The Clearwater Threshers have been rolling lately, and the train just kept on going in Thursday night’s effort versus the Jupiter Hammerheads. The team picked up their fourth consecutive win, and their fifth in the last six games. Coming into the game the team had just eight home runs in the first 33 games of the year, however the club picked up four home runs on the night with Jake Blalock, Welinson Baez, Tuffy Gosewisch and Clay Harris each crushing a long ball all for the first time as a Thresher this season.

In all the team picked up seventeen hits, including a triple by Matt Spencer (his first of the year), two doubles, one by Jesus Villegas (his second) and one by Gus Milner (his sixth). The hit by Milner also extended his hitting streak to sixteen games. All starting players picked up at least one hit on the night with six players getting mulitple hits including Jake Blalock who had three hits in the game including his home run; he was good for two RBIs and two runs on the night.
Edgar Garcia picked up his fifth win in his last five starts going six innings giving up just two runs on seven hits with three Ks and two walks. The bullpen held the Hammerheads to just one more run on four hits with Matt German, Bear Hill, and Darren Byrd combining to seal the win for the Threshers.
For his fifth consecutive win Edgar Garcia picked up the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award, but a big shout out goes to the entire team in this effort.

  1. Jeff. With that kind of pop and if you ever get Cardenas back, your guys might get back in contention for another FSL flag.
What’s the story on this Sam Walls guy? Seems like he is developing into a good ground ball/strike um out closer.

  2. Thanks, Jeff. Question: I know that miracles don’t often happen, but I’ve noticed that a long-term failure–Welinson Baez–has been doing much better at the plate recently. Is it possible that–after these several years flailing iun the minors, he’s finally STARTING to get it together.

Is this a false hope; or is there really reason to believe that he has turned some corner and he could become a good player after all this time in the minors??

I don’t suppose that his fielding at 3rd base is more than adequate…???

  3. #1) Sam Walls has been very solid out of the bullpen this year. He has become the team’s closer after starting as the setup man. I really don’t know what he throws, but he has a nice delivery and is a great kid on top of it all.

#2) Welinson Baez has been much better the last couple of weeks, but I’m not yet ready to announce that he has turned the corner. I HOPE he has turned a corner, and if he keeps this up a bit longer maybe I’ll admit that he has. A good two week stretch though is not enough.

#3) Cardenas said he had an old stress fracture that he never knew he had, and it caused a muscle strain in his back. He said he has been ready to play for about a week, but that the Phillies are just babying him at this point. He told me he would be back in the lineup on Monday.

  4. How’s Savery looking stuffwise? Has he gotten his velocity back from his time at Rice? He used to be a decent power lefty from what I remember of the College WS that year.

  5. Sutff-wise Savery seems fine. He has just been very inconsistent. He’ll look really good one outing with a bunch of Ks and few walks, and then the next game he may walk as many as he fans. He’ll be fine in the long run I’m sure…

  6. To Jeff Crupper.

Do you think Drew Naylor will be up from Lakewood with Threshers soon?

What about Joel Naughton his favourite Catcher?

My feelings are that Naylor must be close and Naughton later this season if he keeps batting hot.

  7. All I know about Naylor is what I see from his stats. Based on that I would have to say that yes, I think he will probably be at Clearwater at some point this year. That of course depends on what the Phillies “plan” for him is. My guess would be that Naylor would be moved up some time in June after the draft, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see it happen sooner. He has looked better and better as the season has gone on. Saturday’s complete game looked like a gem.

I would guess that Joel Naughton would probably NOT be moved up simply because Tuffy Gosewisch is already doing a good job of handling the pitchers at Clearwater, and Naughton could get more playing time by staying at Lakewood.
