AFL Wrap-Up

The AFL season came to a close on Saturday with RPhils manager Dusty Wathan’s Peoria Javelinas taking down Matt Williams’ Salt River Rafters 4-3, after a controversial play that would have tied the game in the 7th.

11-8-2013 AFL Update

Big news of the week – Cody Asche earned praise from a scout on Twitter…for his defense.  Wild.

As usual, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Justin Friend continues to get the job done.  We’ll see what he can do in AAA next season, I imagine.  Continue reading 11-8-2013 AFL Update

11-2-2013 AFL Update

A reminder to anyone interested, the AFL Rising Stars Game is tonight.  It’s on MLB Network at 8pm EST for those properly-cabled amongst you.  I tried to figure if it was going to be streaming but I can’t tell, (might be), and it looks like it’s not on MLB.TV or MiLB.TV, at least according to their website schedules for today.

Not much to write home about on the stat front – Jay Johnson had a couple nice outings, and Tommy Joseph’s been on base in 4 of his 5 games since coming back from the flu.

As usual, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Cesar Hernandez is running wild in Venezuela.  7/8 on steal attempts. Continue reading 11-2-2013 AFL Update

10-29-2013 AFL Update

Zach Collier is really hitting well out there in AZ.  3 multi-hit games out of his last 5, and really bruising some right-handed pitching.  And Tommy Joseph back in action after a week off with the flu, as was first reported (I think) by Jay Floyd over at Phoulballz.com.

Anyway, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Darin Ruf is killing him some baseballs.  His ISO is .500 (in a SSS of 50 ABs).  Even still…killing baseballs.  Continue reading 10-29-2013 AFL Update

10-22-2013 AFL Update

About 2 weeks into the AFL season now.  Of note is Kyle Simon’s nice outing yesterday.  Looks like he’ll be used as a starter every fifth day.  Will be interesting to see how the league handles him (or the top of the league’s lineups, anyway), when they get to see him a second time around in the same game. He was not great with the Baltimore org as a starter in 2012, and was thriving as a reliever in Reading.

Anyway, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Looks like a handful more guys are playing than were last time I checked.  Lisalverto Bonilla is back in action, which is a good thing.  Unfortunately, I am pretty sure Domingo Santana is not Phils property, despite being on that website. 10-18-2013 AFL Update

More than a week into the AFL season, and Cody Ashce continues to rake.  It’s like he’s back in Clearwater with those numbers.

Anyway, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Good place to go check in on Freddy Galvis and Darin Ruf and Tyson Gillies, among others.  Just ignore Justin Friend’s 27.00 ERA.  Give him a full year, and it’ll come down to 0.27.  Trust me.

Also of note, the AFL guys have new photos.  Which means one important thing: Kyle Simon’s mustache. Continue reading 10-18-2013 AFL Update

10-12-2013 AFL Update

After a couple games, you can see that all of the Phillies prospects have played.  Cody Asche had a nice game in there.  Kyle Simon didn’t really have a great one last night.  Which is a mild understatement.  Come to think of it, calling that a mild understatement is a mild understatement.  And so forth.

Arizona Fall League Kicks Off Today

As most of you know, seven Phillies minor leaguers will participate in the Arizona Fall League this year as members of the Peoria Javelinas.  The list includes four Reading relievers, and three interesting position players: C Tommy Joseph, 3B Cody Asche, OF Zach Collier, LHP Jay Johnson and RHPs Colby Shreve, Tyler Knigge and Kyle Simon.

DSL 2012 Midseason Update

This year’s DSL Phillies are off to a good start with a 16-13 record in their first 29 games, good for a share of 2nd place 4.0 games behind the Yankees in the BC South division.  While this year’s Phillies team has no known high bonus players on their roster, they are holding their own with a mostly age appropriate roster.  The average age on offense is 18.7 (compared to the league average of 18.5) and on defense is 19.0 (compared to the league average of 18.9).

The Phillies recently made 5 additional Latin American signings including 2 high profile Dominican players.  OF Jose Pujols is a power hitter out of the Domingo Santana mold ($540K) and C Deivi Grullon ($575K) is a catcher with a strong arm and other tools.  Look for both Pujols and Grullon to make their debut next year either at GCL or in the DSL, depending on how their offseason development progresses. VSL 2012 Midseason Update

With the beginning of July we are now over half of the way through the 2012 VSL season.  It has been a strange season for the Phillies entry who have dominated the league going 28-14.  The team has a 2.41 ERA overall and a .779 OPS.  They are in first place by 1.5 games.  With all that, however, it is difficult to determine whether the team has any real prospects.  The offense is certainly young, though the best performances have come from older players.  The pitching has dominated though also led by strong performances from the older players.  In spite of these dominant performances it is very possible that the Phillies have a better group of older players than the other teams in the 4-team league.
