8/14/09–Michael Taylor and Andy Tracy continued carrying the Lehigh Valley offense as they opened a series in Buffalo with a 12-6 win. A four run first inning was highlighted by an RBI Single by Mike Cervenak, RBI double by Andy Tracy, and RBI single by Taylor. The ‘Pigs added another run in the 3rd on another RBI single by Michael Taylor. After Buffalo cut the lead to 5-3, the ‘Pigs added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth (Mayberry, 9th homer), and four in the sixth (Taylor (5) solo homer, and Tracy(20) 3 run homer), making the lead 12-5 and putting the game finally out of reach. Rodrigo Lopez (6-4) made his first start since returning from the Phils and was not sharp, going 5 innings and giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 11 hits. Jake Woods continued doing whatever the club asked of him, pitching 4 innings in relief to earn his 2nd save. Rich Thompson was 2-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bases (21,22), while both Andy Tracy and Michael Taylor had multi hit games as well.
8/15/09–An uncharacteristic rough outing for Drew Carpenter in the Lehigh Valley 7-5 loss on Saturday evening. Carpenter (9-4) went 6 innings giving up 7 runs on 11 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 5. Buffalo took a 3-0 lead off of Carpenter in the third but the ‘Pigs bounced right back to tie the game with a three run fourth. A Paul Hoover RBI single and a Sac Fly by Michael Taylor were the key hits for the ‘Pigs. Buffalo jumped on Carpenter again in the 5th, scoring 4 runs on 2 singles and 2 homers, giving then a lead they didnt surrender. The ‘Pigs did make it close in the ninth on a two run triple by JJ Furmaniak. Paul Hoover was 2-4 with an RBI for Lehigh Valley.
8/16/09–The end to a disappointing weekend with a 3-0 shutout loss to last place Buffalo. Kyle Kendrick started and was knocked out after four innings, having given up 3 runs (1 earned on 6 hits). He didn’t walk a batter and struck out 1. The ‘Pigs really only had two good chances to score, once in the second inning when Tuffy Gosewisch was thrown out at home and in the sixth when they left the bases loaded after a Terry Tiffee ground out. Rich Thompson was the lone ‘Pig notable offensively with 2 hits.
Transactions: Catchers Tuffy Gosewisch and Kevin Nelson traded places on Friday with the recall of Gosewisch to Lehigh Valley, and Nelson being sent back down to Reading. Nelson hit .250 in the 3 games he caught for LV. Gosewisch, soon to be 26, is an Arizona State product that has been in the Phils system since 2005. He was the Phils 11th round pick in the 2005 draft. In 60 games for Reading this year, Gosewisch hit .244 with 1 HR and 20 RBI. He has a reputation as being a very good defensive catcher and has thrown out 37% of runners trying to steal this year. I would expect Gosewisch and Paul Hoover to split the catching duties for Lehigh Valley.
—Michael Taylor was a late scratch from the Lehigh Valley lineup on Sunday. No other details are currently available.
Pitching Probables: Monday: Chacin; Tuesday: Savery; Wednesday: Lopez, Thursday: Carpenter.
i wonder of gosewisch will ever be a ML backup/ Paul Bako type

I think Gosewicsch could well be a major league backup. His offensive numbers aren’t great this year, but they are better than his 2007 and 2008 numbers. Strangely, he was skipped a level to CLW in 2006 and hit fairly well. Then the last two seasons were an offensive desert. Don’t know what happened to him between 2006 and 2007, when he moved backward from high-A to low-A, and put up worse numbers. A good defensive catcher who puts up a .699 OPS in high-A ball at age 22 is a legit prospect. Not the same Tuffy since then.

Gosewisch could easily be an MLB back-up, in fact, now I would say he is the favorite to soon be one when rosters expand September 1. That’s what they should do , at this point, and maybe they outright him after the season, then sign him to a minor league deal after the season. I would say likelihood of September 1 call-up as 3rd catcher: 1, Goschewich 2. Tim Gradoville (coach) 3. Paul Hoover 4. Joel Naughton.

The order in my mind is 1. Gosewisch 2. Hoover 3. Naughton. I dont think Gradoville would be considered as a call up under any circumstances.

Meantime, Taylor named IL batter of the week:
Michael Taylor was near the top of the International League in several offensive categories this week, setting several new records for his young Lehigh Valley franchise along the way. Though he collected hits in just three of his six games, Taylor posted a .417 average (10th) with 2 home runs (T-4th), 8 RBI (T-4th), 5 extra-base hits (T-5th), and a .833 slugging percentage (5th). The first bit of history came in the 7th inning Tuesday night, when Taylor became the first IronPigs outfielder ever to record two assists in one inning. The next evening, Taylor used his bat to make more Lehigh Valley history. Going 5-5 with 2 doubles, a triple, a homer, and 4 RBI, Taylor became the franchise’s first player to hit for the cycle. He also established new team records with 5 hits and 12 total bases. The cycle could hardly have come in more dramatic fashion, as the home run tied the game at 9-9 with one out in the bottom of the 9th (the ‘Pigs won 10-9 in 10 innings). Taylor also homered and drove in four more runs over the weekend at Buffalo.
23-year-old Michael Taylor is in his first season playing above the Class-A level. He began the year with Double-A Reading, with whom he hit .333 with 15 HR and 65 RBI in 86 games. After playing in the Eastern League All-Star Game, he was promoted to Lehigh Valley. Taylor is a native of Cheverly, Maryland.
