Okay kids…I appologize, but I spent the last week dreaming up new ways to make the news fun. The Threshers are awful. They finished the first half in last place, and then immediately jumped in to last place to start the second half of the season.
This may not exactly be informative, but it is fun, right?
Instead of a weekly write up I will start a weekly video newscast for the Clearwater Threshers. This is the first single game recap. Let me know if it is totally lame or what. (That is sort of the point.)
I’m just trying to find some way…ANY WAY…to keep myself interested in the rest of this Threshers season.
I can’t watch video at work, but I love to read your updates at work.

I’ll do a write up in the next day or so. There was no baseball last night, so I was goofing off.

Ha good stuff, Jeff.
Rough couple of outings for Naylor to begin his Clearwater career. His previously pristine command seems to have completely deserted him. 9 walks in 5.1 IPs last night? And now 18 free passes in 21.1 IP? Ouch.

OT – Just heard that the Blue Jays and Phillies are talking a trade for AJ Burnett with Michael Taylor as the centerpiece.

Ive heard they are interested in Burnett, but didn’t hear Taylor’s name mentioned. Have a link for that?

Don’t give up your day job! JK Actually I thought it was clever and it must have taken a lot of work. Especially liked the little guy at the end, obviously trying to get his 15 seconds of fame outside the studio windows of Good Morning America. A little Monty Python-like…
Let’s see how much new material you can come up with, but it certainly breaks the monotony of your every day blog site and I liked it…
Any truth to this Michael Taylor stuff mentioned above?

Yeah, Jim, if you have a link for that it would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve seen this article, which says that the Blue Jays would want one of Golson/Carrasco/Marson in a deal for Burnett. If the Phils could give up Golson (as you mentioned in the other thread, James, the time to sell on Golson is now) and Taylor for Burnett, then convince A.J. to waive his option to opt out, it’d be a helluva deal for the Phils.

IF they trade for AJ with an agreement to not opt out and he’s a bust, then we’re still stuck with him for 2 more years, right?

Yup…though he might be better in those 2 seasons.

Golson & Taylor for Burnette is a good deal. Phils have abundance of OF prospects, esp. after ’08 draft. Suggestion . . .Crupper give Razor the Dr. Seuss hat to wear in coaching box. Then use stealing, hit and run, & drag bunts. Players will re-awaken.

Sorry, I don’t have a link to an official source. This information came from reliable friends that live in Toronto and heard this on Blue Jays Talk Radio. Apparently one of Jays’ hitting coaches were talking about potential Burnett trades and they brought up Michael Taylor and the Phils. I just got a little more info and apparently Taylor is not the focal point of the trade, but that he must be included in any package from the Phils. Sorry for the mis-information there.

Therefore, reports say Carrasco, Golson or Marson MUST be included. Now they’re saying Taylor (allegedly) in addition to one of the others.

Carrasco, Golson, Marson…..which one is not like the others.

That’s why I’m all in favor of trading Golson at what I see to be his peak value.
I set up a poll over at The Good Phight offering two possible scenarios: one for Bedard and one for Burnett. Just pure speculation on my part, but I feel like these are the two pitchers the Phils are honing in on. But if the Jays are going to insist on Taylor (as you say, Jim), I’m not sure if Golson + Taylor is enough, and I definitely think that Golson + Donald + Taylor is too much.

Golson+Taylor+3rd okay piece is something I would pay for Burnett…as long as that 3rd piece wasn’t something major…maybe someone like Bastardo who’s a longshot would be okay.

I just don’t see how trading for Burnett, who makes $13.2 million and has a 5.23 era, is even close to being worth it. He’s just not going to put us over the top. Personally, I’d much rather send Happ out there, or hell even Blackley, than give up either Golson or Taylor for an overpaid, inconsistent, headcase of a starter.

I’m sorta with you bp. I’m intrigued by Burnett-big time. At the same time, he has the makings of a major bust. I don’t get the Burnett>Bedard folks at all. IF the trade pieces for either pitcher are similar, Bedard is the logical choice.

It doesn’t appear that the phils are willing to trade either carrassaco or marson, which is good for us… This is from Jayson Stark today
“The buzz in Philadelphia is that GM Pat Gillick has convinced ownership to take on a big contract if the right starting pitcher falls into their zip code. We’re not sure how hard that was, but even the most skeptical members of a conservative ownership group can’t help but see that the Phillies aren’t going anywhere without a high-impact starter. Then again, Sabathia was the guy they’d targeted. Yet they wouldn’t talk about either their best minor league arm, Carlos Carrasco, or their most advanced position player, catcher Lou Marson, in those Sabathia discussions. So without altering that stance, they might not even have the ammunition to get a second-tier starter. Phillies executives have been telling people they’re wary of both Erik Bedard and A.J. Burnett. But at this point, they have no choice but to stalk both of them. “

Is it just me or does Cardenas not really seem to be driving in too many runs? He only has 23 rbis in 250 at bats – and he’s been batting in the three spot most of the season. I guess that’s party the fault of the guys in front of him (Berry has been scorching hot this month, but he was really struggling for a while), but I’m thinking with his numbers that he should be driving in some more runs.

RBI’s are one of the most meaningless stats in baseball, especially at the minor league level. I am slightly worried about his back injury he was nursing and how that is affecting his power, but he’s performed so well the last year and a half, I’m not going to nitpick at this point.

Back injuries suck but he’s still hitting for very good average and XBHs. He’ll likely be okay.

Right now the buzz is Golson, either Harmon or Donald and a 3rd prospect for AJ Burnett.
Thoughts?
I’d do it in a second…especially if it turned out to be Harmon instead of Donald.

First, thanks for the reassurance about Cardenas – and his power (in terms of XBH) seems quite good this year – 6 triples!
Considering that the Phils are now in “Plan B” mode, they may have no other choice than Burnett. The time is definitely right to move Golson* – he had a very strong game last night, and is having a very solid year, despite his lack of plate discipline. I’d do that deal for GG, Harman and a middle of the road prospect (Chapman, Durant, et al). I’d really they rather not move Donald – he could probably be a contributor at the Major League level at this point.
* Given the way Dominic Brown is developing (42 BB!), I think that Golson might almost be expendable at this point
