Lots of news today including Reading pitchers Vance Worley and Michael Schwimer being named to the Eastern League All Star team. Worley, 22, was named to the team for the second consecutive year and is 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA in his 15 starts. In 83.2 innings, he has allowed 92 hits, walked 32 and struck out 62. Schwimer, 24, is 5-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 29 appearances. He has 8 saves. In his 36 innings of work, he has allowed 33 hits, walked 14 and struck out an impressive 50 batters.
Two Reading hitters were named to the team as well. 24 year old Matt Rizzotti, hitting .378 for Reading with 10 HR and 35 RBI in just 148 at bats, will represent Reading along with 1B Tagg Bozied. Bozied is hitting .295 with 13HR and 55 RBI in his 224 AB’s.
Congratulations to Mike.
Bet your autograph value will be going up sharply in the next 12 months!

I think it all goes according to which roster you’re on when the selections are made. In similar fashion, Thompson was arguably having another all-star season at AAA but got dumped on by the guys upstairs……..strange move in my book.

Congratulations to them all on the All Star honor. Enjoyed Schwimer racking up strike outs over the weekend in Harrisburg when the stadium speed gun board registered 93 and his breaking ball was nipping the outside corner of the plate. But when the speed gun board said 89 it was a different story.

Rizzo is proving that Drabek is not ready for prime time and he is by taking him deep tonight for a three run homer.

Rizz DHd for the second game in a row. I guess the Phillies have no intention of trying to develop him for the home team. Why do they have to trade every player that we get excited about? I guess Garcia (the infielder) will have to go if he keeps hitting the way he is.

box score says riz is dh’ing but seltzer keeps calling plays mentioning riz at 1st. weird!

Best thing about Rizzotti hitting this way is that the Phillies have fallen into an unexpected asset. If trading Rizzotti saves the team from trading a decent arm or allows them to let a Gose or James ripen up before trading, then that’s found money.

Plain and simple, Rizzotti is blocked. He could be all world in the minors but he’s not going to play when Ryan Howard is there. However, he could fetch a nice bench player for the Phils or another position prospect .

riz is playing 1st tonight, not mahar. they changed the box score to reflect this, must hvae been a typo.

Seltzer is one of the hammiest broadcasters out there. He’s perfect for minor league baseball.

Rickey Branch
The Riz worked his magic on Drabek’s formerly good ERA
but he also hammered the Washington pitcher who was just called up. He is an equal opportunity monster.
Good luck to all the young guys.

Good for Schwim. I hope he posts here again despite the ridiculous amount of crap he was given for being honest in his last entry.
I really hope we cash in on Rizzotti’s current hot streak.

NEPP, I respect your opinion a lot so I figure I’ll pose the question to you. Keith Law tweeted the other day that Rizzotti has little trade value. What do you think his trade value could be? A prospect for prospect type deal or could he, as part of a bigger deal, net us something of good value?

Rizzotti is a decent throw in in a deal with an AL club. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on the radar of AL teams as a guy to get in a trade with the Phils. Not THE guy to get in a deal, but a guy to take a chance on.

Of course Rizzotti has no trade value. This is the first true hit streak of his career. How is a buyer to know if this is real or just a hot streak? As a team, I wouldn’t give up anything of substance for a guy with the minimal track record as Rizzotti.
Think about it, we on here would flip out at the Phillies if they traded a tangible asset for a guy on an incredible hot streak with his prior track record.

Rizzotti is exactly the kind of guy teams ask to get thrown into a deal. I could see a Matheson and Rizzotti for Wigginton (or Pero Feliz) deal. To get a pitcher like Guthrie might cost us slightly better prospects like Galvis and Worley. Its always tough this time of the year because i hate seeing guys I’ve followed get traded even if I know it helps the big club now.

I think that is very reasonable Murray. Those assets aren’t going to get us a premium bat or a starter, but could get us a bench guy as you mention

Does Mathieson or Shwimer have what it takes to be a closer in the majors? Lidge is certain to be gone after 2011.

If Philly was willing to take on the salary of Wigginton or Feliz they could get them for next to nothing. If Baltimore , Houston, etc. absorbed some salary , then, yeah, I could see Mathieson, and Rizzotti as an offer. Kansas City could use a DH if they ever get free of Jose Guillen and they might take on Rizzotti- he might have a chance to work out better than Mike Jacobs did. Looking over the available IF lists the media is putting out lately, I might like them to get from Kansas City Mike Aviles and/or Willie Bloomquist as Middle Infield options with Bloomquist also playing all OF positions, and maybe they take back Bocock as a Middle Infield reserve in addition to the Mathieson , Rizzotti thing. Yeah, there’s a trade.

I read an article last night that saidthe phils didn’t have enough prospects to re-acquire cliff lee. That was frustrating in at least 2 levels; first why didn’t we cash in on this valuable commodity and 2nd either lee is going to command multiple top tier prospects or our system isn’t as strong as we think it is. I’m hoping cosart and Brown were assumed untouchable. Still 4 of- May, Valle, singleton, colvin, rizzotti, Aumont, gillies ,JC ramirez,Gose, santana plus kendrick or Happ wouldn’t get it done? I would think hard about giving up their choice of 4 of this list plus Happ and I miss Lee as much as anybody and believe we could win it all with him in our rotation.

Lee is not coming here unless Werth is signed. That ship has sailed.
Will Schwim get called up to AAA in the next week or so? If he could get a little work in he could be an option when rosters expand.

As to the question of possible future closers at the big league level, I don’t think Schwim is (doesn’t throw hard enough) and I’m not sure about Matheson (his ball is too striaght). The guy I look at as a possible future closer is DeFratus. He throws hard and has very good control and I’d like to see him get promoted to AA. I’m also not sure about where Sanchez will fit in (starter or pen) but I continue to believe he has a major league arm. I’m expecting quite a few July promotions (Way, Angelle, Schwimmer, DeFratus, and Zeid). I’m sure Madsen will be back in the next two days, and I assume Happ will stay at LHV for awhile, so someone will be sent down (Zagurski?) to AAA.

By himself, I dont see Rizzotti as having any real trade value. As a throw-in (as a few others have mentioned), he does.

@Murray…they are going to have to clear room on the 40-man roster when Madsen comes back, so I’m guessing Figgy gets DFA’d to make room. They’ll likely keep Zagurski for the time being.

If DeFratus is that good, he needs to get promoted to AA this season. We need to know what we have before Lidge leaves.
