Box Score Roundup, 8/10

Lets take a look at last night’s games

AAA: Lehigh Valley lost 4-3.

* Andrew Carpenter gave up 4 ER in 7 IP, only the second time in his last 10 starts where he’s given up more than 3ER. He struck out 7 and walked only 1

AA: Reading was off

Check below for the rest

A+: Clearwater won 7-2.

* Freddy Galvis goes 3/5 with 2 runs scored
* Cody Overback was 1/4 with a double, and has hit .270 over his last 10 games with 6 doubles. 0 walks and 13K is a concern, obviously
* Drew Naylor went the distance, allowing 2 ER. He struck out 3 and walked 1

A: Lakewood won 4-0.

* Travis D’Arnaud went 2/4 with his 30th double of the season
* Matt Way turned in another gem, going 7 scoreless, allowing only 3 hits. He struck out 11 and walked none. He now has a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings at Lakewood and a 1.39 ERA overall in 51.2 IP, with 63K and 9 BB. Quite a debut

SS: Williamsport was off

RK: GCL Phillies won 6-3.

* Jon Singleton went 1/3 with his 3rd double, and now has a .995 OPS in 43 AB
* Julio Rodriguez went 5 innings, giving up 2 ER, struck out 5 and walked 4

  1. Hey PP, any chance Way skips Clearwater next year? They’ve been agressive with college aged guys lately.

  2. D’arnaud is 2 extra base hits away from duplicating Howards output at Lakewood. And Howard was 22 at the time.

  3. Its hard to miss what some of our pitchers are doing. Its tough however to know if they’re that good or if they’re just too old for the level. Hyatt is 23 and shouldn’t be at Wmsprt. My guess is the Phils will double bump quite a few to Clearwater or Reading next year. An abundance of pitching is never a problem though. Boy, they have lots of possible players to send to the Arizona League this year.

  4. We assume Singleton replaces Howard after his contract is up, right? It will be tough to see him go, but in the mean time I feel like I need to be pulling extra hard for Singleton

  5. In 06 when Hamels at 22 began his meteoric rise to the 25 man roster that season, he opened in Lakewood with a 5.2 inning start, giving up a run and struck out 3 before going on to Clearwater, SWB and then to the Bigs. At 22, Way in his two starts at Lakewood over 14 innings has given up one earned run and struck out 20. They really should give Way a shot at a higher level before the season ends to see what they have.

  6. Two comments on this string.

First, on Way, my guess is that they do double-jump him to Clearwater as they did with Worley and Stutes. Many here think Worley and Stutes have struggled, but my impression is that the front office and farm system people are happy they made the jump. So I expect they’ll try the same thing with Way.

Second, on Singleton – the guy’s in rookie league and people have him replacing Ryan Howard in three years? That conclusion’s a little premature, don’t you think?

  7. I’ve been watching Senator Specter’s town hall meeting on health care reform and I need a break!!

Of all the prospects featured I’m most excited about Travis d’Arnaud. He’s becoming what I thought Lou Marson would be;a defensive catcher first with above average hitting ability. Clearly, his power potential is the biggest separator between the two and I’m glad the Phillies kept him at the trading deadline.
How soon can he get to Philly and challenge Ruiz for the starting job?

I think Way has a good shot at Reading next year. I don’t see the point in doing anything now as he isn’t left with enough time to establish himself.

We have reasonable hope that Worley and Stutes are just fatigued. I hope.

  11. I would think D’Arnaud is a one level at a time guy. Clearwater in 2010, Reading 2011. Maybe in 2012 he could have a shot at the Phillies as AA really is the top level of most prospects.

The big club is probably regretting the Jaramillo trade at this point. He would make a nice 200 AB backup for a couple of years at the major league minimum. We certainly will sign a backup catcher in the offseason.

  13. With due respect to Jaramillo, his output is hardly making me sweat the day the Phils traded him. You can find a good backup catcher anywhere, and lord knows I see enough of them at AAA. There are 30 backup catchers in MLB, and more than 30 catchers who can do the job.

And this is again where I’d stress to not get fooled by sample sizes. Last ten games, 50 some plate appearances, whatever they may be. You get flukish performances in a full SEASON, let alone a tenth of one.

  19. I was not saying the Jaramillo deal that ended up with Taschner was necessarily bad. But if we knew that we might deal Marson, we would not have dealt Jaramillo. There are lots of catchers around and we will get one. We just might have to spend a few million on it.

  20. Has singleton even been designated to 1b?? I would assume he’s playing there because that was his position in high school. A lot of people change positions from high school to professional. This year he’s adjusting to a wood bat, maybe next year he tries some other positions. He doesn’t appear overly athletic and from what I have read, doesn’t have a great arm, but the phillies could still try him in left field to see what kind of versatility/position flexibility he has. Before we have him replace a MLB player lets settle on a position for him.

  21. Yeah but plans change and when you get a chance to trade for a Cy Young winner mid-season, you give up that prospect. Ruiz is a steady starter (if not great) and d’Arnaud isn’t that far away. We can deal with a crappy backup catcher till then as we filled a major need in the rotation as a result of sacrificing Marson.

Giving up Jason to the Pirates was a classy (if a little short-sighted) move by Rube to give a rapidly aging prospect a legit chance at an MLB career that didn’t seem possible in Philly. Granted, now it looks a bit silly as he’d be a perfect backup (switchhitter even) for Ruiz but hey, crap happens, I guess.

  24. My instinct tells me that D’Arnaud is going to be one hell of a player. My son saw him at Lakewood and said that he just carries himself differently – he had outstanding body language. He believes he is going to be “the man” and, if you have that much raw talent, that can be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  25. Way’s polish and devastating change-up seem to be simply overmatching hitters at these levels. It’ll be interesting to see how quickly he moves. I’d start him at Clearwater next year — Reading is pretty aggressive, and he can always wind up there if he pitches well in High-A.

  26. Galvis should really give up on the switch hitting, he’s hitting .271 from the left side and .148 from the right. He might blossom in to a nice MI option batting only from the left.

  27. I have no problem with Way starting at Clearwater. What’s the worst thing that happens? He dominates and they promote him. I think the team has become much more aggressive about moving advanced players over the last few years. They are sometimes a hair too slow with some guys, but, overall, their timing has been good.

  28. Sig – I think first base is as good as a position as any. They have plenty of guys that can play the OF in the minors. They don’t have a prospect at the 1B position though. They really haven’t in years (since Howard)

  29. – Dugan is making Phillies scouts look smart (and everyone here who hated the pick look dumb) by consistently making contact and flashing gap power. Considering our glut of outfielders and his experience playing 1B, shouldn’t he be playing 1st?
    – Good to see Collier hitting after his demotion. A lot of scouts overestimated how advanced he was offensively.
    – Thought of a Hewitt comp- Adrian Beltre. Both are amazing athletes with questionable baseball instincts. Beltre is a gold glove 3b, but used to make a lot of errors and compensated for weak fundamentals and bad footwork with elite athleticism. Both have muscular builds, great arm strength, great speed and awesome power, yet lack plate discipline. Hewitt certainly has the tools to stay at the hot corner, and with experience, could develop the necessary instincts to play there at the top level.
    – D’Arnaud should start at Reading next year. Valle should spend more time behind the plate and its not like we have anyone better at that level.
    – After 4 years of college ball, Way could and maybe should double-jump to Reading next season.

  30. d’Arnaud this spring at the Complex reminded me of a young Johnny Bench. Bench was in AAA at 19 . making the jump from A+ the year before and caught 26 games for the Reds that year. Why not 20 year old d’Arnaud to atleast AA from A-.next year with mid season AAA. promotion.

  37. Bottom line is that Jaramillo wasn’t good enough to bump Coste or Ruiz, and plus we wanted to know what Marson could do. It made sense that we traded him, and I had predicted it for months before they finally pulled the trigger. I wasn’t that impressed with Jaramillo based on the LV games I went to last year. My friends wouldn’t have known he was even a prospect if I hadn’t told them.

  38. Hey,
There is a lot of differing opinion on some of these guys within this site. That is understandable. But, It is getting tough to read. You can’t be sure who is being sincere and who is not.

One thing we should all agree on is that the Phils are dealing with a lot of young players with “tools”. Remember when their entire minor league system was medium skilled white guys just filling out rosters? That was not too long ago. It used to be one prospect per level maximum. Now we are looking at many guys with that dreaded “potential”. Yes, it is up to them to develop these guys, but it sure is fun to have something to work with. Let’s try to focus on the positives. I appreciate the insight of guys who have seen some of these guys. It is great to hear exciting things from 1st hand viewers.

  39. We should cool the Johnny Bench talk with D’Arnaud. His hitting .250, even with respectable power is perfect evidence that he is a 1 level per year guy. Bench was slugging .520 in AAA during a defensive era at age 19. There is no comparison.

What D’Arnaud might eventually be is a solid defensive catcher with 20+ HR power that hits around .270. That is pretty good but it is not Johnny Bench.

On the Beltre comparison, here’s the difference.

    Hewitt is 19 rights. When he’s 20, he’ll be at Lakewood . . . if he’s lucky.

When Beltre was 20, he was playing for the Dodgers . . . the L.A. Dodgers.

    Right now, there’s no comparison.

  42. D’Arnaud started slow, which is why he is batting .250. He was batting .192 at the end of May and he’s been on fire since then. I’ve been to 25 plus Lakewood games and he (and Gose) is extremely impressive to watch. I’m not saying he’s Johnny Bench…but he is the future. He’s a completely different player from the beginning of the year. Remember he’s just 20.

  44. The big problem with Hewitt is his age. He was 19 when drafted, which means that he has to go on the 40 man after 2011, not 2012 like most high school guys taken in the 2008 draft.

He’s going to be one of those guys who uses all 3 of his option years before he’s ready to be a full time player in the big leagues.

The comment about him replacing Howard was crazy enough, I just took it one step farther, that’s all. I guess if we didn’t have so many serious comments about X-prospect being this or that in the majors for sure then it wouldn’t have caused the confusion. I should have put a disclaimer on it. Anyway, Singleton has looked good so far, but we can’t be calling him a major leaguer, MVP, or HOF. Yet.*

  47. Re: Dugan

Baxter, I don’t see why you’d want Dugan playing 1st base right now. If everything goes right and he turns into a 20-25 homer guy at the plate. His value would be much higher playing in the outfield, than playing 1st base where you need to hit for much more power. Plus it doesn’t hurt to have a player who can play LF, CF, RF & 1B ala Nick Swisher.

Plus they have Singleton at 1st on the GCL team.

  48. Rickey, your comparison of Hamels’s trajectory and Way is misleading – Hamels was rehabbing in 2006 when he had one start in Lakewood. Hamels was in the Lakewood rotation in 2003 when he was 19. He had a 0.84 ERA and 115Ks in 74 and 2/3 innings. Way is not even close to Hamels. He’s already been promoted once, let’s see him dominate and maybe get a double-bump in the offseason.

Also, someone wondered about Dugan not playing 1B – Singleton is playing 1B and doing great, I wouldn’t give Dugan ABs over Singleton right now.

  49. Found this interesting, there’s a guy with a website called “www.scoutingthesally.com” I’m not sure whether he has any scouting background or anything, but he goes to the games record velocities etc and give his take on what he sees. Here’s his twitter updates on Mattair from tonight.

“Travis Mattair of the Phillies with an amazing catch on a blooper to left in the pouring rain.”

“Travis Mattair of the Phils is probably the best defensive 3B I’ve seen this year.”

He also said Gose had two diving catches in the gaps tonight, and has some of the best range he’s seen. Also raved about D’Arnaud the past two nights.

“1 hand play by Mattair on a slow roller for the out. Have I mentioned this guy can play a little “D”?”

“@kingclip Mattair has made more plays in two games than I see in two months. Now if he could only learn to hit just a little.”

  51. It’s funny how some people get so enamored with our (former) prospects. Jaramillo was an average catcher who was hitting .270 in two years worth of AAA. He did throw out a third of baserunners, respectable, but he was no breakthrough player. Maybe I caught him on his 10 bad games? One game I saw he was particularly bad, with two errors I think. I do wish we had gotten more for him than a journeyman LHP who can’t pitch to LH, but that’s life.

  53. AndyB: agree Phils erred in letting Jaramillo go. I said that a few times here, including the day it happened. How do you let an intelligent guy go who can hit LH, has shown flashes of hitting, takes walks, and can catch pretty well? For an underachiever like Paulino whom the Bucs gave up on? Trading someone on the rise–even a role player like Jaramillo–for someone on the way down can often be a big mistake.

Maybe it was the Phils effort to see if they could pull off another successful dumpster dive. But the guys they have gotten that way so far (Dobbs, Werth, Vic) have all had very positive makeup factors. Paulino seems to be the opposite, by all reports.

  54. Nepp, it might have been a classy act. That is the only reason I can tolerate the Jaramillo trade. BTW (to other posters), I think small moves and role players are also important and worth commentary.

But classy act or no, they should be thinking they might have to trade Marson or there might be injuries and catching is only second to pitching in you can’t have too much of it.

Given the lack of commentary on this point by anyone but me (from what I have read, anyway), I don’t think it’s generally appreciated enough what value a good defensive catcher who hits well LH can bring. Last year and this, JJ’s LH splits have been very good. That feature lifts the total offensive performance of a catching corp and gives some pinch-hitting options also.

  55. Interesting about Mattair’s defense. I have been ready to write him off. If his defense is so good, maybe we can simply slow-track him, consider him org filler, and then if his bat takes off one year, we at least have some sort of journeyman who might contribute in a pinch to big club in 2012/13, if not more.

  56. Mattair has hit well enough to be promoted to Clearwater, I say he will be. Then it will be known what he can do.

Pulaski was affiliated with Seattle Mariners last time I looked. It was open for awhile but Seatlle was the only team that would go in. We will see what affiliations open up in the offseason. I would think if they wanted another Rookie League team they would add another in Clearwater GCL, especially money wise.

If Jaramillo was an above average defensive catcher he would be a loss. I say they moved him because he was not adjudged to be. I see some Pirates games and I don’t see alot of defense. Jaramillo seldom has played since Doumit has returned, and I would say neither offers that much defense. Neither would exceed what Philies have now in Ruiz and Bako, so the Phillies are fine at catcher, and both can give the occasional offensive chipping in this team might require from time to time. Defense is what matters at catcher, so I don’t see the need to change at catcher or at reserve Middle Infield with Bruntlett. The same issue was argued late last season, with no moves being made, as I said last season.

  57. Martinsville was Phils affiliate in App League, not Pulaski. Madson, Brad Baisley, Franklin Nunez, Carlos Silva and Derrick Turnbow pitched there in 1998. That’s some GOOD minor lleague pitching they had that year. Reminds me of our current pitching prospects. The great Nate Espy and Jorge Padilla were the hitting stars–pretty good minor league hitters, both.

    Like

  58. Diamond Derby…I don’t see where Jaramillo was anything special with the bat. Look at his minor league stats next to Ruiz, who many think is worthless with the bat. At the same age and at the same level, Ruiz outperforms JJ every time. No amount of defense will make up for that. At best, JJ is a back-up catcher and nothing more. He is no better/worse than Bako, so we really gave up nothing by trading him.
