JA Happ removed from his start today

Rumors swirling. Happ was removed in the 3rd inning, and according to 1 report, was being congratulated in the dugout, or at least it didn’t appear he was injured. If he was being recalled by the big league team, it seems odd to remove him mid inning. The more likely scenario is a trade in the works. Stay tuned.

  1. I am very scared. If this is for a lefty reliever I am going to go insane… I have a weird feeling it may have something to do with Manny Ramirez, I may be way off base, just a feeling…

  3. The report on the radio by Jim Jackson was, that they are just trying to lower his pitch count, because he pitched a lot recently. Take it or leave it, but that’s what he said. He was initially worried he got hurt.

  4. Forget Holliday, I’d be more excited about Jason Bay. Holliday’s road numbers are nothing special.

  5. LHV announcers, from what I’ve been reading online, have said Happ’s been recalled.

    Jim Jackson has contradicting information.

My guess is he’s involved in a deal or someone in the rotation is involved in a deal and TPTB don’t want to say anything regarding Happ until whatever happens…er…happens.

  6. That would be a seriously low pitch count. He couldn’t have been above 40. Bensen had higher pitch counts in rehab. Happ won’t be making his next start for the Pigs.

  9. There is a report that says Ramirez would waive his no trade clause and approve any trade that could be made. Ramirez can only play left field, however, so where would that leave Pat? I am sure we are not trading for Ramirez, but like I said before, I just have a feeling even if it makes no logical sense. This is all just speculation on my part, by the way… I hope Happ is simply getting called up to replace Eaton, that would be a dream come true.

  15. Manny isn’t worth what he’s likely value would be to the Phils. He’s be an overglorified platoon with Werth, who’s much better against LHP than Manny is (.994 OPS.)

Phils should aim for pitching of any kind, SP in particular, and just hope to Jenkins can revert to his 2006-7 form.

My guess is Happ is being called up to relieve for the Phils and possible replace Myers.

  19. From Scott Lauber:

“Sat down with Pat Gillick for a few minutes during the rain delay, and he said the No. 1 priority before Thursday’s trade deadline is finding a lefty reliever to, in his words, “give [J.C.] Romero more breathing room.” Romero presently is the lone lefty in the Phils’ bullpen. But Gillick also said “it’s a possibility” that they could wait until the August waiver deadline to acquire a pitcher because a few quality arms may clear waivers. Remember, the Phillies didn’t trade for Jamie Moyer in 2006 until two weeks after the July 31 deadline.

Also, about those Manny Ramirez-to-the-Phillies reports that have been circulating in other cities: Forget about it. Gillick said last winter that the Phils wouldn’t be eager to welcome the many distractions that come with Manny being Manny, and there’s no indication that his or the Phillies’ stance has changed. More important, though, Manny doesn’t play right field, and if the Phillies add a bat, it most likely would have to be in right field.”

You get manny, you are going to be favorites to represent the nl in the world series. What is so sad is that every one used to just laugh it off and just say it’s just manny being manny, now if you go to weei.com wich is the # one radio station in all of new england for sports everyone calling in to station wants manny gone, or not pick up his option………………………….so i dought manny will be traded but if he does, who ever ends up with him you will be favorites nl or al does not matter the league

  31. Patsox: I think (most) everyone knows how good Manny is. There is no way the Red Sox would trade him straight up for J.A. Happ. But regardless of the price, the Phillies can’t use both him and Burrell unless the N.L. adopts the DH or allows teams to use 4 outfielders in the next several weeks. It’s as dumb as the Barry Bonds campaign Mike Missanelli has been trying to start.

    2008 Manny (age 36): .298/.398/.524 (140 OPS+, team cancer.)

Phils don’t need a LF. They have one of the best in baseball since June of 2007, who they *should* be extending. Phils need a guy who can hit RHP (.800 OPS or above) and play RF and arms (LH reliever or SO starter.)

J.A. Happ was not traded..This is coming from a guy who checks the rumor boards religiously. There has been no new rumors the last 2 hours on this. If there was some three way trade or what not, you would at least hear whispers on it. As far as Manny is concerned, let’s please stop this argument. Manny is not going anywhere. He WILL however be a free agent at the end of the year. Yes, he is a much better player then Pat…Pat puts up solid numbers for a 14mil/yr a guy. Manny is a clutch and big game hitter but isn’t going to be worth the 20 mil for the Phils. He’s going to be 37 and most likely will want close to a 4 yr 90 mil dollar deal this offseason. For the 2 months, I would rather stick with Burrell. The 6 million extra hopefully will go to a Sherrill type.

My opinion, the best move for the Philies would be to use Myers as as setup man then trade him in the offseason to someone who will let him close. He’ll help for the stretch run and if he pitches well, his trade value will be much improved.

  64. look the only way I can see it is that happ with other prospects was tradded to Bos the reason it is not offical is because they are still waiting on manny to accept the trade. 65. Saenez or Eaton is getting DFA’d or put on the DL, they were BOTH called into Manuel’s office after the game.

I assume Myers gets 1 or 2 more starts, depending on what he does he’ll either stay in the rotation or be sent to the bullpen and will work his way up the totem pole into a set up role. Happ will start in the Pen and depending on how Myers does he’ll either be long man/ second LH reliever or go into the rotation.

The second part is all speculation now, but I think it is a good move by the team & should help us.

    Like

  66. the only move that makes sense is to move Happ to the rotation and myers to be the set up guy that they’ve been looking for to replace an ailing Gordon. myers already said he doesn’t want to be traded so he’d likely go for being the 8th inning guy.

The Red Sox have guys like Big Papi and Lowell and a whole host of others who don’t get distracted by Manny’s antics. They just play. The Phillies would be bothered by Manny and the clubhouse would meltdown. They’d we waiting around for Manny to get the big hit. If Manny had a Pete Rose attitude, he’d be inducted into the Hall of Fame 5 years before he stopped playing. He’d be making $35M a year. But Manny is… well… just being Manny. 77. Maybe Happ as a long man would be marginally OK. He doesn’t seem to have the command he would need to be a situational lefty.

    Like

  78. As much as we want them to throw Happ into the rotation, Myers will get at least two more starts (unless he is just THAT bad tonight). They are forced to bank on him becoming a solid starter again because we would be lame ducks in the playoffs without a solid #2 guy. The problem is that realistically the chances of him coming back and being affective this year are pretty slim. Think of it like a single year prospect. Myers has the bigger upside for 2008, but the probability for reaching his potential is decreasing every 5 days.

    Like

  79. Happ should be a starter. If they were going to bring him up for the bullpen they should have switched him to the pen in AAA several months ago. Outman was the guy they wanted to bring up as a lefty reliever but it didn’t happen.

Any baseball team lives or dies by their 5 man rotation and right now we have no idea what to expect. Hamels (1) is the crown jewel but still not a veteran leader. Blanton (4) has had a rough season in the AL and who knows how he’ll respond to Philly. Moyer (4) uses smoke and mirrors and is on borrowed time. Kendrick (4) is consistent but doesn’t have overpowering stuff. Happ (5) is a wide-eyed rookie jumping into a pennant race.

Myers may well have pitched his way out of the rotation and into the pen as a set up man. Too bad — they really needed him to be an ace this season but he’s never even come close.

To win the World Series you need a rotation no worse than 1,2,2,4,5, not 1,4,4,4,5. Maybe they’ll get lucky with what they have. Everyone would have to get hot at once and still they’d need good breaks. Here’s hoping…

  80. I, too, like the idea of having Myers as a set-up man for 2008, thereby setting the stage for an off season trade for him to close with another club. Myers is too erratic and makes too much money for the team to mess around with him for much longer. Let him pitch out the year, get value for him this offseason and let’s move one.

  81. happ must be in the rotation. anyone could see wnen he was up his command of the situation. aside from that he is a lefty and leftys are who you want pitching against the mets. thats why moyer is so effective aginst the marlins, they are too young and aggressive against a smart pitcher like moyer. manuel has to wake up and set his rotation according to the team. and have you noticed saturday and last saturday he was left pitchers in who were getting bombed as if the game was over. you cant do that. the 1st hint of trouble that pen should be ready. the phils bats will not always bail him out.

  82. i like happ a lot…i am just worried about having a rookie in the starting rotation through a pennant run. but i don’t see how he can be worse than blanton or eaton (if he ever gets recalled). damn…we really need a starting pitcher. i don’t understand all of the focus on a lefty releaver. without better starters, we won’t get to the releavers unless we are several runs back. the come backs like we did on the braves will NOT happen in the playoffs.

    Like

  83. haven’t we toyed with enough starters bringing them back and forth from the bullpen? When will we realize that this doesn’t often work well. Smoltz, Eckersley are the exceptions not the rule. Outman, Myers, (well at least Eaton sucked to begin with). Don’t do anything with Happ except start him.

    xfactor,

i will slightly argue that maybe we have 1-hamels, 3-kendrick, 3-moyer, 5-happ. 15-blanton. For the playoffs you really only need 3 possibly 4 so let’s drop off blanton for now (which especially stings considering what we were fleeced for him for but i digress). If we add an AJ Burnett (the one that pitched several weeks back vs the NYY, of the 7 IP, 3H, 1BB 8K variety that to me could be a 2. and then who knows if we can hit where we can go.

If we wait until August to get him we could probably get him on the cheap if he clears waivers. Maybe 2-3 marginal prospects??

    Like

  84. Kendrick is not a #3 pitcher by any stretch of the imagination. Kendrick is a solid #4/5, for our team and on a good team is probably a #5/6. Moyer does not use smoke andf mirrors either, he uses superior knowledge/game experience great control with a multitude of off-speed pitches to get major-league hitters out. R.J Swindle is what one would call a “smoke-and-mirrors” type of pitcher.

Happ is most likely going to the bullpen, so any arguments about who would start in the playoffs should not include him (unless he’s given the shot to start soon, which I would fully approve of.) In all likelihood, Happ is in the rotation next year, assuming Moyer doesn’t come back or if Myers is traded/put in the bullpen.

I would only give up a Matt Maloney type guy for Burnett right now, Drew Carpenter maybe? But I highly doubt the Jays would take that, if he opts out he shuld at least be considered a type “B” sign.

    Would’t Carrasco make more sense.

  98. myers is going nowhere. he has NO trade value. that value needs to be built back up in the bullpen and he’s currently making 12 million and can’t get anyone out. Maybe we can trade him for Oswalt???

i really hope we don’t trade young promising pitching for offense.

  100. i keep hearing halladay’s name pop up in these discussions anyone know his contract status and if the phillies somehow got halladay, would he be here for more than the second half of the season this year

  101. antother interesting thing about halladay, he is slated to start tommorow so if anything is going on, we will see if he makes that start or gets pulled early or something of that sort

  102. I DO NOT want Gillick to make any more trades. He is a moron the only reasons he looks good is because the last GM was horrible and Burrell Hamles Utley Howard the bullpen that he so called fixed. any one could off fixed take out gordon and Mesa if it was me Seanez would off never been signed calling up Swindle theres an extra 300,000$ we didn’t need to sign Burrell who is having one of his best seasons yet

  103. ph.808 i agree with with no more trades. donald, marson, happ and carrasco who i still have questions about regarding his breaking ball, will all be above average major leagers. i was at the als function at the bank tonite and i got the slight impression that happ is not in their plans. i hope im wrong but i did speak to basically the team and coaches, i even suggested to myers that the 8th inning looked good, he was very affable about it giving me the impression he would have no problems with it. i asked dubee where was happ and he looked at me with a stone face. there was not one mention of happ.

  104. “haven’t we toyed with enough starters bringing them back and forth from the bullpen? When will we realize that this doesn’t often work well. Smoltz, Eckersley are the exceptions not the rule. Outman, Myers, (well at least Eaton sucked to begin with). Don’t do anything with Happ except start him.”

Apparently Johan Santana, Adam Wainwright, Braden Looper, Joba Chamberlain, Justin Duchscherer, Ryan Dempster, Shawn Marcum, Chad Billingsley, and Kyle Lohse were exceptions to the rule. Going from starter to reliever obviously killed the careers of Eric Gagne, Jonathan Papelbon, Kerry Wood, Brian Wilson, and Brandon Lyon too…

I would say Moyer, Werth, Dobbs, Romero, Lidge, Durbin, and Bruntlett have been pretty good pick-ups.

Seanez was a minimum salary pick-up and he has a 3.06 ERA. He’s being doing poorly as of late but you’re going to rip the GM for successfully plugging a hole for a good 3 and a half months? You’re going to rip him for calling up a guy who was dominating hitters in the minors (especially lefties)?

So he missed on Jenkins but who really thought he’d drop 70 points in slugging percentage after moving into CBP? He missed on Taguchi but who here really thought he’d drop off so drastically from the numbers he’s put up the past few years?

So the Eaton signing was bad and the Blanton trade doesn’t look good so far. Two bad moves does not make him an idiot.

  107. Bluethree, first off if u r saying that he did a good job calling up happ u r right but it aint that hard to do when like u said he is domiating good hitters it took them this long to send eaton down and if u r going to plug a hole why not call up travis Blackley trades alone if u r not aware the phillies r still paying100% of helms what kind of smart Gm trades his player and pay 100% of his salary Im not saying every thing he does is a misstake Im just saying he is not good with trades two good trades in two years is not something to be proud of We gave up great propects for a guy who pitched what a total of five innings in two starts whats his next move give up Hamles Lidge for Andrew Jones because he was good couple years ago trade Utley Howard Victorino for Zito who was great couple years ago if u give up three great prspects for a guys era is around eatons whos record was worse then eaton come on now does this make sense the only reason Adrian Candreas was not in the Majors was because he was a second basemen they were gonna try and move him to third. Thank to All that left Comments

  108. wow. where do you start with that run on sentence?? I’ll just touch on the last point about Cardenas. Cardenas is a promising prospect but he was at single A Clearwater and is a long way from being in the majors. Notice that Oakland didn’t automatically move him up to their big club but sent him to their Class A affiliate as well. Guess Beane is an idiot as well!!

I meant calling up Swindle, which was a move that you ripped. If you have a lefty who is dominating hitters in the minors and a spot in your bullpen open, why not give him a shot?

  111. Bluethree you are forgetting about the Garcia trade…. And yes there were people who questioned that trade b/c of Garcia’s lost velocity.

  113. Phillies808,

Since much of you post was a conglomeration of rant and foolishness (trading Hamels for Jones, etc.) I had no desire to delve into the specifics.

Lets just say that no, its not the only thing I disagree with. But this site is focused on the Phillies minor league system and is not the proper forum to discuss Pat Gillick’s history as the Phillies GM.

  114. The Hamels for Jones etc. I was being sacastic. I said that because when we traded for Blanton (the past couple of years he has been great )This year his era is around Eaton’s his record was worst tan Eaton’s. FYI it was orginally about how Gillick traded the Phills Prospects away for Blanton and how it was an idiotic trade then some one asked my opinion on Gillick and one thing lead to another but I would like to stop talking about this so Im gonna stop talking about Gillick
