Per Matt Gelb and Todd Zolecki on twitter (if someone can copy/paste the link, I’ll add it here), Zach Collier was suspended 50 games for a positive amphetamine test. This is a pretty big blow, as Collier had experienced an excellent bouneback season after missing all of 2010 through injury. Lets save the character assassinations and over the top overreactions to the news for another time, but this isn’t a great development.

Zach Collier done for the season
Collier, as you know, has been dealing with a hand/wrist injury for the last few months, and according to this article, he is now being ruled out for the season. Collier came out strong after being selected in the compensation round in 2008, but he struggled last season, and 2010 now goes down as a lost season. Collier doesn’t turn 20 until September, so time is still on his side, but he needs at bats, and losing an entire season is a big blow. Provided he comes back fully healthy in 2011, he’ll be back at Lakewood at age 20, which is just fine, but he desperately needs to log 500+ PA in 2011 to get back on the developmental track.
Double-Teamed: Love from BA and BP
First off, apologies for having not cranked out A Closer Look piece in a little bit, though big thanks to governator for his interesting piece on Matt German in the meantime. Not sure if I’ll have a chance to write anything before I head on vacation this weekend, but I’ll definitely be back at it when I get back.

4 Phillies make the GCL Top 20
I’ll be doing something similar to what BA does, highlighting the 20 best prospects in each league, but they beat me to the punch on the GCL list. Which is ok, because mine is likely to look much different. Anyway, today is the GCL, and the Phillies are well represented.
