Box Score Recap – 6/1/2013

June 1 and DSL starts up. None of thier starting nine are jumping out as big bonus guys. Anyone remember any of those names? Jermaine Mitchell seems to have been the catalyst for a 10-9 Lehigh Valley vistory, as he was 3-3 with a HR, 2 BB and scored 4 runs. Anthony Hewitt went deep for Reading.

Word came down that Cameron Perkins hit the DL. He was hit in the hand with a pitch two nights ago. I haven’t heard a diagnosis yet. “Hurty hand”, perhaps? “Ouchy hand”, maybe?

    1. With each dominant start Lee becomes more and more valuable as a trade piece. I always preferred they keep Lee to pair with Hamels with the caveat that they move him if they can somehow rid themselves of Howard or acquire Top 10 talent in return. The first scenario isn’t going to happen – it will be interesting to see if the 2nd one does

    2. Come July I do both. Paps to the Tigers, and Lee to an AL contender after the auction commences. . Of course next years pitching staff may look a bit shaky, but in 2015 and beyond it could be strong. Fortune sides with him who dares, not sure Ruben dares.

  1. The DSL team has 2 guys named Enmanuel and one guy named Emmanuel. Let’s hope they all make it to the Phils.

    1. Enmanuel seems like a very uncommon name to have 2 on the same team. Both were probably signed by a Dominican scout also named Enmanuel and a cross-checker named Bort.

  2. Does anyone know why Cesar Hernandez is out of options? He was signed the same day as Galvis & this is first ever call to up to the majors. I googled it but can’t find anything

    1. He used them the past three years when he was on 40 man and sent down from Spring Training, he might get a 4th option year. He has one less than Galvis because Galvis did not use an option last year

        1. This is his last option year, he can go up and down an unlimited number of times (respecting the rules on minimum time in the minors between call ups). He will be guaranteed a 4th option year based on his time before full season ball.

  3. I think the to trade or not to trade Cliff Lee decision will come down to the following: would you rather have whatever prospects are being offered or would you rather sign Cliff Lee, as if he was a free agent this off season, to a 2 year, $48M deal, with a 3rd year option that holds a $12M buyout, so guaranteed $58M for 2 years, at ages 35-36. With how quickly Halladay deteriorated, I think the Phils have to be careful before assuming they’ll get the same years out of Lee in 14 and 15 that they are getting this year. If the prospects offered are a top 50 and a top 100, I think they have to pull the trigger. For me, its not about money, its about acquiring young talent.

As for Howard, I don’t think the Phils should be in a hurry to get rid of him. Not because I think he is doing well or anything, but I don’t believe he is blocking anyone right now and the Phils don’t have an immediate need for that money. If Howard was blocking someone in AAA that had legitimate potential to be an everyday big leaguer, I’d feel differently, but if the Phils feel that way about Ruf, he can play LF tomorrow and they can move Brown to RF and put Delmon Young on the bench or the next train out of town. As time passes, the Howard contract gets better financially in that there is less money to be paid, and if he’d have a strong season next year, he would be slightly more tradeable next July than he is now. I just don’t see a reason to rush into it.

  4. Is Perkins a legit prospect? Until the article in today’s paper he seemed to be below the radar. I have noticed he has a good average but don’t know about his power, speed or fielding.

      1. I read that article and i am not sure how much stock to put into an unnamed scout but the consensus is that Perkins is a “ball player”. I guess the Phils do draft those!!

        1. The article seems like Perkins is a prospect who is hitting well and plays the field well though it seems he might not be the most graceful OF. I believe we might see him in Reading after the FSL All Star Game.

          1. Should be “The article describes Perkins as promising prospect who is hitting well and plays the field well.”

  5. No errors for Quinn is a glorious sight to behold and no stike outs for Greene but for totally different reasons .
