Oh, so there were minor league games played, even on deadline day, I guess we should talk about those as well. Invariably the question of where Colvin goes and when will come up. I wouldn’t expect to see him in the box scores the rest of this week, and maybe not next week either. He’ll surely report to the GCL squad sometime next week, and the Phillies could give him an inning or two before the season ends, so the GCL box scores are the ones to watch. My guess is that he’ll start in Lakewood next year, which is where he belongs. Now, onto the games…
AAA: Lehigh Valley lost 9-4.
* Taylor did not play, as gregg pointed out he’s day to day with a minor oblique strain. Nothing to be concerned about
* Mayberry was 0/5 with 3 K
AA: Reading was off
A+: Clearwater won 5-1.
* Mike Durant was 1/4 with a HR (11)….I remember when some thought he’d be a potential 1B of the future…
* Joel Naughton was 1/4, his line now a disappointing .226/.286/.350
* Our main man Schwimer came in and put out the fire for his 17th save of the season
A: Lakewood lost 4-1.
* Travis D’Arnaud went 0/4 and is now just 1/15 in his last 4 games with 2 BB
* Heitor Correa went 6 IP, giving up 2 ER on 6 H and 2 BB while striking out only 1
* Jacob Diekman pitched 2 clean innings in relief, striking out 3. His ERA as a reliever; 3.05. As a starter, its a painful 9.82 in 2 starts. I think hes settled in nicely in his current role.
SS: Williamsport was off
RK: GCL Phillies lost 3-2.
* 3rd rounder Kyrell Hudson made his pro debut, going 0/4 with 1 K
* Jon Singleton went 0/4 with a BB. Early returns still positive here (.318/.395/.470 in 66 AB)
* Domingo Santana went 1/2 with 2 BB. His K totals for the season (36 in 95 AB) are still high, but in his last 30 AB he’s walked 5 times to only 6 K. I consider that progress. By the way, he just turned 17 less than 2 weeks ago
* 32nd round pick Kevin Angelle went 5 scoreless, allowing 2 H and 3 BB to go with 5 K. His 1.66 ERA in 48 IP is nice, but he is 21, his number should actually be even better, if you can imagine that. I only mention this because I saw someone ask about him in another post. You can’t get too excited over 21+ year olds until you see what they do in High A at least
* Julian Sampson’s nightmare 2009 took a one day vacation, as he pitched 1 clean inning in relief.
the odd split of the day;
Joel Naughton’s Home/Away splits
Home: .261/.306/.432 in 111 AB
Away: .197/.270/.280 in 132 AB
How about Mattair’s splits:
Home: .212/.306/.318 in 198 ABs 63K to 23 BBs
Away: .279/.377/.374 in 190 ABs 47K to 29 BBs
Whereas Naughton seems to like the home cooking, Mattair’s not enjoying it at all. If Mattair was batting anywhere close to his away splits overall, I’d be a lot more excited about him. I’ve always liked him but this year’s performance, at the same level as last year, is disappointing.

It’s less than 200 plate appearances apiece and his power numbers are about the same both ways. There’s nothing there to get worked up about really.

What kind of outfielder/player does santana project to be? What are his tools? Is he big/fast?

Not that I’m biased as he’s a contributor here, but what does Schwimer have to do to get promoted? He’s clearly dominating as a closer in Single A+…and considering he’s 23, why not move him to Reading? Why’d they jump Rosenberg over him? Schwim’s peripherals are really solid…especially his K/9 and K/BB ratios.

He’s 6’5″, 200 lbs, and projects as a rightfielder with a plus arm and plus power. He turned 17 in early August, so if his age can be relied on, he has a lot of time to develop.

So, is the Julian Sampson experiment as a starter over? He’s probably fallen farther than any other prospect this year, and he wasn’t exactly coming off a great season in 08 either. Still only 20, but the results have just been painful.

NEPP, Rosenberg’s stats were better than Schwimer’s, although they were compiled at Low A. Hid ERA was 0.89 (Schwimer’s is over 3), his WIP under 1 and he walked fewer batters. He has only pitched 4.1 innings so far at AA but his ERA is 0.00 so far. He is also a few months older than Schwimer. Overall, the move made sense, even though Rosenberg does not a write a blot for this website.

Schwimer is solid. Rosenberg has been phenomenal.

Kyrell Hudson with 2 walks today, it took Hewitt 3 weeks to get 2 walks last year. He intrigues me, a lot of people kinda wrote him off as Hewitt 2.0 after he was picked.

I also know Cosart thru 5 scorless inning last week as well. Numbers have improved since getting some innings and 1st game jitters.

Kyle Slate was released by the Phils today. Apparently could not get healthy enough to pitch. Local guy has a career K/BB ratio of 11:1. Sad story if he can’t make it back.

I didn’t mean one or the other…both could have gone up to Reading with no issues. Schwim could have been a setup guy. I wasn’t trying to imply that Rosenberg wasn’t deserving in any way whatsoever…just that both are having pretty good years as closers.

Over to the DSL for a minute. Daniel De La Cruz, a 19 year old righty, threw a no hitter yesterday against a team that’s 20 games over .500. Valenzuela had an error and Daniel hit 2 batters, so no perfect game. He struck out 12. In his last 35 innings pitched, he’s given up 1 ER. He has an ERA of 1.03 and the DSL is hitting .181 against him. This in the 2nd no hitter (sort of) for the DSL team. Felix Cespedes had a 9 inning “perfect” no hitter earlier in the season, where the game was lost in the 12th.

Yeah, and now DeLaCruz, who had mostly been the 5th starter, has moved into leadership of the WHIP thing with 0.97. I would say 5 starters might be going to the states from the Dominican next spring training.
