  1. It looks as if Mario Hollands’ job is to get innings in this year. As a college pitcher, he should be doing well. He is showing that he can handle Class A hitters. As a left-hander he is an interesting pitcher. He should probably be considered for moving up if some of the Clearwater pitchers move up to that juggernaut Reading at midyear.

    1. PP typically does quite a bit of pre-draft stuff but its not usually until late May/early June as lots of prospects are still playing ball right now and the rankings will change.

    2. This years draft will be hard to handicap for the Phillies’ first pick. Tampa has 3 picks between 25-38, before the Phillies first choice. They seem to pick the same type of player the Phillies like in that range. I expect the Rays to choose a few Phillies’ targets before pick 39.

      1. The Phillies are hard to handicap because Kelly Dugan and Mike Costanzo weren’t top 200 rated picks, but that didn’t prevent $$$ from forcing them into becoming the Phils top pick in years the Phils didn’t have a first round selection.

Most teams would look for “tough signs” here with both 2nd round picks since the Phils don’t have a 1st round choice, but $$$ sees things differently. He sees a smile on Bud Selig’s face and wants to keep him smiling.

The Phils finish at the very bottom of the game in draft spending in years they don’t have a first round choice.

That’s what I want to change. I want picks from Baseball America’s Top 50 list. And I want them paid to sign.

        1. After the top 10 it is a crapshoot. Don’t get caught up in the hype for 20 – 50 they basically have the same chance as 51 to 100.

          1. Why do people feel the need to even engage this loathsome troll? And why hasn’t he been banned, after repeatedly ignoring PP’s final warning?

            Like

            1. Because it’s really hard to ban people on a message board if someone is determined to post and uses things like IP spoofers.

            2. Although the $$$ thing in every post is irritating, he doesn’t bother me as much as most. Outside of his ridiculous obsession with Rizzotti (and he is far from alone on that one) and Dave Montgomery, his posts are no worse than some others. He just likes being controversial.

            3. Mike, I don’t really agree. Mainly because the the $$$ is not just an annoying quirk, but permeates his view of the system. It’s not just that he disagrees with the team’s decisions, it’s that the team makes “obviously” wrong decisions because they are cheap/want to keep Selig happy. It’s revolting.

Of course that’s not the ONLY problem. Saying his posts are “no worse than some others” is problematic on two grounds. One is his obnoxious tone. But the other is that “some other” people commenting on the site have some pretty … uninformed … opinions. So you are at beast damning with faint praise.

          2. I really don’t believe that the draft is a crapshoot even after the first 10 picks. If it were the teams would just fire all of their scouts and buy Baseball America. If the draft is a crapshoot than the Phillies scouting department should get no praise for finding the guys they do like Singleton or Pettibone or whoever. There was no skill involved. Just luck.

        2. The Phillies draft their tough signs in later rounds. Of course dolts like you completely ignore this to further your own agenda.

        3. Well on one hand, everyone is tired of the Dave $$$ thing. Mostly it’s ridiculous to say that the Phillies are cheap anymore. But you’re far from the first poster to wish they would spend a little more on the draft. Aside from 2008, I think we’ve hoped for a little more invested in the draft in all recent seasons.

    3. Definitely will have some draft stuff up in the next week or so. Its really tough because the Phillies are outside of the first round, after spending $125M on Cliff Lee, so its tough to predict who will be available there. But I’ll look at some guys I find interesting who might be there.

  2. Altherr has 6 SBs and hasn’t been caught yet. Can you imagine if he was getting on base with any regularity?

  3. I just got a look at Stutes. I am impressed. Late movement is the only movement that counts in the majors.
Also impressed with Ruiz. He started the third batter with a slider and didn’t ask Wheeler’s permission (if I hear first ball fastball one more time). Then finished the batter off with another breaking ball. Good luck Mike

  4. Yeah besides that first pitch (long fly ball) I was impressed with Stutes. He was going against the 1-3 hitters on Arizona. I’m hoping when Contreras comes back that they send Herndon down. I think he has some things to work on.

    Like

    1. Can he do that in the minors then? I can’t help but be annoyed all that Herndon is being given without earning it.

I suppose that is the vagary of the rule5 draft, but I would suggest that command is part of having good stuff and that someone with 2Ks and 5bbs in 7.2 innings by definition does not really have good stuff (numbers not out of line of what should be expected by his career stats, mind you).

      Like

      1. In Herndon’s case, his good stuff implies that he has pitches that can get people out: a decent sinker, a promising slider, good velocity. But no matter how good you are, you have to throw strikes. I think if Stutes performs well, you can see Herndon getting sent down once Contreras comes off the DL.

        Like

        1. I understood you were implying he has a good arm, but he is one of those guys who’s stuff may look better than it is and the best evidence for that is the results. I don’t happen to think his stuff looks so hot, but some on here obviously agree

      2. Interesting that sample size is disregarded when belittling Herndon’s performance against major leaguers. It was so readily used as a defense for Mathieson for his poor 10 inning performance in spring training.
Herndon has hundreds of professional innings that say he doesn’t walk guys at a high rate. The seven innings you point to, are out of the norm.

        Like

        1. Umm. Walk rate is not my chief concern at all friend. It is his obvious hittability. He has hundreds of professional innings, as you say, that clearly indicate that he gives up lots of hits, and rarely misses bats. Minor, majors, spring training, regular season (god forbid, postseason). everywhere, all the time. Now I would say that the walk rate this season is an indicator of his trying to miss bats, but failing. happens to a lot of guys who’s stuff just doesn’t play in the bigs. But walks are not my issue, but if anything, they are symptomatic of what is.

    1. Altherr- 3 SB , resulting in a couple of runs scored, and an OF assist, some might be interested in that and part of the story for a game’s performance.

  6. Geancarlo Mendez is a player than some of us [a fellow named Tiggerhawk is another] were strongly advocating last year when he played in the GCL. He was dismissed as being too old [he is 21 so certainly age appropriate for Lakewood] but was an RBI machine in the GCL and made the Post Season All-Star team with the championship Phillies.

Better yet, he is a guy who can play 1st, 2nd and 3rd base, is beginning to show good power and knocked in 40 runs in 52 games last year. I think he is a guy well worth watching, especially since he plays 3rd base, a position of need.

If he continues to hit, the Phils might well promote him to Clearwater at some point and then he becomes a potential Top 30 prospect in my book. He also pushes Mattair, which is also a good thing.

    1. I agree, he’s making himself into someone to watch. Any word on his defensive abilities at 3B?

      Like

      1. He was supposedly not that good at 2B which is why many of us (along with his age) discounted his performance last year. Don’t know much about 3B and assume he is fine at LF or 1B. If he continues to hit like a corner infielder this year then he does become a more intriguing prospect. Sometimes there is a little bit of a DSL/VSL performance mirage in the short season leagues as slightly older players with lots of wood bat experience do better than all the new signees thrown into pro ball. But if the performance continues up the ladder then yes, I would begin to think of him as more of a prospect. Hopefully he does not end up a tweener who is not quite good enough defensively for the middle infield but not enough of a hitter for the corners.

So CD I am not sold yet, but more intrigued so far as to his prospect status.

  7. Best idea keep him away from Cholly until he is competely healed. He might play every minute of every game or he might sit on the bench like a teenager at his first dance. Who know the inner working of “Cholly’s BRAIN”.

  8. Domonic Brown is headed to Clearwater to start his rehab tomorrow. That’s going to be one incredibly stacked team for the next few weeks. An outfield of James, Singleton and Brown will be fun to watch. Although I guess maybe with Singleton’s injury he’ll be DH’ing? Wonder if this presages a Joe Savery promotion to Reading, in that case?
