GCL Phillies; July 3, 2014

The humidity was a little lower than it had been during the past 10 days, so I went to the Complex to watch the GCL game between the Phillies and the Braves.  Yoel Mecias got his third rehab start.  He pitched 5 uninspiring innings.  His fastball maxxed out at 87 mph.  By the third inning, he had lost the ability to throw it consistently for strikes and relied heavily on his 82-83 mph changeup.  The Braves bunched 6 hits and a walk into the third and fourth innings to score 3 runs.  He threw 49 strikes in his 78 pitches.  His final line was –

Darrin Ruf and Wil Nieves both hit line drive singles in the first inning with 2 outs.  Continue reading GCL Phillies; July 3, 2014

Threshers; July 2, 2014

The Threshers’ offense exploded Wednesday night.  They collected 15 hits, of which 6 were XBH including a triple and 3 home runs.  They scored in each of the first 4 innings as the ran out to a 10-1 lead.  They maintained their advantage to win 11-5 against the Dunedin Blue Jays. Threshers; July 1, 2014

The Phillies first round pick and number 7 overall, Aaron Nola, made his home debut against the Dunedin Blue Jays Tuesday night.  The crowd of 3,394 was treated to a pitchers’ duel in a game the Threshers’ lost 1-0.

Nola made his FSL debut last Monday in Lakeland.  He was on a 50 pitch limit that night.  He started Tuesday on an unknown pitch limit, but a 5-inning limit. Continue reading Threshers; July 1, 2014

Threshers; June 29, 2014

Miguel Gonzalez threw 14 pitches in a relief appearance today, his first back-to-back appearances since restarting his rehab as a reliever.  It was reported that his fastball peaked at 95-96 mph Saturday night.  He followed that up with 92-94 mph on 10 of his 11 fastballs on Sunday.  One fastball dipped to 91.  He threw 3 off-speed pitches, two 77 mph curve balls and an 81 mph slider(?).  The first batter fell behind 0-2 and fouled off a pitch before hitting a soft cue shot that found space between Art Charles and Angelo Mora on the right side.  It barely reached the outfield grass.  Gonzalez struck out the next batter after falling behind 2-0.  The third batter lined a ball back through the box that Gonzalez grabbed between his ankles.  He easily doubled up the runner off first. First Place Threshers!!! June 21, 2014

The Threshers beat the Lakeland Flying Tigers 5-4 Saturday night to break a 6-way tie for first.  Although they still remain in a 3-way tie, they are above .500 for the first time this season.

Colin Kleven started and struggled through the first two innings.  He gave up 3 runs in a 31-pitch first inning on 3 hits and a hit batsman.  He escaped a 25-pitch, bases loaded situation in the second inning where he allowed 1 hit, a walk, and hit two more batters.  A 6-4-3 double play early in the inning kept the Tigers off the board.  Kleven took control and retired 9 of the next 10 batters.  The only Tiger to reach base did so on an error by JP Crawford.  Kleven left the game after five innings trailing 3-2. GCL Phillies; June 21, 2014

The GCL Phillies posted a 6-1 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays at the Carpenter Complex today.  Jason Marquis, on rehab since signing a minor league contact on June 4th, started and threw 5 shutout innings.  He overpowered the young Jays allowing 5 singles, and 1 base on balls while striking out seven.  He threw around 60 pitches before being lifted to allow some of the GCL relievers to get some work.  Marquis threw two simulated innings on an adjacent field against some bench players to get his pitch count up to ninety. Threshers reach .500!!! June 20, 2014

The Threshers beat the Dunedin Blue Jays 6-5 to even their record at 1-1 in the second half of the FSL North Division.   During the game a top prospect reached base for the first time in his FSL career, a refugee rehabber took the mound for the first time in a few weeks, a batter was called out on rare type of interference call on a strike out, and the game ended on a rare double play on a single to the outfield. GCL Phillies; June 20, 2014

The GCL Phillies opened with a 7-3 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays.  Luis Morales got the start and pitched 3.1 innings.  Matt Hockenberry pitched 2.2 innings and got the win.  Brandon Liebrandt pitched the final 3 innings and got the save.

I got to the field a little late and saw that Chris King (StatsKing) from BP was in the tower scoring the game, so I didn’t bother to score it myself, just took notes.

The roster that was posted this morning included 19 pitchers (No Aaron Nola) , 3 catchers (including Jake Sweaney), 8 infielders, and 4 outfielders (including 2 who had been injured all of XST – Carlos Duran and Gustavo Martinez).  The first thing I did was take role.  Everybody who was listed on the roster was in attendance.  So was Larry Greene, who was rehabbing in left field.  Aaron Nola was in uniform and on the bench.  More on Nola later. Crawford Debuts with Threshers; June 19, 2014

Charlie Manuel and Dallas Green were in the stands when JP Crawford made his long awaited debut with the Clearwater Threshers Thursday evening in Dunedin.  It was not a performance he, or they, will want to remember.  JP went 0 for 4 with 3 strike outs.  He also commited 2 fielding errors.

Crawford’s first chance came in the second inning when he was the pivot for a 4-6-3 double play.  His next 2 chances came with 2 outs in the third inning.  Dwight Smith Jr., rolled a ground ball slowly toward short.  Crafword charged to get the speedy Smith, but didn’t get his glove down and the ball rolled under it.  The next batter popped up to left toward the line.  The left fielder, Brian Short, should have taken charge.  Instead, he let Crawford attempt the catch.  Looking back into the sun with his body contorted Crawford saw the ball pop out of his glove for his second error.

Crawford’s next chance didn’t occur until the eighth inning.  With one out and a runner on first, he bobbled a double play ball but recovered to get the force at second.  His last chance came in the ninth inning with the score tied, one out, and a runner on first.  The runner broke for second and the batter hit a ball to second baseman KC Serna.  He fielded the ball and threw to Crawford at the second base bag.  Crawford, the runner, and the ball all arrived at the same time.  Crawford accepted the toss and completed the throw to first to get the batter.  This play had the potential to be a train wreck.  That the base ump ruled the runner safe at second shows how close they came to a collision.  But Crawford hung in there to make the catch and relay the throw to first.  A single to shallow center by the next batter ended the game.

Roman Quinn had a good defensive game.  In the first inning, he covered a lot of ground into left center to take a fly ball away from Short.  The next batter tripled on the same trajectory but much deeper.  Quinn closed ground again but pulled up to field the carom off the wall when he realized he wouldn’t get to the ball.  He made a strong throw in to the cut off man, on the fly, no bounce.  His second chance was a routine fly ball in the fifth inning.  His next chance came in the eighth inning on a drive to  deep right center field.  Quinn ran it down on the warning track as he approached the wall.  In the ninth he fielded the game winning single and attempted to throw home.  The runner had too good a jump and scored standing up.  Quinn’s throw was late, but that didn’t matter.  What I did notice was that it was considerably off line.  I think he was just trying to put extra on a throw that had no chance of getting the runner.

Matt Boyd pitched for the Jays.  He owned the Threshers earlier this year.  In two starts, he shut them out over 15 innings allowing 7 hits, 0 walks, and striking out 17.  After his 8 inning, 2-hit, 12 K effort against the Threshers on April 25th, Boyd was called up to AA.  So, he’s back in the FSL and starting the second half.  Tonight, the Threshers hit him pretty good.  He was pulled after facing 2 batters in the 5th inning.  He had allowed 7 hits, 3 runs (1 earned), 2 walks, while striking out six.

Most of the offense came from the bottom of the order.  Harold Martinez went 3-4 with 2 runs scored.  Gabriel Lino went 2-4.  Brian Pointer went 4-4 with a double, 2 RBIs, and a run scored.  Quinn went 2-3 from the leadoff spot and went 2-3 with a walk and an RBI.  He had an infield single and a ground ball up the middle that tied the game.

Miguel Nunez started and pitched well for 6 innings allowing 3 hits and a walk.  He came undone in the 7th inning.  He left with a 3-2 lead and 2 runners on base.  Ramon Oviedo came in and retired 2 conscutive batters to end the inning – but not until after  a sac bunt, intentional walk (after he threw 3 consecutive balls), infield single, and single allowed the 2 inherited runners to score.

When are these kids going to learn not to walk batters.  Nunez started the 7th with a walk.  Dan Child, who started the 9th inning, walked his second batter.  Both walks scored.  I can’t wait to see if Nola’s control carries over from college.

GCL starts tomorrow at noon in Dunedin.  Threshers/Jays continue their series in Clearwater Friday night.  Hunks of Funk and Black Honkeys in concert after the game.

Threshers; June 17, 2014

Jeb Stefan pushed Roman Quinn out of the first paragraph Tuesday with six scoreless innings.  The righty needed 98 pitches and threw 62 strikes.  He scattered 7 hits and walked 2 batters.  He also matched his season high with 5 strike outs.  It was a gritty performance by Stefan.  He was greeted by a leadoff single by the Tigers’ Chad Wright.  He was quickly erased on Stefan’s first ground ball double play of the season.  Stefan pitched out of a bases loaded, 2-out situation in the 2nd inning.  In the 3rd inning, Wright led off with another single, but was caught stealing by Gabriel Lino.  Stefan got 2 quick outs in the 4th inning before escaping another bases loaded situation.  His 5th and 6 innings were more routine with one hit and 3 strike outs.  He was strong in a 1-2-3 6th inning.  He started all 3 batters off with first pitch strikes and recorded 2 of his 5 strike outs in his last inning.  Continue reading Threshers; June 17, 2014
