The DSL season started last Saturday, though the web site has been slow with updates. The roster for the team was finally posted today.
Lots of new players on the roster this year. Notable holdovers include pitchers Yohan Flande (age 21), Daury Luna (age 21), and OF Vladimir De Los Santos (age 20). These guys are probably not prospects any more and should dominate the league. It will be interesting to see which new players get lots of playing time. The younger players that get regular playing time are most likely the prospects to watch, regardless of how well they play this year.

Lots of solid pitcher’s frames there. Have a read on any of these guys yet?

6’9″ is one heck of a size for a pitcher. The ball is halfway to the plate before it leaves his hand with the long arms that must have. I hope some of these kids look promising because we could use a few suprises in the DSL and VSL to replentish our system and finally break into the latino market.

If the Phillies follow their usual pattern we sign a bunch of projectible young arms and hope some develop. I would not be shocked if many of these guys only throw in the mid-80s now. The hope is that a couple of years of instruction, better nutrition, and physical maturity will produce a major league arm. Most of the prospects we are signing are not high-priced and need to project some if they are going to make it. On the postive sign we are signing younger prospects the last couple of years. Newly signed 20-year-olds are rarely prospects.

We’re missing an OF.

The latin rosters are much younger then usual- thats a good sign if nothing less then there are more chances to shake a prospect or two from them. Really what they should have been doing all along if they didn’t intend on going after bonus babies.
Latin players sure have gotten much bigger in the last year or two.

There is a box score from June 5th on the web site today. Highlight is the 16-year-old catcher going 3-4 with a HR. His average is now .667. Castro and Alvarez, the two new OF, are batting 1-2. Lugo started and pitched OK, but the pitching and fielding fell apart in the later innings for a 10-9 loss.

Those were only the new players on the roster listed in the post. Everybody else played last year. The real prospects are more likely to be among the new players, as players rarely play repeat seasons in the DSL and then become top prospects. Elizardo Ramirez did that a few years ago, but he is more the exception.

Bring up Valle now!
Seriously, thanks for the news. I’ve been wondering what was
going on there.
