The night of debuts, all of them solid to very good. David Buchanan and Austin Wright were very good. Freddy G. and CRiv were solid. I don’t know about about Freddy G. at the bottom of the order. Parent said that putting him at the top of the order kept him accountable for his offense. It was good to hear today on this site that Collier is getting tired. He has really fallen off lately, but this is a legitamate excuse. Jiwan James has 22 steals, though too many CS’s. Matair has six bombs after missing time due to injury. At 28, Gosewich seems a bit old to be taken seriously. Mathieson with another solid start. Lots of good stuff happening today.
I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited about two 22-year-old pitchers in the NYPL. I’d love to hear how Morgado held up over 4 IP and how Garner looked.
Awesome Austin Wright with a great start at Lakewood. Good work Austin!
I charted every one of mathiesons pitches. If anyone wants the info, I can type it up. He was anywhere from 92-98 with his fastball. Any time there were two strikes, he broke out the 98mph fastball. I have amounts pitches as well. He was at 94 or so and looked sharp. There wasn’t one hard hit ball on a breaking ball he threw. Of course, he throws so few and misses a lot.
Rivero made a boneheaded play at third that let the winning run score. Galvis airballed one throw, but was solid besides that. I wouldn’t say misplayed a ball, but he definitely had an uncomfortable moment getting the ball back in on a rather routine ball where he decided to make a 360 turn and throw an award one-hop
How hard did Aumont throw? Did he appear to be dominant.
I ask because it appears that Aumont is in full-on beast mode. In his last 7 2/3 innings, he has struck out 14 batters, walked 2 and given up 1 run (and that was 6 appearances ago). Did anyone believe last year, when he was scuffling in Clearwater, see this coming so soon? Even I, who was one of his biggest supporters, did expect such dominance so soon.
Stuff matters and he has always had Kevin Brown-type stuff. Last year he got a little hurt (a big concern looking forward) but they also put him in the rotation. I thought it was to not waste this quality of arm in the bullpen. But in hindsight the primary goal may have been innings so he can learn to pitch. The poor results could have been a result of this experiment. They probably should have started him in Clearwater last year, but it does not appear that last year did him much harm and might have given him the innings to refine his secondary pitches better.
The pitch sequence for Aumont was
1st Batter
96 FB for called strike
79 CB for swinging strike
81 CB for ball
80 CB for ball
96 FB for foul
81 CB for strike 3
2nd Batter
95 FB for swinging strike
79 CB for called strike
81 CB for foul
81 CB for ball
96 FB for foul
90 Cutter for ball
94 FB for strike 3
3rd Batter
81 CB for ball
95 FB for foul
94 FB for ball
94 FB for foul
80 CB for foul
87 Cutter for ball
95 FB for ball
97 FB for foul
80 CB for flyout to center
Has anybody heard anything about Morgado possibly transitioning to the rotation, or was today just a “bullpen game” in Williamsport? Given his age and dominance this year it seems likely that Morgado will be skipping over Lakewood.
He has been pitching like a starting pitcher since July 8. He has pitched every fifth day with 3 or 4 inning pitched per apperance. He has in fact been the second “starting” pitcher in the Adam Morgan starts since July 8. They wanted to use him as a starting pitcher but their was no room until the Jarrod Cosart trade created the opportunity.
I don’t really like how Clearwater has Brandon Tripp and now Cyle Hankert. Neither are prospects and have both played at higher levels in previous years. I would much rather see younger outfielders playing in Clearwater. I think Collier and Santana should stay in Lakewood but I would much rather see Hewitt, Rice, or Alvarez playing in Clearwater. Hewitt needs to move up since he is getting old and has almost 800 abs in Lakewood. Alvarez is having a decent year and is a little old for Lakewood at 21. Rice only has 36 abs above the GCL but he is old for Lakewood at 22.
They should buy him some puzzle books or something…I think he’s already challenged about as much as he can be on the baseball diamond judging from his results.
Actually he is beginning to look like a player in that he throws to the right base with authority and his baserunning is greatly improved. Unfortunately he is still fooled often at the plate but does get his hacks in. Just seems to be overanxious with the stick.
He has talent and I have renewed hope.
Challenged? Hewitt is challenged evry night not to swing at pitches that come within a mile of the plate, but he didn’t get the memo. Here’s another “challenge” take a walk more than 2 times per month and get the OBP above .300
I think that adding guys like that is the organization trying to provide a boost to the team’s offense and help them win some games. There’s only one month left, so a promo for someone who is undeserving and is playing at a lower level would be useless.
Great line for Pointer. Homer and triple in the same game is very exciting. Also good that Greene doubled again.
Triple for Dugan and a really nice line with the 3 hits/homer for Altherr. Good outing for Morgado. Also nice to get a Garner sighting even if he was rather wild.
Good hitting for Santana tonight, and nice on-base job by Alvarez. Great Sally debut for Wright.
Mattair with the home run!…along with half of the other Clearwater hitters.
Galvis and Rivero each with a hit in their LHV debuts. Like the base steal from Galvis too.
How about Ranfi Casimiro? Yes, that’s a real name. He pitched 5 2/3 innings of no hit ball in the DSL. He’s listed as 6’8″ and is 19 years old. He had 7 Ks and 3 BBs. He’s pitched 17 innings so far and given up 1 run. .51 ERA if you’re doing the math at home.
Perci Garner had 2 BBs, hit a batter and threw a WP but no runs and no hits and got the win but only because Morgado made his 1st start and went 4 innings.
Could be a 6’0″ kid that sprouted 7 or 8 inches in high school and suddenly became more of a prospect. Intriguing to say the least, though I could also see DSL kids having trouble with the delivery from such a tall pitcher (ala Happ) that it might hide mediocre stuff at lower levels. I always have a yellow light flashing when looking at Dominican 19-year-olds. On the other hand, each kid is different. Could be a kid whose parents did not want him to sign before he finished high school.
I hope the height thing isn’t like Matt German a bunch of years ago. They listed him at 6′ 8″ but he’s actually 6′ standing on the Philadelphia City phone book.
Perci who? You mean the guy drafted high last year with the gun for an arm who has been limited due to injury? The guy that throws low to mid 90’s? Just another guy that is nowhere near the top 30, rightfully so, that could end up in the top 10 in a year if things fall right.
It sounds like everyone is okay, but holy cow, this nearly ended up being a major disaster. Take a look at how close the bus was to going off a highway bridge. Yikes!!!

Wow I look at the system and see good depth. I look at the big league roster and see guys like Lee, Halladay and Pence. Potentially Oswalt for the stretch run and really can’t believe we still have the farm system that we do.
Went to the Reading game last night, all the prospects were on the other side of the field. Singleton came up with the bases loaded, no outs and hit the first pitch out to right for a slam. Pretty cool intro to the team. the Nats have a few players on their Harrisburg team that will play in the majors.
Isn’t it time that Shreve gets moved to C Water? What’s a guy have to do? he’s thrown 19 straight shutout innings if I added correctly and he’s too old to still be there. Congrats on Garner’s first professional win, even if it was ugly.
. “We could still use a bullpen piece, but . . . that piece might be in our minor leagues. We got two or three good, young prospects down there. I’m not saying we have to go make another big trade or something.” – Charlie Manuel
The Inky said he specifically mentioned Schwimmer and Aumont by name
Hi guys. Well, it seems a little anticlimactic now, but I have a brief report on last night’s Crosscutters-Cyclones game in Brooklyn, before they all almost went to The Show in the sky.
These are just highlights/general impressions, with the caveat that I am first of all not a scout and the Williamsport stadium doesn’t do pitch speeds. Couldn’t manage to get close to the actual scouts and their guns until close to the end of the game.
The highlight of the game, as it turned out, was a bench-clearing brouhaha at home plate after a collision between Cole Frenzel and the immortally named Williamsport catcher Bob Stumpo. I mention this only because 1)Stumpo blocked the plate, applied the tag and won the fight and 2)the Cyclones fans booed Bob Stumpo mercilessly the rest of the night. Bob Stumpo!
Ok, on to the more serious stuff. Morgado struck out five and seemed to be getting a ton of ground balls, some of which found holes, but overall he was very effective. Perci Garner followed him and, as advertised, seemed to be throwing pretty hard but clearly had no idea where his pitches were going. The Cyclones players literally were just standing up there with their bats on their shoulders until he got two strikes. One 3-2 pitch bounced up there about four feet in front of the plate. Then he wild pitched the guy to second, and struck out the next guy on another wild pitch, necessitating a throw to first. The inning after that, he walked a guy and hit a guy. Stumpo was running out to the mound to talk to him it seemed like every other batter or so. Realize he’s just coming back from an injury, but I would say the Perci Garner project is very, very much a work in progress.
As far as the hitters go, Aaron Altherr looked very impressive. Also, Aaron Altherr’s name is apparently pronounced “Al-teer” (at least by the PA announcers) and he appears to be black, which kind of surprised me, because for some reason I thought he was Dutch. Whatever his national origin, Aaron Altherr can hit, which he demonstrated by belting a high fastball way out to left in the general vicinity of the Wonder Wheel. He had a couple of other hits besides, and seemed to be rattling the Brooklyn pitchers on the basepaths, and made at least one nice running catch in left. He looks way to athletic to be wasted there. Cody Asche (whose name is pronounced “Ash-ee”) had a big double, and looked pretty good at second base. Kelly Dugan hit a gapper and legged out a triple–he’s really pretty fast. Martinez did nothing special, other than make a fairly decent running catch in foul territory for the final out of the game. Kyrell Hudson is, as advertised, totally lost at the plate. I was very much looking forward to seeing Maikel Franco, but it seems I missed him by a couple of hours, and he is now in Lakewood. From what I saw it seems like Altheer belongs back up there too. There doesn’t seem like there’s much more for him to learn from his stint in the NY Penn League.
Reading loses another player to injury..they only have 10 non pitchers active as Evans went down with a fractured hand. They need to move someone up from Clearwater. Hey I know Kennelly can play many positions but would Jiwan James in center for the rest of the month be better?
The night of debuts, all of them solid to very good. David Buchanan and Austin Wright were very good. Freddy G. and CRiv were solid. I don’t know about about Freddy G. at the bottom of the order. Wow…now I need to get used to a whole new order of players. So much to be excited about still.

Rupp!!! – Sounds like something after too many dogs at the ballpark but great to see him keep hitting. Any thoughts on whether Tuffy gets a call up in September?

Also, for those of you who are interested, here is an action shot of the brawl, actually more of a post-action shot. (It was over pretty quick):

Even though it’s today’s game not yesterday, try to direct your attention to Austin Hyatt at Reading.

Reading loses another player to injury..they only have 10 non pitchers active as Evans went down with a fractured hand. They need to move someone up from Clearwater. Hey I know Kennelly can play many positions but would Jiwan James in center for the rest of the month be better?
