Hi folks. The graphic below the fold is missing the AAA box score, I have to go and won’t have time to upload it. If gregg or Chuck or anyone else with access wants to add it, go for it, I’ve just been using screencaps + mspaint to make the files. Thanks for understanding.

Nice to see Ramirez and Aumont starting and finishing a game together although some K’s would have been nice from J.c.
Savery again lowered his BA by only going 2-3, does he have any K’s on the year???

Savery’s average is dropping like a stone. If he has a 1 for 3, it might go negative. (I guess I better say, kidding!)

So how long do people think that Eric Pettis stays in Lakewood? I think he might get the call before the all-star break. I think he could move fast in the system.
LikeLike
They must have started him there for a reason. He would really have to show improved stuff from the Spring to get a quick promotion. Besides, there’s a bullpen full of guys ahead of him at CLW.
These things tend to sort themselves out and the cream rises to the top. Let’s hope he keeps mowing them down!

Seems like Leandro Castro is off to a nice start w/ 3 homers and .474 BA. Cody Overbeck and Rizzotti are also mashing right now. Then there’s Joe Savery…
Nice outing for Colby Shreve. 9-1 GB/FB ratio with 7K gets the job done. I think there’s an opening for him in the Clearwater rotation now that Colvin is on the shelf…

Where did you see that Colvin is on the shelf? I’ve yet to hear a reason why he was pulled early.

Colvin was DLed due to a back problem. Not as bad as an arm issue, at least usually…

Aumont with a very impressive 2 IP outing. Just the one walk, no wild pitches, and 3 Ks. Good sign from the Big Canuck. While JC Ramirez didn’t record a strikeout, he only allowed 5 baserunners in 7 IP (two of which were XBHs). I know there’s no rush in his case, but I wonder how much longer he sticks in the starting rotation? If he continues to produce like this, I doubt he’ll get moved to the bullpen anytime soon, but I’ve always figured him as a guy whose stuff plays up out of the bullpen. Thoughts?
Singleton continues to show off his tremendous plate discipline with his .478 OBP. The power hasn’t shown up so far this early in the season, but I’ve no doubt it will come. The kid can just flat-out hit and from the little I’ve read he’s holding his own in the OF defensively.
Anybody have any gun readings on Shreve or Pettis from tonight? I don’t really foresee Pettis remaining in Lakewood for much longer, and I think the organization would be well-served by testing him against more seasoned competition in the near future.

Biddle will turn it around next time out, right?
Did anyone mention that Scott Frazier has been activated and is being worked into the starting rotation at Pepperdine?

Is it impossible to visualize Overbeck playing 3rd base in Reading? Certainly our 1st base needs are not an issue for 4-5 more years. OTOH 3rd base is a yawning hole in the system and we know Polanco can’t play there too long for the sake of his long grey beard getting in the way of fielding grounders…in 3 years(?).
The problem I understand is with Overbeck’s mediocre fielding at 3rd base. Right? Is it his arm strength/accuracy or does he lack an ability to pick ’em up?
So, since he could make some hitting noise in ’11 at Reading, why don’t they spend significant time each day sharpening his fielding there? IF his early hitting leads to a season of hitting success with power, how would that benefit the Phils in any way other than a throw in in a trade deal.
IMO, 3rd base should be the aim for him; his value to the Phils is greatly diminished at 1st base.
LikeLike
1B is blocked for a long time in Philadelphia. That’s why Singleton was immediately moved to LF after showing himself to be a can’t miss bat. Anyone stationed at 1B is someone whose only value will be in a trade.
LikeLike
Oh why is first base blocked in Philadelphia for a long time? Is it because their cheap ownership gave out an enormously huge $$$ contract to our home grown first baseman? Wait, let me guess, they should have traded him, replaced him with Savery, spent the money on the draft, but they didn’t do that because they were worried Savery would become the first .800 hitter in baseball history and would have to pay him $30M per season….
LikeLike
Free_AEC’s post was perfectly reasonable. Any Phillies first base prospect that would be ready before 2015 likely has more trade value to the team than anything else. Therefore, Overbeck’s move to 1B diminishes his overall value and basically negates his chances of ever being a Phillie. He simply cited Singleton’s move as an example of the Phils recognition of a block at 1st base within their own system; Singleton is valuable to them and a part of their future plans whereas Overbeck is not. No need to create contention where there isn’t any.

No I’m not– I was the first one to post as “Dave $$ Montgomery.” My point was that that one, of all of his posts, was like the only one that didn’t deserve to be mocked.

Okay – I assume that for everyone except AEC (I assume the ban hammer has now come down on him, given mutiple obnixious posts after PP gave him a final warning), the “Dave $$$ Montgomery” stuff was tongue in cheek. But it was problably his most annoying tic.
You can argue that the Phillies front office priorities are misplaced – i.e., they should arguably funnel some of that payroll to the minor league system – but to argue that such a “mistake” is a result of the organization being cheap is not only without evidence, but flies in the face of the most basic logic. The fact the the team has the second highest payroll in baseball doesn’t prove that they are allocating resources optimally, but it proves rather conclusively that they aren’t cheap.
LikeLike
Exactly. It’s ridiculous to use the lazy ‘cheap’ argument. Money is being spent. The argument should be: Is it wise to spend such a large percentage of the budget on the Major league teams salaries?
So far they haven’t had to adjust because they keep getting good prospects without giving out seven figure bonuses. It’s obvious they don’t believe it’s necessary.

I think Savery would make more than $30 Million if he hit .800 in the Majors

I agree he would be of greater value at 3B, but he’s had his chances there. They probably moved him because they didn’t think he could play 3B over the long-term. I doubt they moved him to make room for Rivero.

They gave him years at 3B…he simply isn’t there defensively.

I think the only reason he was moved was Rivero. Phils have Rivero on the 40 man and want to see what they have. I would not be surprised to see Overbeck move back as the season progresses.

Lakewood’s pitching looks good so far, but only one of their regular position players is even above the Mendoza Line. Collier is a co-leader with three hits in four games.
LikeLike
Looks to me like only one of their regular position players is above the Mendoza line, which would be James Murphy at .214, who many complained about being placed that low and 25 and all.

I don’t remember anyone complaining about James Murphy being sent back to Lakewood. He didn’t do anything at Clearwater, so there was no basis for complaint. On Blueclaws blog, he said he was thankful the Phillies let him play for Lakewood.
LikeLike
What was meant they complained about him being kept around at all, and guys like Dugan, C. Duffy, et al. being kept in XST. And they have complained about that, and they still are.
LikeLike
Yes. Am still complaining. Murphy has no future with the Phillies, Dugan does. Only purpose Murphy can serve is if he is raking he is providing opportunities for other players to see pitches and to promote a winning atmosphere. Through 4 games, Lakewood’s offense is putrid. So the fact that he is the high water mark at .214 with a homer doesn’t seem to be much to hang a hat on. Meanwhile the 20 year old best hitter from minor league spring training is playing scrimmages in Florida. If they are holding him back to work on a specific element of defense I can understand but nobody really knows if that’s the case or not.
LikeLike
I suspect its the case. When I saw Dugan last year his bat looked good but he looked lost on the basepaths. Probably putting work in on fundamentals.

Mathieson is still in his sent to the minors funk. Zagurski bailed him out. Bass, Ramirez and Shreve got the job done. Lakewood’s batting averages are skewed by that extra inning game the other day. Altherr was 0 for 7. This early in the season, that can kill your batting average. Even mid-season that will deflate the average quite a bit.
Has anyone seen Cesar Hernandez in a CLW game? Is he overmatched? Is he pressing? I’d hate to see his confidence shattered because they pushed him a little too hard and fast. I’d hate to see him become the next Galvis. Freddy was pushed a little too fast or maybe a lot too fast.
LikeLike
Until the game of yesterday, many of the players, including Altherr , were o-for -the season, even if the extra inning game is taken out of it. Maybe a run of good pitching by opposition, maybe the weather heats up and they bat better. Or maybe there’s trouble a brewin’, maybe the 9 primo OF candidates for Lakewood and where can they ever fit them all, may have been blue skying.

Cesar has really struggled at the bat and in the field. Last night listening to the game in addition to striking out three times he was late covering second on a fielder’s choice ground ball which eventually set up a two out, three run Burgess home run to win the game for the D-Cubs.
LikeLike
In watched Hernandez play 4 games and in only one did he actually hit the ball hard (game 3 when he hit 2 really nice line drives). So if I had to say what his problem is right now I’d say he’s overmatched, but it’s early and maybe he’ll come around after a few weeks.

Savery is unreal with his bat right now, if he is still above .500 a month into the season the phillies will have no choice but to move him to AA. Again this small sample size could be getting the better of me but he did hit over 300 in his small AAA sample last year…we should have a post about if what we are seeing is real or not and why…I’m curious as to what everyone thinks.

I think Savery needs to work on playing left field. Problem is they have Singleton doing that so can they move Savery up and teach him a new position? I guess time will tell.

Also, forgot to add this, with Singleton gimpy as of last night, there is a temp opening in LF if they wanted to try it. I doubt they will though.

Not real. Nobody is this good a hitter. He’s gotten off to a hot start and that’s great but he could very easily go 0-12 in his next 3 starts. Of course, if he did so, he’d still be batting .467 on the year.

Parent has already praised Overbeck’s play at first. If he continues to lead the Eastern League in batting average, OPS and homers they just might give him a chance to play First and DH at AAA sometime this season clearing a spot for Savery at AA. Savery has only pitched for about 5 years so having him hit and play first and DH is all I would expect this year. If he hits well and adjusts to playing every day, they might try him in the outfield in the instructional league but not before. Its still very early obviously but its not too hard to imagine Dugan going to L Wood, Murphy to C Water, Savery to Reading, and Overbeck or Rizz to LHV. Releasing Larish isn’t all that unlikely since they still have Bozied there too, currently on the DL. As for the comments about Overbeck playing 3B, he just can’t play it well enough to play it in the majors. We’ve discussed that on here for a long time. However, I’m not ready to write off his bat. He and Rizz might be in a battle to see who goes up first. The Lakewood hitting woes continue but Cesar Hernandez’s difficulties worry be more because he seems totally overmatched early on. I was very encouraged by Shreve and JC’s first starts. We all want to see both become more of a K pitcher and both did well.
LikeLike
I completely agree on Savery. Keep his bat going this season over the long haul in the comfort and watchful eye of the Florida folks. (Obviously if he is hitting over .450 by midseason, maybe a callup is necessary.)
Hernandez may get a month at CLW before being ‘traded’ for Barnes. It happened to Santana (who still looks terrible) but with Hernandez on the 40-man he may not make it to the majors in Philly’s control if he goes backwards.

For those who are wishing for middle infielders and follow the mock drafts: Draftsite.com has the Phillies selecting 2 Shortstops in their first 3 picks, in the latest update. 1st round #39, Javier Baez HS Florida, 2nd round #91, Julius Gaines. HS Georgia. I could get behind that. I know it would make ArtD happy.

That would be different than our normal strategy of focusing on SS out of Latin America instead. Most drafted SS dont stay at the position.
That said, I too wouldn’t mind a focus on up the middle positions.

What makes this scenario plausible this year, is there are a lot more Shortstops projected to go in the late 1st early 2nd. The good ones are usually gone in the 1st round. Anyway, Baez is projected to outgrow SS and play 3rd. And I doubt Gaines would still be available at 91 since he is projected as a plus fielder.
