Surprised I’m first. Continued Colorado connection with Keys and Jax. Jax from Brad Lidge’s HS. Denton Keys is a Kansas commit. Griffin Jax is an Air Force commit which I would assume would be difficult to keep him from? Joey Martarano is a Boise State football commit (Boise State doesn’t have baseball) which is interesting. Logan Pierce is the son of his coach at Troy.

Lee Ridenhour has great numbers. Originally was at Kansas and then transferred after back injury. Went to JUCO where he had excellent numbers hitting and pitching and transferred to Austin Peay where he pitched very well. Excellent control.

They remind me of the college numbers of former reliever Bryan Morgado. I remember he was like a 6/7/8 ERA, huge BB/9 guy in college (also a lefty). At least the Phillies didn’t draft this guy in the 4th round like Morgado.

#275 in BA. Not bad. I assume he’d sign for $100K if that was all that was offered but Phillies could likely sweeten the pot just a bit if needed.

Well who knows how much the Phillies were offering him… but I’ve always been of the opinion for a HS player if you get drafted by an MLB team and are offered $400,000 or more you should sign.
Lot’s of things can happen in college and guess what the college coach does not have *YOUR* best interest in mind. They have no loyalty to you, if you’re a pitcher and struggle you can get dumped the bullpen and knocked out of the rotation. If a ‘better/touted’ recruit shows up you can lose your spot.
However, we’ve seen examples time and time again that once an MLB team invests hundreds of thousands of dollars into a player. That player gets *MORE* chances than the cheap signs. The team has an investment in them and it can’t be recouped unless they somehow make it to the MLB level and succeed (or show enough to be trade bait).

.68 ERA in 66.2 innings. 32 hits,110/25 K/BB ratio. Pretty ridiculous numbers albeit at a low level.

Martarano is virtually unsignable at that slot. He’s committed to play QB at Boise St, which is no small feat. If we somehow save up enough maybe we could throw some money at him. His raw talent would put him in the top 5 rounds. I love this draft. We picked a lot of the guys I was excited about before it started.

Then it would presumably mean he’ll play baseball part-time “for the Phillies.”

He’s a linebacker, not a QB. He will play football at Boise State, which does not
have a baseball program.
My understanding is that Martarano has indicated he will sign for slot ($100k) and play pro baseball for the Phillies in the summer (extended spring training, maybe GCL). Since, Boise doesn’t have a baseball program, there apparently isn’t an eligibility issue. Once his college football career is over, and assuming he doesn’t go to the NFL, he in essence becomes a college signee and will play baseball full time.

I think so, yes.
I believe the Phillies (or some team) had a similar arrangement with Ricky Williams (the Texas RB) in the 1990s. Williams obviously was better at football and ended up going to the NFL, where he had a decent but somewhat disappointing (and rather bizarre) NFL.career.

Yes, Ricky Williams played in the Phils org. Seems like a handful of guys have done this in “recent” memory, it’s just not in my memory to recall their names.

I was reviewing bonus pool values and looks like the largest ‘break’ is between about 5th and 7th round since after that there is not much difference between the 11-40 bonus limit of $100K. With College Seniors at 8,9,10 Phillies should have about $300K extra. Looks like about $200K will be going to Sandburg. That does not leave much to use to go after many HS fliers.
I do agree that the ‘sweet spot’ for most guys would be about that $400K number (~125th best player in draft) proposed earlier to try to buy out a college commitment. If Phillies can pull another $0.5M out of the pool that should be enough to go hard after a couple HS guys.

Very unlikely that Biggio signs, which is why he was still available in round 29. I’m guessing it would take at least $!M (perhaps well over $1M), and I doubt the Phillies are willing to spend that much.

Martarano would be smart to sign because he’s more likely to make the MLB than the NFL.
LikeLike
I think he’s actually one the EASIEST signs outside of college seniors that the Phillies drafted.
He’ll get $100,000 in his pocket and all he has to do is play show up and play baseball for two months a year (June & July) Towards the end of July to possibly early August he’ll cut his minor league season short to return to Boise State for football/classes.
LikeLike
Agree. There really is no down side for Martarano to sign. He still gets to play football at Boise State and gets his $100k signing bonus from the Phillies. He will lose his football scholarship, but I’m sure the Phillies will agree to pay his college tuition. And the Boise State football program likes the arrangement because it saves a scholarship. It’s a win-win-win all for all involved.

Is that a smart move to pay $100K for a guy whose development is going to be severely slowed by his football commitment? Baseball is hard enough for full time players.
Given his high ranking and the little impact (does not affect official draft bucket, barely affects the Phillies budget), certainly seems like an okay move for both parties.

6’4 230 Called “surprisingly polished” on MLB.com. Well worth 100,000. If he hits well enough, maybe he’ll quit football.
LikeLike
It’s definitely a risk, but it would of taken a lot more then 100k to buy him out of his football commitment so I guess it’s a calculated risk.
LikeLike
Right, and at $100k, it’s hardly a huge gamble for the Phillies. While Martarano playing both sports isn’t ideal for the Phillies, allowing him to do so makes signing possible, and for a much smaller investment and thus less financial risk.
Think of Martarano as a college signee with a $100k up-front retainer. The only difference is that he’ll play 2 to 3 months each year in the Phillies organization rather than in a college program.

I’ll tell ya what, I really like what the phillies have done in this draft so far. If they can sign their top guys and maybe scoop up one or two of the HS or CC arms in the later rounds, this draft is shaping up to have a ton of talent for us.

Phillies should certainly get credit for Sandberg and what appears to be good draft cap management. He seems very similar to the ‘toolshed/no pitch recognition’ type the Phillies are known to draft but at least it was in the 3rd round.
Phillies definitely going after the football players again this year, (Greene and Cozens last year) with Sandberg, Sweaney, and Martarano.

“Phillies definitely going after the football players again this year, (Greene and Cozens last year) with Sandberg, Sweaney, and Martarano.”
And as is usually the case they play baseball like football players.
If you want to win baseball games you draft baseball players, including guys like Rowdy Tellez who can swing a bat.

The son of Astros great Craig Biggio was finally chosen Saturday by the Philadelphia Phillies with the No. 871 overall pick during the 29th round.
Cavan plans to join his brother, Connor, at Notre Dame and has no intention of playing for the Phillies.
“(Cavan) is going to school,” Craig said Saturday. “He had some options on the first day (of the draft). He is excited about college.”

Short of being a top-10 pick I think he was always going to Notre Dame. I’m guessing some teams called during the Supplemental round into the 2nd round trying to see if they could get him to sign for a number if they drafted him there.

It’d be nice, but it hasn’t been their MO to make a big splash. Plus they’re slotted for just shy of $2.3 million this year.
LikeLike
they are linked to potential million dollar deals with both Luis Encarnacion and Micker Zapata. I’d take the two of them in a heartbeat. Especially because Devers is going to inspire a bidding war, and the other interest teams (boston, houston, seattle) have bigger allotments than we do. Encarnacion sounds like the phillies are the front runner. Zapata sounds like a three team race with the phillies, white sox, and padres

They were linked to Zapata early in the process, but the latest rumors only mention Encarnacion

Let me try to understand, i know nothing about he guys you are talking about, say we give 2.7 million to a prospect and 1 million to the other, do we lose draft choices?? or just pay a tax. I think matt said something about draft choice, how much over budject do you have to go to lose draft picks is my question.
LikeLike
from what i understand, its similar to the US draft in that if u exceed the limit by a certain amount, u forfeit your draft picks. However, there are caveats. Signings under like 50k dont count against the cap. we have something like 2.4 mil this year for international signings, so if we make a big splash on the two i listed above, hopefully we could squeeze them both in under.

You are not allowed to sign an expensive player in the next international period.
