  1. Reading – Another quality start by Worley, and it was better than the first glance indicates considering the 3 runs he gave up were unearned. The 9K’s in 6 innings and 1 walk indicates he had great command. Really good to see him turn things around – based on his turnaround I still think he’s a 4th-5th starter prospect. Interesting that Gillies still isn’t playing, I thought he came off the DL? I understand that Berry has been playing better of late and the org might want to play him a lot to use him a a PR callup in September, but couldn’t they play Gillies in LF instead of Mahar?

    Lakewood – Have to agree with PP in that Valle has been playing great as of late. I’ll admit, I was concerned earlier in the year, but he seems to have righted the ship. It seems as though the org might want to keep these guys together for the year, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him get his feet wet in Clearwater in Aug if he continues to play at this clip. Way’s a bit old for this level as well, and I’d like to see him move up to Clearwater as well.

    Clearwater – Nothing really to comment on here, outside of Gose, a pretty boring team.

    LHV – Nice night for Mayberry, is he still even a prospect at this point? Another year or two in the minors and he’ll just be org filler, if he isn’t already. Looks like Zag’s will get the closing nod with the Mathison call-up. While I love the Mathison call up, it’s interesting they didn’t give the callup to Zag’s, who is also pitching well, and is left handed.

  2. Clearwater is a little more interesting than Reading for me. Ramirez, May, Harold Garcia in addition to Gose, give a few names to follow.

  3. I think they might just be going to bring Gillies back slowly. There’s nothing concerning Berry being thought of later in the season being called up. They just want to take their time with Gillies, rather than to run him out there in back-to-back games, and chancing an injury again.
    Yes, Mayberry would still be a prospect. He would most likely get a call if the big club lost an outfielder.

  4. Snakeman – I guess I should have qualified my statement – Yes, I believe he can play in the big leagues, just like how 75% of guys in AAA have the ability to play in the big leagues in some capacity. I just don’t think he’s anything worth getting excited about anymore.

  5. Reading – that’s 2 days off in a row for Gillies after coming off the disabled list.

    Hewitt- last 2 games 4 for 8 with 0 strikeouts.

    Williamsport opens season tonight against State College Spikes Julio Rodriguez against Zach VonRosenbourg. Be there.

  6. I am still trying to figure out what to make of Valle. The hot streaks suggest to me that the underlying high-levell ability is there. What I don’t like is poor plate discipline. I also have little idea of his skills as a receiver.

    On Hewitt, I’m not getting excited until I see that he can do this for a couple of months straight. He and James may be world beater athletes, but they are pretty old for this level – at least James has an excuse, having just started as a full-time position player last year.

  7. Valle has 7 PBs and 4 Errors behind the plate. It would be interesting to know if there are a lot more wild pitches when he’s behind the plate. He’s not a great receiver but Mark Parent was a catcher and can help him. If Valle moves up, he’ll have another catcher for a Manager (Wathan). Roadcap was also a catcher by trade as was Dave Huppert at AAA. He’ll get plenty of instruction as he moves along.

  8. Pretty old for the level? They are both 21. They are 1 year older than the ideal age for the level. They both are younger than the college guys who play at that level. They should be college juniors. If you want to argue their performance, you have a point.

  9. I give James a pass because he changed positions. But, they are not going particularly fast and any further delays (like spending two years at one level going forward) will definitely put them behind the curve. Even going one level a year, would make them 25 when they hit the majors – I look at that as being at the very latest that good hitting prospects tend to be called up. There are very few guys who become really good position players who are first promoted at age 26 or older.

    Sure, one or both of them could take off and still make the majors at age 23 or 24, but they’re not on that pace now, even with their recent successes.

  10. Sorry if I missed a discussion of this here yesterday, but there was some love for Jonathan Singleton in BA’s most recent “Helium Watch”:

    Philadelphia Phillies: Jonathan Singleton, 1b, low Class A Lakewood
    Shortstop Jonathan Villar has boosted his stock with his play at the plate and in the field, but it’s another Jonathan on Lakewood who’s caught scouts’ attention. In 33 games, Singleton is hitting a no-that’s-not-a-typo .392/.483/.675 with seven home runs, 21 walks and 24 strikeouts. Singleton signed for $200,000 last year as an eighth-round pick out of high school, money that’s looking like a steal for a player who has quickly become one of the best first-base prospects in the minors.

  11. Maybe we can call second base ,first base too and third also.
    What a load of talent at one position. Even Ruz is not embarrassing himself.

  13. Valle is throwing out runners well. Two guys go on base in late inning the other night and tried to steal 2B in a close game. He nailed them both. End of inning. He is raw in other areas, but at least shows talent there. A motivated, dedicated guy with decent agility can learn the catcher’s trade, but we shall see. As a C, his bat is nice. As a LF, more ordinary.

  14. Jim (Tampa): How would you rank Freddie Freeman, Jonathan Singleton and Eric Hosmer, long term?

    J.J. Cooper: I’ll go Freeman, Hosmer, Singleton, but there isn’t a whole lot of distance between No. 1 and No. 3 there. The main edge to me for Freeman is that he’s managed to make it to Triple-A at the same age that Hosmer is raking in high Class A. Hosmer is obviously having a better season, but the tools are pretty similar and it’s hard to say that Hosmer would be having a better year than Freeman if he was playing in the International League right now. Singleton has showed plus tools as well, but we’re still talking about a guy with less than 100 games in the minors right now. There are a lot of reasons to be excited, but he’s still a ways away.

  15. @Tom I’m not sure what PP’s policy on premium content is, but I think reposting one paragraph is well within the bounds of the fair use doctrine, and thus not illegal.

    But thanks for the law lesson!

  19. About Hewitt, I think it’s fair to be disappointed with the pick, but being really disappointed with Hewitt himself is a little unfair. We all knew that he was a project and probably a one-level-at-a-time guy. It would be great if a lightswitch had come on by now and he was raking in Clearwater, but realistically we knew that was unlikely. His progress was bound to be slow, coming from an area that isn’t a baseball hotbed, and he has plenty of things to work on before he gets many results on the field. He’s probably right about where the Phillies were hoping, or at least not too far behind it.

  24. Tom — I appreciate a good scolding as much as the next former Catholic school boy, but let me make a few quick points:

    (1) as Alexander Cleveland Alexander points out, the fair use doctrine allows for copying, reposting or republishing excerpts of copyrighted work; the rule of thumb for those exceprts is 250 words; the one I posted was around 100 words;

    (2) the fact that the excerpt was from “premium content” has no bearing on the legality of reposting it; PP has the same claim to copyright protection for this site and the free content he creates for it as BA does for the content it puts behind its pay wall;

    (3) while it is neighborly and decent of PP to insist that we not repost material here simply as a way to circumvent pay walls, I don’t think his intention is to prevent us from speaking of or making reference to any and all premium material from other sites (nor do I think BA would like that outcome; having people ignore their premium content is no way to generate interest in it);

    (4) to recap, first you accused me of breaking the law and then you learned a little bit about that law; maybe next time you should do the learning before the accusing.
