Reading ended its season at 70-71, in 5th place in the Southern division, 11.5 games out of first with a very bad taste in their mouth after getting destroyed over the weekend by last place Harrisburg. Taking a final look at players among the league leaaders, Greg Jacobs was 5th in batting avergage (.310), first in slugging %(.539), 7th in RBI’s (83), 8th in homers (21)6th in hits (143), and 2nd in doubles (39). Clearwater Threshers Post Season Begins Tuesday
![]() |
The Clearwater Threshers clinched their first playoff berth since 1999 on Saturday night by sweeping a double header against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Andrew Carpenter threw six innings of one-hit baseball in the first game with his only hit allowed being a home run as the Threshers won the first game 11-1. In the second game of the night Anthony Bastardo got his first start for the Threshers after being promoted from Lakewood. Bastardo gave up four runs on five hits with 12 ks and three walks in the game.
Word came down in the top of the fifth inning of the second game that both Dunedin and Tampa had lost their games, so a Threshers win would clinch their playoff berth. At that point the score was tied 4-4 so the game became crucial for the Threshers. The team went on to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-4, but Lakeland made it interesting in the final frame picking up a run and getting two base runners before the Threshers could seal a victory with the 6-5 margin. DSL Postseason Report
The 2007 DSL Phillies had an amazing season, winning its division on the strength of an unprecedented 22-game winning streak before losing their final game. In one 35-game stretch the DSL Phillies went 32-3. For the season the Phillies went 45-18 and won their division by 4 games over the Athletics 1 squad. Their .714 winning percentage was the 3rd best in the entire DSL, though the team lost their playoff series against the Angels 2 games to 1.
Ottawa Lynx Week Twenty
Week twenty began with a rain out that really shouldn’t have been and two loses which could have easily been wins. It rained Friday fairly heavy for awhile during the day and right up until close to game time but the field at Lynx Stadium drains very well. An examination of the forecast that indicated more heavy storms were on the way lead the umpiring crew to cancel the game with Pawtucket with no makeup game being scheduled. However, the additional rains never came and the sun broke through the clouds. No game, sunshine everywhere and the fans left wondering why. Strangely similar to the first two games against Buffalo. Eerily similar to the way the 2007 season has gone for Ottawa. If something could go wrong, it usually does.

DSL Phillies riding 19 game winning streak
The DSL Phillies have won 19 straight games….that’s pretty impressive. Baseball America gave the team a little press here, and also included notes that Freddy Galvis is done for the season after dislocating his shoulder. The article also mentions RHP Freddy Ballestas, who appears to be the best Phillies pitching prospect in the VSL, saying his fastball is up in the 91-94 range and he’s featuring a solid breaking ball as well. I will let andyb talk more about our prospects in the VSL/DSL, but I’m going to assume that Ballestas will be brought stateside next year.
VSL Phillies Season Wrapup – Top Prospects
The VSL Phillies finished their 2007 a little while ago. The team was a little younger than in past years and consequently struggled a little early in the season after last year’s championships. This year the team finished a respectable 36-31, finishing in 4th place 11.5 games behind the Pirates (who fielded a very old squad). The Phillies were about average for the league in age, though they had several younger prospects with notable performances. Continue reading VSL Phillies Season Wrapup – Top Prospects
Ottawa Lynx Week Nineteen
Ottawa began week nineteen on a two game winning streak, (doesn’t sound like much but it had been awhile since they’d won back to back), and had two remaining games in Buffalo before a brief two game series in Rochester. Game one saw the streak end 10-1 but the game was closer than it looked until the eighth inning when the Bisons scored four times off of Lynx reliever Joe Besinius. Although Lynx starter John Ennis, (4-4), wasn’t lights out, he left the game having allowed five runs, (four earned), with Ottawa trailing 5-1 and not completely out of the game yet. Bisons starter Jeffrey Harris, (6-7), pitched seven innings and allowed only four Ottawa hits and one run and the Buffalo pen held the Lynx scoreless over the final two innings.
