher rated HS guys with $250K deals which would be Top150 type money. Not an unreasonable expectation from them coming out of college in 3 years.
