Mitch Walding went 3-5 with a homerun last night. He’s walking plenty, but striking out too much. He’s having a better June than he had May, hopefully he’s settling into the league after a pretty bad slump. Speaking of walking plenty, Delvi Franciso has 20 in 30 IP. For not having been on the mound as a professional until last year, and having jumped a level, I guess he gets a pass for now, especially since he also has 33K.

Just ICYMI – a couple days ago, the club released recognizable names Miguel Alvarez, Jan Olmo, and most notably, Tyler Greene. I was going to go on a long diatribe about K Rates and small samples and BABIP, but I think if you, like me, liked Tyler Greene in the winter of 2011-2012, and you heard and ignored the arguments people made about the flaws behind his 2011 GCL stats, then you, like me, have already heard the sermon I would be trying to preach.

    1. And totally over-matched in low A ball.

      I get that most draftees, even high draftees like Greene, don’t make it to the bigs. But Greene is flaming out fast in low A, with appallingly poor stats. That’s just a huge, huge miss by the scouting department and really is kind of unacceptable from a scouting perspective.

        1. From everything I’ve heard about Hewitt, he has a great work ethic. If he doesn’t make it, it won’t be for lack of effort. Greene, on the other hand, has come to camp the last two years out of shape. He signed at the deadline and said he wanted to enjoy as much of his summer as he could. This was a wasted pick..

  2. Wow, Larry Green w/ 4k’s in 5 AB’s… when the rest of the team was on a 5k/9 pace… meaning the pitching wasn’t very good. I also find that Franco is the first player who I look for in the box scores, and given he had a day off today, it was a bit blah. Not a knock on Biddle, but since I don’t predict when he’s going to be in the line-up and I don’t see results every day, I don’t get quite as excited.

    1. Striking out a full batter more per 9 IP, but also walking a full batter more per 9 than in 2012. If he can tack back the walks just to 2012 level, his peripherals will be amazing. He’s already putting together quite a campaign, but a few more improvements and he can take that next step as a prospect.

    2. The big boys (i.e.: the “brass”) were in Lakewood watching the games a couple of days ago and I suspect they told LG2 to be more aggressive at the plate. Yesterday on MiLB.TV I could see him basically swinging out of his a$$ on everything – Balls high, in the dirt, outside.. Somebody got in his head and told him to be more aggressive. We’ll see how this plays out..

    3. Looks like two of the first three selections in the 2011 draft will not make it. Quinn is the hopeful pick.

      1. Three of the first five are looking good, though. Asche and Morgan in AAA, Quinn (defense aside) holding his own in Lakewood.

  3. Some scouts have already said biddle could get MLB batters out now. So just let him keep fin tuning his mechanics and pitches. He’s going to be an MLB 3 starter. He keeps working he will be higher. Really hope Martin turns the corner here soon.

    1. i was at the reading game last night. biddle wasn’t sharp but struggled effectively through 5 innings. i guess he was on a pitch count. he was 91-93 and occasionally 94. he had trouble getting his curve over and had inconsistent command of his fast ball. all that said, he gave up only 1 run and stuck out 5 so he was pretty good for not really being dialed in.the rest of the team played good defense but was pretty impotent offensively. the best bat on the team is jim murphy who isn’t really a prospect. will try to get to the next two games and report if i see anything interesting.

    1. Someone in the org mentioned “after the all-star break”, which is this weekend if he’s in A+. But, how soon after is another story. Could be immediately. Might not.

      1. Yup. That’s why I’m not very high on the guy. If you can’t throw strikes, you’re going to get exposed eventually.

  7. Wow – surprised Tyler Greene was released. I commented on a number of occasions last year that players typically don’t overcome being over-matched at such a high level. With a K-rate above 40% it was quite clear he was over-matched but at the same time, it seems a bit early to release a HS kid who was signed way over slot only two years ago. There has to be something more to this story as there’s little risk in him playing out this season at Williamsport.

      1. Unless you know the facts and can validate/justify, don’t assume he was released to “off field” activities.

    2. It does surprise me that Phillies would release an upside prospect before getting through year #4. Maybe they figured sending him out there despite the pitiful results was showing the other guys in the organization that draft/bonus matters more than ‘production’. Might not have anything to do with Tyler Greene’s ‘off-field’ actions.
      With the draft completed, there was likely no roster spot for him in WPT. Hopefully another organization gives him a chance to see if he can make the bigs.

  8. Asche with a .173 ISO in 276 plate appearances at AAA. Everything looks good except for the K-rate. I’ve got the 6-hole reserved for him on opening day next season.

    2. I’m not arguing that he should be brought up (he shouldn’t, yet) but does anyone think that he’d be much worse than Michael “GIDP” Young at this point?

      1. Assuming there’s a team interested in Young at the deadline, I would be just fine with a combination of Frandsen and Galvis splitting time at 3rd. Asche needs a full season at LV and outside of a Sept callup I see little value in rushing him to the majors

        1. Asche, I assume, is not eligible for the AFL this year since he went last year…is that a correct assumption or can he go again two years consecutively?

        2. With a team like the phillies going nowhere. What harm would it do to bring asche up to play at the major league level?

    3. Third base looks to be a high value position going forward with Asche, Franco, Walding and recently drafted Trey Williams.

  11. Yeah, i’m starting to wonder about Jan Hernandez. Heard conflicting reports on what he was expecting in terms of placement in the draft. Some people want to come in a prove everybody else wrong. I think there was some of that in Cord’s signing. And based on his own statements immediately following the draft, I’m finding it hard to understand what is going on with Crawford. Sure with we could get these guys signed and assigned.

  12. TOS has pretty good evidence that both Hernandez and Crawf have now signed. Those pitchers from Colorado are now my personal priority.
