  1. actually, a very interesting line for all 4 pitchers. i think that it is a real plus that he got to be around a few pros. nice start to a career for him.

  4. Cosart’s numbers are pretty impressive this year – 12 hits allowed and 25ks in 24 innings. That probably means he’s just blowing the ball by everyone. That 2008 draft keeps looking better and better.

  5. Also a side foot note to this is that Clay Condrey started (1 inning) Colvin 2 innings, Cosart 5 innings , and Bastardo 1 inning. Maybe some short term movements are foreshown.

  6. This seems to late starting on the comeback trail for Bastardo to be an impact with Phillies this year. Likely same for Condrey, although he has a better chance.

  7. So what happens with Bastardo next year? Does he replace Eyre in the bullpen? Or is he a started in LHV? I would think that Savery, Drabek, Stutes & Worley are going to take four of the spots in the LHV rotation. Where does that put Bastardo, Carpenter and Kendrick? What about Lopez & Chacin?

    What? I don’t see that at all. Lopez will be gone. He’ll cling to another team that has a battel for 5th starter.

    Carpenter/Kendrick/Savery will probably all be in AAA barring a trade.

  13. Worley will be starting at AA and perhaps maybe even Stutes. Both those guys bypassed Clearwater so they are technically ahead of the curve. The AAA rotation should be Bastardo, Savery, Carpenter, Kendrick, Drabek/Chacin. The 2010 rotation locks are Hamels, Lee, Blanton, Happ. Moyer has 1 year left but he’ll battle it out with Kendrick, Carpenter, Chacin for the 5th starter job.

  15. After someone mentioned the 2008 draft it reminded me of Colby Shreve. I just went and looked and see he’s on the Williamsport roster. Anyone have any info on him? Is he going to pitch at all this year? On the site I saw he’s listed on the “7 day disabled list” – odd since he hasn’t pitched since he’s been drafted, post Tommy John surgery.

  16. someone said yesterday that shreve pitched a simulated game the other day and is starting to work. As the minor league season is winding down, i doubt he will see much time with the team, but expect to see him throwing in the instructional league this fall.

  23. Schwimer’s pitched the top of the 9th in a tie second game of the twin bill. He just struck out the side. Can he win both ends of the doubleheader in his AA debut?

  24. Is “The Schwim” a good major league nickname? Or is that too cheesy – as in something that Chris Berman would come up with in some preprepared hotddogging line?

    Because I think Schwimer is putting himself in a position to battle for a bullpen slot in spring training with the Arizona Fall League and probably get in line for call-ups during next season – we’re all pulling for him to stick when he gets his chance at The Show.

    Meanwhile, great move to be careful with Drabek.

  25. Colvin will be the next guy to watch when Drabek bulls his way into the 5th starter spot in ST. He will take PedroMoyer’s rotation spot at some point in the season.

  27. No way Stutes and Worley start in Reading again next season. They are going to be relievers in the majors when they get there. My estimate for Stutes is anytime after june 2010 and Worley 2011. They are both hard throwers not conducive to starting, but relieving.

  28. People who want to write in Chacin into next season’s Philly organization are presuming alot. He came in as a minor league free agent this season, so I doubt he would be on more than a one year deal. So I got to believe he will again be a minor league free agent, and if he wants to go back to MLB again, he will more likely go where there is less pitching competition.

    Schwimer wins both ends of double header in Reading. In the second game seems he was stronger than the 1st. In his inning he had 3 strikeouts, and the only flaw on his day, a walk. So in the 2nd game nobody laid a glove on him.
    Agree with what was said above, with progress in the Arizona Fall League, a threat for MLB bullpen next season.

    DeFratus got 4 outs yesterday(?) and was removed. Any injury news on that, perhaps.

    Austin Hyatt 11 strikeouts in 7 innings. 8 strikeouts in first 9 outs. ERA 0.74 like that. Strikeouts to innings pitched up there. Pitchers coming out of college in the draft have traditionally been assigned to Class A Short Season. So he’s right where he should be, and the organization will determine where his placement is next season. I don’t see any other college pitchers out of the draft doing as much in Class A Short Season.

    Next seasons AAA pitching rotation should prominently feature this season’s AA rotation members plus Savery. Kendrick and Carpenter can compete for a long relief spot in MLB, but I would favor the Arizona Fall League pitchers over them in that role. If they need a 5th starter , Moyer features a similar array of stuff to these 2 , and has more experience at it, so perhaps a better chance to make it work. Perhaps these 2 can be swapped for some lower light prospects to fill some possible openings at the AAA fielding positions, such as 2B and/or SS, and Catcher.

  29. Tightness in the side/back for De Fratus. Nothing serious. Taken out for precaution. From what I can gather, he’s heading back to the bullpen for the playoffs and is likely to be staying there long-term.

  32. Unless the sky falls nest years team will be best AAA starters and for that matter pitching staff since I can remember and that is a long time. I gotta research that.

  33. Hyatt was a starter in college and for most of this year at W’port was basically a “piggyback” starter, usually pitching 3 innings at a time. Switching to the rotation was not a problem for him for good reason. The real issue there is that he’s 23. Hopefully he’ll get a double-bump to Clearwater next year to see if he’s a prospect or not. Even then he’d be a little old to be a real prospect.

    Drew, thanks for the info on DeFratus. Can you talk some sense into whoever it is that wants to make DeFratus a reliever next season? Let him continue to be an awesome starter (alright, it’s only been 7 starts, but he’s been REALLY GOOD) until he can’t anymore.

    Austin Hyatt, RHP, Phillies (Short-season Williamsport)
    Thursday’s stats: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
    A 15th-round pick in June out of Alabama, Hyatt was one of those cheap senior signs who throws strikes, has a good changeup, and is a solid organization arm. The shocker here is that his fastball is suddenly up to 94 and he’s been the New York-Penn League’s most dominating arm, allowing just one run in 31 2/3 innings while compiling a 49/5 K/BB ratio and giving up just 14 hits. At 23, he needs to move quickly and is probably no more than a reliever in the end, but he’s certainly more than just a solid organizational arm.

  35. Worley has had a rough 2nd half of the season. I saw him pitch at New Britain recently and he was so-so. I doubt he start 2010 @ AAA. On a side note, how about Savery being named the LH starter for the Eastern league All-star team. He had a great record but the rest of his stats don’t scream all-star to me.

  36. Okay, time to give credit where credit is due. In the last two years, the Phils have picked up Hyatt, Schwimer, Rosenberg, and Stutes after the 10th round. That is quality drafting my friends . . . just super stuff.
