5 more profiles added

A massive thank you to Dave (and Ryan with an assist) for helping churn out all of the player profiles ahead of the 2011 season. Here are 5 more for your perusal. Zach Collier, Gauntlett Eldemire, Brian Pointer, Matt Rizzotti, and John Mayberry Jr. I ask that if you have feedback on a specific profile, you post it in the comments section of the appropriate profile, not here. If there is anyone missing, let me know. You can of course access all of the profiles at the top of the site by hovering your mouse over the profiles tab, and then finding the guy you are looking for.

Our goal is to only cover the legit prospects, as its more time consuming to make the profile pages for the fringiest of fringe guys, but if someone legit is missing, we’ll add it. Cesar Hernandez, Galvis, Santana, and Miguel Alvarez are on the to do list. It is my goal for the profiles to become a central part of this site, updating and maintaining them going forward. As the season starts, I will use some of my free time to search for news articles, pictures, and more videos for each prospect and add it to their page. You can help do that as well by posting any links/articles/videos you find in the comments section of each profile. I’ll have more on this as we move forward.

A quick word on the comments section here.

I’m going to write one very brief post on this. The comments on this post will be turned off. My hope is that this clears up any gray areas or uncertainties. I’m going to use bullet points here so it is really easy to follow.

* This is my website. I started this website. A few very generous people have volunteered hours of their time to provide content and make this site better.
* Because this is my website, I get to make the rules. No one is forcing you to read this website. You can choose, under your own free will, to either read or not read the site.
* By choosing to read the site, you understand that I make the rules, and I enforce the rules as I see fit.
* In the last week, I’ve had to remove more comments than I had to remove in the 4+ years the site has been operational prior to the last week.
* I have a very busy life. I do not have time to sit here for hours a day and weed through/edit/delete comments because people are being abusive and nasty. Compared to most outlets of the internet, the discourse here is very friendly. Which is a testament to 99% of the people who regularly contribute.
* Going forward, if you see someone causing trouble, just ignore them. By responding, you only give them fuel.
* Any comments that break the rules, ie, personal attacks, foul language, or anything else unsightly will be removed. Consider this your first and only warning. If you don’t like this policy, I don’t know what to tell you. I’m not one for censorship, but I’m also not one for people taking a dump on my lawn, and this website is my lawn. Or something.
* In short, please grow up and be respectful of the site and each other. If you can’t make your point without being insulting, derogatory or overtly nasty, then your point probably isn’t worth making.

Updated schedule

Hi everyone. My new laptop arrived today, which means my life should be restored later this evening. Here is the plan for the next few weeks.

This weekend: I will be updating and publishing a few more profiles prepared by Dave.
Monday: Introduction + prospects 1-3 of my top 30
Tuesday-Friday: 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 in my top 30 + any news that would arise
The following week: 16-18, 19-21, 22-24, 25-27, 28-30 + just missed the cut + sleepers + any news that comes up

Then we’ll be in full on spring training coverage mode. When games start and prospects make news, we’ll post that, as well as covering minor league re-assignments and box scores from the minor league games, when available.

If you are going to spring training and would like to contribute content for the site, send me an email to phuturephillies at gmail dot com and I will tell you how you can help.

Thanks again everyone, and I’m looking forward to rolling out my Top 30. I expect that, all told, it will be over 20,000 words this year. Another plus to breaking it up into 2 weeks worth of coverage.

Site re-organization

Hello all. Just a brief note on the site. I’m in the process of adding a number of new features to the site, starting with player profiles for all of our key prospects, with a huge assist from Dave and Ryan. As we finish these profiles, I wanted them to be easier to access, and more user friendly in terms of making updates. If you hover your mouse over the “Profiles” tab at the top of the site, you will now see new menus for hitters and pitchers, and then the individual profiles as well. My hope is this makes it easier to quickly navigate to a profile you’re looking for. In a similar manner, I’ve updated the draft picks section, creating separate pages for the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 draft picks. Going forward, I want to use this method for organizing new pages and content that will be continuously updated. I’m going to leave this post stuck to the top of the site for a while so everyone knows what is going on. Thanks for continuing to come back while we renovate the site!

Looking for another writer

Hello. As we approach the 2011 season, I want to make a number of improvements to the site, and the first and foremost on my list is completing a number of player profiles, as I’ve done a few and then haven’t had time to write any more. You can find all of the profiles here. I’m looking for someone with exceptional writing ability, who can follow the templates I’ve used for the already created profiles. I will go over all of the specifics in more detail at a later point. So if you are knowledgeable when it comes to prospects, you have good writing skills, and you want to lend a hand here, please send an email to phuturephillies at gmail dot com with the words “profile writer” or something similar in the title. Thanks in advance.

Scheduling updates

Hi everyone. I wanted to give a quick update as to my thought process going forward. The Rule 5 draft is December 9th, and my plan is to start the Reader Top 30 the next day. We’ll do one per day or so during the week. Factor in Christmas and stuff, and we’ll finish sometime in the middle of January. After we finish the Reader Top 30, I’ll unveil my top 30, in detail, and thanks to a suggestion in the comments, I’ll go one spot at a time. With each writeup, I’ll also include a poll question about the prospect, which should hopefully fuel more discussion. In the meantime, I plan on writing a few pieces, and I need to start collecting the data to plug into my spreadsheets to calculate the SONAR scores for 2010. So, look for more articles from me in the coming weeks/months, as well as the start of the Reader Top 30 and then a new approach to my Top 30. As always, thanks for reading!

Updated FAQ/Glossary/Primer

I’ve recently updated the outdated “Primer” page at the top of the site. I included the link to background information on the site, an overview of the 20-80 scale and scouting tools, and then there are a few more advanced baseball statistics that I like to reference here. Please check this page out, and then let me know if there are other topics or items that you think could be added into the page. My goal is to make that page the one stop reference for anyone new to the site. I also addressed the topic of donations. I’ve done this before, but it seems there is still confusion, as I get a few emails a week asking me about the process. The donation button on the right side of the page, which gets way too many clicks every day (in relation to the actual number of donations), directs you to paypal. All donations go toward maintaining and running the site. The site is ad-free, I make no money off of it, and everyone who contributes here does so on a voluntary basis.

I’m closing comments on this post, if you have feedback on the primer page, please post it in the comments section of that page. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. If you have any other questions, please do shoot me an email. Thanks.

Welcome to the new phuturephillies.com

This post will stay at the top of the website and serve as a quick guide for the re-design of the site. Take some time to explore and get accustomed to the new layout. If you’re finding the site for the first time, please read the site overview page by clicking here. If you have any other questions about the site, please send me an e-mail.

Site re-design

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m going to begin to overhaul the site, and you will notice lots of visual changes. Step 1 was changing to a different theme. I think this theme will work better because its cleaner and more sleek. Loyal reader “Rob H” was kind enough to design a custom header for the site, and I think it really is a unique and cool design. I’m going to be making lots of tweaks over the next few weeks/months, so if something seems out of place, it probably is. It may take some getting used to, but I think the cleaner look will end up making the site much more accessible and readable. So, hang with me while I make these design changes, and I hope everyone ultimately likes the finished product.

Update —>; I may as well put this here. I figured out two things tonight. I can remove the text ads that appear under posts, but its costs $30 for a year. I can also tweak the font size and some other aspects of the site, but that costs $15. I think I may hold off on one or both of these for now unless a few generous soles want to make a donation to cover the costs. Both features will eventually make their way onto the site.

Update #2 –> The ads should now be gone. If someone can confirm this, someone who noticed them before under the “possibly related posts” that would be great. Thanks.

It appears wordpress has started to place ads

It was brought to my attention that there are google ads being inserted into the “possibly related posts” section that shows up under the text of new entries. I don’t know when this started, but I think it is a recent phenomenon. As far as I know, there is no way for me to disable this. I didn’t notice it because I use ad-blocking extensions to block this crappy ads. I’m going to look for solutions to get rid of these ads, but because wordpress is a free hosting site, I don’t think I can get rid of them. For now, I suggest doing the following

If you use Firefox, install Ad Block or something similar

If you use Google Chrome (which is my browser of choice), also has Ad Block.
If I come up with something else, I’ll let you know.
