7/24/09–Control was the issue of the day for Carlos Carrasco (6-9) as Lehigh Valley opened a three game series against Gwinnett with a 7-5 loss. A three run third inning off of Carrasco opened the scoring with 2 lead off walks coming around to score. The ‘Pigs picked up two runs in the 5th, behind a Terry Tiffee RBI single, but walks hurt Carrasco again in the 3 run Gwinnett sixth inning, with another walk coming around to score. Carrasco left having gone 6 innings and given up 6 runs on 4 hits. He walked 4 and struck out 5. Lehigh Valley scored one in the 7th on a David Newhan sac fly and 2 more in the ninth to make the game close. Terry Tiffee has 2 hits for Lehigh Valley, while Michael Taylor was 1-3 with a stolen base (2).
7/25/09–Because of the slew of roster moves, Lehigh Valley had to call upon Jake Woods, a reliever to start the game Saturday and an already depleted bullpen to finish, but came out of the night with an 8-5, 10 inning win over Gwinnett. Woods went 3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit, while walking 2. Lehigh Valley jumped on the board early with two runs in the first on a Mike Cervenak RBI single and a sac fly by Michael Taylor, giving the ‘Pigs a 2-0 lead. Gwinnett tied the game up in the 3rd with two runs, and the game stayed 2-2 until the sixth, when Lehigh Valley added 2 more on a Paul Hoover 2 run single. That lead didn’t last long as Gwinnett tied the game at four in the bottom of the inning. Lehigh Valley went up 5-4 in the 7th on a Terry Tiffee RBI single, but Gwinnett answered back once again to tie the game at five. It stayed that way until a three run 10th inning busted the game open for the ‘Pigs. Lou Marson came in as a pinch hitter in the 10th and drew a bases loaded walk, scoring the go ahead run. Cedric Bowers (3-2) got the win in relief for the ‘Pigs, while Gary Majewski earned his 4th save of the year. Several ‘Pig hitters had big games including Mike Cervenak (3-6,r,3RBI’s), Terry Tiffee (2-5,r,rbi), Andy Tracy (2-5), and Paul Hoover (2-4,2rbi’s).
7/26/09–Brian Mazone (0-3) had a rough outing, starting for Lehigh Valley on Sunday in their 5-1 loss to Gwinnett. Mazone went 5 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 4, the big inning being a four run 4th inning by Gwinnett. The lone ‘Pig run came in the first, on a Mike Cervenak RBI single. This was a game that really was never in doubt, as the ‘Pigs simply couldn’t piece together any offense.

I watched the ironpigs this weekend while in Atlanta on business and saw the first 2 games.
Michael Taylor is very impressive, big and strong with excellent athleticism. His quickness and speed are legit as he tagged up from third and scored on a very shallow ball to center, stole third base and would have stolen third twice had not Tiffee been thrown out at second on a play Taylor had a substantial jump on. On another play he made a running catch from a deep outfield position to just behind third.
Patient hitter who walked after an 0-2 count and also took one at bat to the 12th pitch before recording a hard hit single. He was 2-8 over the two days I watched, but could have easily been 6-8 as four of his balls were caught after exceptional play by 2 different outfielders. Every ball this kid hit was solidly struck and comes off his bat with power heard in the stands. It is definitely a different sound.
It is something to watch this kid play and if I could have I would have returned to see him Sunday.
