Fifth Round Pick In Action Tonight

Wanted to headline this one for all of you so no one misses it – 2013 5th Round Pick, LHP Ben Wetzler, is starting for Oregon State tonight in their deciding super regional game. The game is set for 10pm EST. Wetzler was good last Sunday, allowing 1 run, 4H, 4BB and striking out 10 in a 9-inning complete game victory over Texas A&M.

Now, Mike Stutes said this afternoon on Twitter that the contest will be televised on ESPNU, though my local listings don’t have it. I think it may turn out to be on ESPN2, superceding SportsCenter that’s still listed at that time, and if not, it may be online at ESPN3/WatchESPN if your cable company works with that service. If anyone finds a definitive answer on that, or sees it on their TV when it begins, please be kind enough to mention it in the comments.

18th round pick, RHP Dan Child is also on that squad, though I don’t see where he’s pitched at all in the super regionals. BA has nothing about an injury in their draft scouting report, so I’m not sure what’s up with him.

  1. Pretty sure Child pitched game 1 in 10th inning of their loss and gave up 2 ERs so it was not a good game though I didn’t see the end of the game. He will either go back for Sr year to improve his stock or the other side of it is he could feel the opposite that his future will be better in the Phillies minor leagues.

  2. I’ve liked what I’ve seen. Plus fastball from the left side. He seems to control it well. A decent slider than can be improved upon. Control is spotty currently. Curveball needs lots of help so far. His delivery could be refined a little it looks like as well.

    1. Dunno that I would call his fastball plus- 88-91 mph is average but the blurb on the mlb draft tracker says it has good movement. Otherwise, yeah, his changeup looks good. Breaking ball… eh, he can work on it.

      1. I caught some of the 4th inning, didn’t see him hit 90. Looks like he’s going to have to have some good secondaries and plus control to have success.

    1. Just cut it to 4-3 – breaking ball down for a two run double but it was a good hit. 131 pitches, finally the manager took him out . 7 2/3 but Wetzler did a nice job so I hope they hang on. He put Boyd in who was the Game 1 starter just on Saturday.

Seems to have pretty good everything but needs to work on that breaking ball …considering he’s a college junior, there’s some good potential. Seems to have good mental makeup to me based on one game.

      1. 131 pitches at his age! Can imagine how many pitches he has thrown this past season with the Beavers. Phillies may need to give him some rest time

  3. You guys think he’s going to keep the curveball along with the slider, or scrap it and try to develop a change?

  4. I liked what I saw from him. Nice arm angle, effortless repeatable delivery. Humped it up to 92 or so, but fastball location spotty last night. Curveball not much to look at but other secondary pitches had hitters flailing. Mostly lived on the outside, like Tom Glavine in his prime.

Of course, with a pitch count of 131 following on a 121, he will probably come to the Phillies needing surgery on his shoulder. I hate college baseball coaches. I fell asleep after he finished a strong 7th with pitch count in the 110’s, assuming that was his last inning. Unpleasantly disturbed to see that the manager trotted him out for the 8th.

  5. He looked good to me but he looked like a guy who could ultimately become a lefty bullpen guy. His curve was very effective and he threw several change ups for strike outs early in the game. 131 pitches? That’s why college pitchers scare you, the college managers just kill these guys’ arms. I bet he signs after their tournament run and the Phils shut him down.

    1. Better give all the college arms an MRI on their shoulders/elbows. Maybe they do that anyway.

  6. He looked decent. The fastball isn’t plus, but it’s big league average, which is fine if his changeup is as good as advertised. 131 pitches is criminal. These college coaches should be strung up by their cajones for potentially robbing these (unpaid) pitchers of millions of dollars for the sake of furthering their own careers. Disgraceful and it happens all the time.
