Hot or Not

A look at the time period of June 6th thru June 12th. As always, a minimum of 12AB’s for hitters to be considered.  Some random thoughts…When Utley gets activated should some thought be given to calling Asche up for a month while sending Howard to the DL and Young over to first?  I would hope Kelly Dugan is in Baseballtown come July…Tyson Gillies has fallen back into the same old thing….With his small frame, Hoby Milner is putting up some big numbers…I am beginning to get concerned about Shane Watson. Not panicked yet, but concerned….Very nice to see Diekman on the Hot list. The Phils desperately need a dependable LOOGY. Diekman isnt there yet, but another 5-10 good outings and maybe he gets the call…Finally, Steven Inch has the distinction of making the Not Hot List as a starter and reliever this week…On the bright side, he is an SAL All Star.

  1. Dugan and/or Altherr will get called up to Reading soo, if for nothing else, to get them both eligible to play in the AFL.

    1. That AFL team will be interesting in following if they are both playing. I wonder if Hewitt will also be selected to attend!

      1. Crazy that I’m saying this, but a Reading OF of Dugan/Hewitt/Altherr is pretty damn intriguing

    2. Does Lakewood affect Clearwater guys getting promoted? Meaning do the phillies delay moving clearwater players up because they have noone to bring up behind them?

  2. I like the idea of bringing Asche up. The big club is just painful to watch right now. Adding Asche, Utley and Ruiz can only help. Altherr may not be ready yet, but I think Dugan and Franco should be promoted soon.

    1. I think a lot of people would say that there is no need to rush Franco because he is only 20. I’d say why hold him back just because he is 20. AA is a big jump and I’d love to see what Franco can do against the better pitching there. I don’t think there is anything else for him to learn or prove at A+.

      1. Yea I have changed my mind on Franco. I was for letting him advance one level at a time but Franco is exceeding my expectations plus I see him as a possible real impact player for the big club. Starting to believe Brown, Franco and Dugan may be our future 3,4,5 hitters hopefully in 2015.

        1. I’ve been in the don’t rush him camp as well, but the Phils are going to have to get impactful players from somewhere in the near future….might as well be a little agresive and see what this kid can handle.

  3. I don’t think you promote Asche until the Phillies are actually read to play him. I don’t think the Phillies are ready to give up on the season just yet (whether they should be or not is a different argument).

Between Frandsen, Galvis, and M. Young, Asche would most likely languish on the bench. There is no value in that. Asche might benefit from a full season in AAA.

Maybe you call up Asche in September. Outside of that, I think you look to 2014 for him.

    1. Agree…. if Sandberg were the manager then Asche would play, but Charlie will only find selected once-a-week ‘spots’ for him….Dom Brown 2010/11 all over again.

  4. The Phillie’s front office is hot because of their awesome draft. Sound the Nafferty.

  5. I’m not worried about Watson yet, they’ve taken away the 2 Seam, and take away his best pitch (curveball) in the first three innings so he can develop a changeup and build arm strength with the 4 seam fastball.

  6. Bringing up Asche would be pointless with Charlie still as manager. He’d sit while Charlie would play Freddy and his .220 batting average. I’m not too concerned with Watson as well. I def think he should be demoted to the Crosscutters though. But hopefully he can put it all together.

  7. Didnt the Phillies take away Floyd’s curveball early on and then it was never the same afterwards? I think there is a danger taking away a guy’s bread and butter.

    1. The Phillies have limited Watson as opposed to stripping it completely. Floyd lost the feel for his curve because he was not allowed ot throw it at all.

      1. Maybe the Phillies management is getting smarter. 🙂
Major League team is just painful to watch. How can the bullpen continue to be this bad if all these young arms are waiting to break out?

  8. Maybe Asche could use 30-40 more games at AAA before coming up…at the same time trade(s) are concluded that MUST garner REAL & CLOSE prospects to join Asche with the big club to begin the rebuilding process. Also allowing Cesar H. to continue his AAA experience, then bring him up, too.

Utley may or may not ever return to play 2nd base. Let’s stop kidding ourselves. This team is moribund.

A new beginning must obtain…not later, but ASAP. It is painful to watch the collapse of a one time powerhouse. And, while we’re at it, let’s move Franco and Dugan up to Reading which just might bring us two new MLB players in 1 1/2 seasons.

    1. I have always felt that Utley was the most important guy in the clubhouse during the great run the Phillies enjoyed. But at this point I am not sure how you bring him back. He is never going to make it thru a full season again. That seems pretty obvious.

As a decision based on emotion, you bring him back because of what he has meant and hope for the best. But as a decision based purely on his health and the fact that he is likely only able to play half a season anymore, he probably should not be back.
