I wanted to start a new discussion repository, so this is it. Talk about whatever you’d like. I’m currently working on my preliminary top 30, because I’m again putting together a Top 30 list for the Maple Street Press Phillies annual thing. Which got me to thinking. So we’ll have a poll, related to the Reader Top 30. Last year we started late and voted up through spring training. We can do that again this year, or we can start earlier, like after Thanksgiving, and then wrap things up after Christmas. I have no preference, I just run the thing, so its your call. Vote, and also express your opinion one way or another. I won’t necessarily just decide based on the vote totals (unless its completely lopsided), I want to hear rationale as well. Thanks.

I say mid-December. Wait until after the winter meetings so we don’t run into likely trades, and that also clears the Rule 5 draft.

I feel like after thanksgiving the season is still pretty fresh in people’s mind and it protects from run away conversations about what the big club is doing with free-agents. The big club is great to talk about but it is not what draws me to this site, so I’m for content that keeps the focus on the young fellas.

last year it got really rushed as we got closer to ST, so I vote for Nov.

The sooner we can talk baseball through the off-season, the better.
Speculations provide the timber for the hot stove to get us through the cold time when we can’t see games.

After Rule 5 would be a good time to start. I don’t see the Phils trading prospects this winter. Doing one slot every two days would get us done by early/mid-February, just in time for spring training.

I say November, season is still fresh in our mids, AFL is winding down and the DRL, PRL, etc are still prevalent. We will be too amped for Spring Training if we wait.

Sooner the better. Give us something to talk about this off season. Otherwise we’ll just harp on free agent signings, contracts, age of the roster, should KK be #5 etc. If we start after thanksgiving that should get us to around spring training and then we can talk about who’s invited and who isn’t.
Good to keep the site focused on prospect talk.

Sooner – things are slower right now, and there’s too much Major League Talk. Plus, I’d rather the list be done well before Spring Training

I voted for November, but like the idea of waiting until after the winter meetings and going that route. Also, can we just start voting on #2 because 99% of the vote will be for Brown. 🙂

James:
I have an idea. It has two parts.
Why don’t we start the readers list early – right after Thanksgiving or in early December. As in past years, it makes sense to do this from the top prospect on down to number 30. If you do this each weekday, it will take 6 weeks.
Then, instead of giving birth to a gigantic top 30 list, if you are able to do it, why don’t you do your list in reverse order, releasing a name each weekday which also would take 6 weeks. You could start in mid-January. That way, we could focus on one prospect at a time and we could strech this whole thing out until right before Spring Training games begin. Just a thought, but, of course, it’s completely your call.

Catch22 has a good idea above.
The sooner the better for me, in general.

I wouldn’t mind waiting until january, with the winter meetings and free agency pending those 2 things can really affect our prospects, plus if its later it will get us through until the spring training games start.

I like Catch22 idea, but doing 1 every day may be asking too much… if not, I do like the idea.
Just another thought, maybe instead of 1 per day, a list of 5 once per week to discuss as we want, that discussion would easily last a week and make it easier to run… example Monday, Nov 22.. top 26-30 for the week…. Nov 29th: 21-25, etc. I agree the sooner the better…

I said December because it is after the winter meetings and Rule 5, and it gets us talking baseball again soon. I know we might know more in February like last year, but what do we know anyway. It’s all opinion!

Earlier the better. This hot stove season is really boring. To wit: I just read a blog item about Mickey Morandini returning in a coaching role. I’m desperate here, folks.

I vote for Dec. after the winter meetings & rule 5 draft. I liked catch 22’s idea as well. Make it last till pitchers & catchers.

Voted for sooner rather than later which seems to be the consensus. Either way, though, is all right by me.

I like the idea of right after the winter meetings in early December

Start it early. More baseball to discuss over the winter is always a good thing.

Since it’s quite possible that Trades and the Rule 5 Draft could alter the lists, it is likely best to wait.

`Lets start early and cancel the winter meetings. This period is like waiting in the dentist office. You know something bad will happen.
Maybe some of the guys that are familiar with latin america can start with a list of those younger players with a profile to educate the rest.

At least we know we can skip #1 and just cede it to Dom.

Start early and wait till FAs and R5s are cleared are both good ideas. Let’s do ASAP after some key deadlines have been cleared.

The Brisbane Bandits open the new ABL season on Thursday with several Phillies prospects on its roster including recently signed 18 year old righthanded pitcher Josh Warner described as having a ” really easy fluent” motion and super sub infielder Alan Schoenberger who played a key role at SS in Lakewood’s championship series back in Sept. Clearwater Thresher coach Kevin Jordan is listed as one of the Bandits coaches. Drew Naylor is listed as a pitcher on the Bandits roster but appears to be inactive at this time. Once on the Phils 40 man roster Joel Naughton is one of the Bandits catchers but he is now listed as a six year minor league free agent on the recently released Baseball America’s list

Bill James 2011 MLB projections for Dom Brown are .288/.346/.505 with 26 HRs and 28 SBs in almost 600 plate appearances. Jayson who?

I always found the projections in that Handbook for rookies ludicrously optimistic, Ryan Howard nonewithstanding.

So he’s going to basically match his AA-ball peformance 2010 in the majors in 2011? I think Dom Brown will have a nice career but those projections are ridiculous.
Jason Heyward was an all-star as a rookie last season and he was .277/.393/.456 with 18 hrs. Does anyone really expect Dom Brown to have a better rookie season? Might as well give him the ROY now and save the wait…

I don’t think that line is better than Heyward’s. That OBP gap is huge, and that really makes Heyward the player he is.

I guess I should’ve been more clear. I’m not saying that I believe those projections. In fact, I’ll bet my mortgage on the under. Just thought it was interesting conversation.

Please start by clarifying who is and who is not eligible among the of the guys who been called up before, including Brown, Mayberry, Bastardo, Matheison, Zagurski, Escalona, Worley, and Carpenter. I agree with Alan’s post-winter meetings mid-December idea.

My personal preference is to follow Baseball America’s criteria for rookies. 150 plate appearances for batters, 50 IP for pitchers. All of the players ken45 listed are below that threshhold, so I consider them all eligible. The one player who cleared the rookie threshhold is David Herndon.

Mathieson is also not considered a rookie by MLB standards due to the number of days he has spent on the 25-man roster over the years.
