Myers Sent Down

For the few who haven’t heard, Brett Myers has accepted an assignment to Lehigh Valley (AAA), and apparantly will start Wednesday evening against Scranton.  No annoucement has been made as to who will replace him in the Phils rotation/roster, but the speculation continued to be Happ or Carrasco.

  1. They will just skipping Myers spot in the rotation and move everyone up with the off day. Don’t have to make a decision until the end of the weekend.

  2. They announced it on Comcast a few minutes ago. It was a AAA pitcher. I thought they said Squire, but we don’t have anyone named Squire, maybe it was Swindle.

  3. I just heard on Comcast that the team called Swindle up, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll take Myers’ spot in the rotation. They said there’s no word on who will start in Myers’ spot.

  4. I’m happy that swindle got the call, the phillies need another LHRP but i hope this doesnt mean they’re goin w/ durbin over happ for the rotation

  5. there has been confusion, but from what i hear, swindle is not replacing myers on the roster. Swindle was called up to take condreys spot in the pen because he has been granted a few extra days of paternity leave since his first son cashton was born on Monday. The phillies still havent replaced myers on the roster and probably will not do so until the last second so that whatever team it is wont have a chance to prepare for the pitcher. I wouldnt be suprised, with all of the speculation on happ and carrasco, if mazone got the call.

  6. Yes Manzone has been solid and effective for the last 3 years. He missed his shot to debut when there was a rainout last year. Happ has the better upside as Manzone falls into the same catagory as Moyer and Kendrick as type of pitcher. Either one is fine with me. Hopefully in a month Benson and Myers will right thier ships and be ready for a return to the majors.

I also wonder if Gordon will be DL’ed even though he pitched last night. A lot of speculation on that.

  7. I’m of the mindset that you give Carrasco the call up and see if he’s the kind of kid that rises to the occassion. We said Happ was ready before IMO his stuff doesn’t translate to a major league starter.

The downside to bringing up Carrasco is if he struggles you could hurt his trade value should they decide they want to make a play for Sabathia or Bedard.

  8. Chad Durbin isn’t happening, according to Gillick:
“Durbin and the other people down there have done a pretty good job for us in the bullpen,” Gillick said. “I don’t think we’d want to change that. (Myers’ replacement) might not be within the 12 (pitchers) we have on our roster.”

    J.D.? That’s another story…

  9. I think Mazone makes sense. We’re fighting for first place and he’s a solid one or two game replacement. Myers won’t be in AAA long. Mazone gets his cup of coffee, and Happ replaces Moyer next year.

  10. Carrasco should have been scheduled to start tonight and did not. Reading started some guy named Harker instead. Looks like Carrasco may be being held back for the weekend.

  11. I can see them using Carrasco for maybe 1-2 spot starts just to give him the confidence boost but if they don’t expect Myers to be back within a week or two, I don’t think that Carrasco is ready to take multiple starts. He just isn’t very consistent yet.

Only reason I can see them not wanting to bring up Happ is that teams typically don’t like having 3 lefties in the rotation.
