Futures Game Discussion Thread

The Futures Game is today at 12:30 Eastern on ESPN2. If you’d like to share your thoughts while the game is happening, do it here. I’ll maybe do a little writeup tomorrow and hit on our players, but feel free to discuss the game here.

  1. MIKE Says:

looking forward to this game. here’s to great performances by Donald and Marson leading to olympic invites and carrasco leading to promotion to CBP.

  2. Turadad Says:

Marson and Donald starting, batting 8th and 9th.

  3. Turadad Says:

Oh yeah, some guy named Carrasco starting for the foreigners.

  4. phuturephillies Says:

oh boy. Donald with a throwing error.

    oops.

  5. Turadad Says:

I’m listening on XM. Rob Dibble described: “The feed from Donald was amazing!” on the last DP attempt.

  6. rocky Says:

The starter for usa look like he is a soft tosser

  7. frankrizzo Says:

I have never seen Marson play before but I have a couple of observations. He is not very quiet behind the plate. He moves around alot and snatches at the ball. He definitely needs to work on that if he wants to steal some strikes for major league pitchers. Also, he lobs the ball back at the pitcher. Alot of pitchers haye that beacuse it throws off their rhythm. If ANYONE can remember Javi Lopez, he was very still behind the plate and was very good at framing pitches.(Even though Maddux hated the way he called a game)That being said, Marson is only 22.

  8. Jeff Says:

So far, the US starter was referred to as “Richard Clayton” and the World starter was referred to as “Chris Carrascio.” Pretty amazing start to the broadcast…

  9. frankrizzo Says:

Carasco’s fastball really moves! Obviously he needs to work on his control but it is very difficult, if not impossible to teach movement on a fastball.

  10. phuturephillies Says:

Yeah, Marson could be quieter behind the plate, but he’s come a long way from when I saw him at Batavia.

  11. Turadad Says:

Marson being interviewed on XM. Sounds like he’s 14. Says he’s seeing the ball well now and is hopeful for a September callup.

  12. john from philly Says:

the worst coverage ive seen on espn 2. lets all listen to steve phillips talk about the mets, or miss half the game with erin andrews or scenes of new york like ive never seen it. i dont want to hear phillips, thorne, or the boston guy. i want to watch the game.

  13. kruker Says:

I’ll agree that Marson was a little fidgety behind the plate, but I’d blame that more on his being unfamiliar with his battery mate than indicative of his catching skills. Loved his at bat though, nice to see a Phillies catcher work the count.

  14. frankrizzo Says:

Is Jason Donald as goos as Bruntlett right now? I will give him a mulligan on that first doubleplay. He looks like he can play. He is probably gone at the deadline

  15. Kyle Says:

Donald looked really good, I thought. A nice play on the flip on the second double play, and positioned himself right on both the pick-offs. Hope he makes the Olympic team.

Carrasco was pretty good too, although a little wild.

Golson was the guy who looked horrible. Misplayed two balls, and had two awful at-bats.

  16. MIKE Says:

so carrasco offically gets the win?

  17. rocky Says:

I thought golson was a real good fielder.Didn’t see game. Did you say he missed too easy fly balls

  18. The Savior (Andrew) Says:

    Everyone looked good, sans Golson

  19. The Savior (Andrew) Says:

But remember, Golson has spent the last few weeks on the DL. This was his first game back, correct?

He was really thrown to the wolves or into the fire.

  20. phuturephillies Says:

Yeah, I don’t really think this game hurts Golson’s stock. I was only able to watch the first few innings, all around a fun experience for these guys I’m sure. But no front office exec is going to be swayed one way or another based on 3 innings of play from a regular or 1 IP from a pitcher.

  21. Catch 22 f/k/a H Man Says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Donald can play and I mean REALLY play (we know Marson can play – I don’t think that’s in dispute). The Phillies trade Donald at their peril.

  22. john from philly Says:

catch 22 im glad you agree with me. ive been fighting this one all year. i was surprised at carrascos lack of number of pitches, he is far behind happ, golson was as everyone here is saying, he cant tell a fastball from a bender. marson seemed composed. the phils staff hamels, kendrick, moyer, happ and hopefully burnett. they have in my opinion 2 untouchables marson and donald ( happ ) doesnt count hes already here. myers belongs in the pen!

  23. phillylou Says:

    no trades no trades
    carrasco to start
    eaton dl or months
marson can learn more from MOYER and COSTE
then he will ever learn in Pj FORBES’s house of horrors
6 or the PHILLIES best pitchers
four future guys and how many games
    under .500

  24. RodeoJones Says:

My grades, after watching the game on tape:

Donald – B (bad throw drops him from an A)
    Carrasco – B+ (a little wild)
Marson – C (nothing special there)
    Golson – F (two K’s, misplayed a ball)
