Around the System–Relief Pitchers, Lower Half

Lakewood-Lendy Castillo, 22, 6 games (1 start), 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA; 11.2 IP 11H 3BB 17K; 1.25 GO/AO; .244 opp. avg., 1.20 WHIP; 13.1K/9.  Still very early in the season for Castillo, who has looked very good so far.

Mario Hollands, 22, 6-4 with a 4.10 ERA; 18 games (12 starts); 74.2IP 88H 23BB 58K; 1.48 WHIP; 1.05 GO/AO; .294 opp. avg., 2.8BB/9; 7.0K/9; .287 vs. LH, .298 vs. RH, .281 with RISP; 6 games as a reliever, 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 12.1 innings. After a solid start of the year as a starter, Holland went thru a deep slump and now has come out of it as a reliever.  Since he began relief work, has looked very good. Worley Optioned

After a very strong performance against the Marlins (7 shutout innings), the Phils optioned Vance Worley to AAA Lehigh Valley. The move was made to keep Worley pitching on a regular five day schedule. He likely will start for Lehigh Valley on Saturday and come back after the all star break to pitch for the Phillies against the Mets.

John Mayberry Jr., is likely to be called up to take Worley’s roster spot according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lehigh Valley

Michael Schwimer, 25, 32 games, 5-0 with a 1.89 ERA; 5 saves, 47.2IP; 33H 17BB 59K; 3 HR allowed, 1.04 WHIP; 3.2BB/9, 11.1K/9; 0.68 GO/AO; .190 opp. avg., .282 vs. LH, .126 vs. RH, .157 with RISP; 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA since May 1.  Has been simply awesome, and should be called up in  September, if not sooner.

Mike Zagurski, 28, 24 games, 2-0 with a 1.95 ERA, 10 saves, 27.2IP 24H 16BB 41K; 1.19 GO/AO; .250 opp. avg., 5.2BB/9, 13.3K/9; .267 vs LH, .242 vs. RH, .192 with RISP; 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA since May 1.  Has been very good at this level but his reverse splits and inconsistent control work against him for a callup. Around the Systen, Starters, Lower Half

Lakewood–David Buchanan, 22, 15 starts, 8-5 with a 3.48 ERA; 93 IP 88H 24BB 59K; 1.20 WHIP; 5 HR allowed, .253 vs. LH, .254 vs. RH, 1.09 GO/AO; .254 opp. avg.,.295 with RISP; 5-5 with a 4.78 ERA since May 1.  After coming out of the gate very strong, Buchanan has settled back down to put up fairly pedestrian numbers over his last 10 starts.

Jesse Biddle, 19, 15 starts, 3-6 with a 3.55 ERA; 78.2IP 66H 42BB 74K; 1.37 WHIP; 4.8BB/9; 8.5K/9; 0.85 GO/AO; .229 opp. avg., 214 vs. LH, .233 vs. RH, .243 with RISP; 3-3 with a 2.60 ERA since May 1.  Has looked very good, however, walks will be a real issue if they continue at this rate.

Garrett CLaypool,22, 17 games (13 starts); 3-3 with a 3.16 ERA; 79.2IP 61H 29BB 93K, 10 HR allowed; 1.13 WHIP; 0.54 GO/AO; .211 opp. avg; 3.2BB/9; 10.5K/9; .223 vs. LH, .201 vs. RH, .170 with RISP; 1-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 11 starts since June 1.  CLaypool has performed well. Hot or Not 1 July 2011

A few observations this week: Joe Savery showing up on both the “hot” pitcher list, and “not” hitter list, Singleton on top of the hot hitter list again; Maikel Franco making people notice in Williamsport and the recent struggles of Cody Overbeck and Matt Rizzotti.

Around the System–Starting Pitching, Top Half

A look at the Starting Pitching for the top half of the organization.  Look for the report on the lower half (Lakewood, Williamsport, and GCL at the end of the week)

Lehigh Valley

Brian Bass, 29, 4-5 with a 4.54 ERA in 15 starts; 85.1 IP 97H 33BB 49K; 9 HR allowed, 1.52 WHIP, 2.79 GO/AO; .289 opp. avg., .292 vs. LH, .286 vs. RH; .263 with RISP; Has gone at least 6 innings in each of his last nine starts.  The ‘Pigs rotation has been decimated by injury and call ups and Bass has been the one constant.  Constant in the sense that he has gone out there every five days.  Some good, some bad, and some ugly.
