Here’s a new Phillies Discussion.

The Phillies’ recent schedule pitted them against 4 of the 8 worst teams in the MLB – Detroit (.465), Kansas City (.400), Cincinnati (.459), and the Mets (.420).  They went an unsatisfying 6-6 against those teams.

The Phillies came out of the break and started Nola, Luzardo, and Rangel.  I guess they are saving Wheeler and Sanchez for the Dodgers series.  I think they would have been better off starting them against the teams the Phillies have an actual chance of beating.  Of course, one run is not likely to win you many games.

    2. They have a tough schedule, which may bring some tension to the final stretch. I like it for keeping them playoff ready, vs the team that is sitting, resting. Will see what the deadline brings in the meantime

  3. Guys. Great comments on your connections to the Delaware Valley. I know the kids are having a great time. They sent me lots of pictures. I was amazed they were able to be on the field. Pacho, Lazar, and Duran all gave my grandson an autograph on his baseball. I sent several pics to Ruff and Romus. Today they get to see the Dodgers though it will not be Ohtani on the mound. Then back to Hoosierville.

    The last 2 games kind of show you the difference between baseball and other sports. Basically, the same players. 6-1 games. As the saying goes and I am sure Rocco has heard it, you are only as good as the next day starting pitcher. Both of these games showed that.

    It is really difficult to win if you are down so many runs so early in a game. 5th starter and at least 1 solid BP guy I think is a must. Afraid the bats are what they are going to be. Feast or famine as Ben says.

    Jim. I agree on Turner. For me and this goes back to his Nats days. He is always moving so his timing has to be perfect. Plus, maybe my tv is skewed but it seems the Phillies take so many pitches right down the middle and then swing at ones 6 inches or ones nowhere near the plate. Announcers always talk about guys picking up the spin of the ball. Phillies leave some room for concern in this area. Again, maybe it is my tv. I do not think you are going to see much difference on the hitting front.

    The 3 starting aces and Duran plus hopefully at least one and maybe 2 more BP guys will take them as far as they go. I was thinking overnight if the Phillies only win 1 of 3 games it will be 76 wins. Not good enough. If they win 31 of the 62 left it is 86. Will that be good enough? Cubs look solid now. Pirates, Marlins and maybe Dbacks and Nats are lurking. How many wins will it take.? Best shot may be to catch the Braves.

    Rocco. You should find the kids and buy them lunch. They went to Chickie’s and Pete on Saturday. They have to be staying close to the stadium. They were there like at 10:30 yesterday. I am sure they will get there early again if they are allowed to do so. Look for a little guy with his Green Phillies hat.

      Im speculating but my comment was before Keller’s injury. He was potential trade bait before, but the FO im o removed him the prospect capital for now. See how he does before the deadline. If he holds his own, he stays. If not, he goes back into the prospect capital at a lower value. It’ll be interesting. I. f this team survived Gregory Soto’s near 10%+ walk rate, i think he’ll be fine.

      On the A’s catcher, good potential trade find, then flip JT to the Yankees. The money works for now too. The money saved could go to add an arm. Now that said, i think we underestimate how important JT is to the staff, so it’s not going to happen. Not to mention he has a no trade clause (Could be wrong but I googled it, 10/5 rights i believe) if the has a NTC, he’s not going imho.

      1. I see a world where the Phillies could trade for Langeliers without moving on from JT. This would require them to put Schwarber in LF against lefties and have JT on the bench against righties:

        Quite similar to how the Braves handled the Murphy / D’Arnaud platoon.

    2. it was decided last night to bring him up – it was due to the work bullpen has endured – it may be a short stay but I’m a big McFarlane fan so hopefully he does well and can stick there. Their preference was not to bring him to the show yet whether you choose to believe that or not.

      2. I don’t think anyone doubts that that was their preference. The question is why? Why not bring up a guy who throws 102 and has had dominant K rates in the minors? Unless they obviously are concerned if he is ready.

  7. I think Wood has a chance to be very good. He is going to give up a HR here and there. I like his demeanor on the mound. He goes after the hitters.

    This is going to be a tough 9 game stretch so need all hands-on deck. Hope the bats can find some hits and runs these next few series.

  9. With the schedule being demanding post all star game, it doesn’t help dropping two of three to the Mets. I applaud Rangel for his perseverance toiling in the minors but he is not a major league starter. This team cannot give up every fifth start.

    I’d like to see them give the other Keller pitching at LHV a shot. It can’t be any worse than what they are getting and have gotten from the other starters who have pitched in those previous games. Painter and TyWin have left the team in a precarious situation.

    1. Brian Keller, yes it’s worth giving him a shot now as options are limited. He’s had an interesting resume with some minor league success, a no hitter, a trip to Japan, and TJ surgery. He seems to be throwing the ball well right now. Can he be worse than Rangel?

  10. Watching the game yesterday from the stands – a beautiful day despite the lousy outcome – I was struck by the similarity between Painter and Rangel. Both pitchers get a quick 0-2 or 1-2 count on the batter ; batter then fouls off 4 or 5 pitches ; then both pitchers end up in a 3-2 count ; they then either walk the batter or the hitter gets a bloop hit by putting the ball in play. Wash, rinse, and repeat to the following hitters. Neither pitcher has the ability today to put batters away when they have them down in the count. It begs the question what is that final ingredient that the good pitchers have to just “close out” the at bat ? Can that be taught ?

      1. Agreed!

        Excited about McFarlane – he is chock full of potential. I don’t blame the Phillies one bit for giving him a go now – if he can stick, that’s really going to help ease the prospect load going out at the trade deadline.

        And Renteria – I mean, I guess we have to give this a little time, but he’s looking the like our great white whale – the prospect we’ve been waiting for for decades. No pressure, lol!

  13. Ahh at this point do not trade any prospects. Same infield that is just not good enough to get through a playoff run to NLCS. Can you beat any of the NL Division leaders where there will be at least one misplay at SS. Can remember when Phil’s played Dodgers and big red machine back in 70s and those teams pounced all over any little mistake by Phils.

  15. Including today’s first inning, updated list of the most GIDP since 2021:

    Vlad Guerrero 115

    Pete Alonso 101

    Alec Bohm 100

    Josh Bell 100

    I don’t think Bohm will catch Vladdy, but second place is doable.

    1. Clarification: Bohm has achieved his 100 GIDP in 3157 plate appearances, meaning he has had a GIDP every 31.57 plate appearances. Vladdy has done his 115 GIDP in 3862 plate appearances, for a GIDP every 33.58 plate appearances. So Bohm has him beat in how frequently he grounds into a double play.

      Similarly, Alonso has 3817 plate appearances (so a GIDP every 37.79 plate appearances), and Josh Bell has 3355 plate appearances (so a GIDP every 33.55 plate appearances).

      In other words, Bohm is the champion! If you need someone to ground into a double play, he’s the best. He just needs more plate appearances to pull ahead of Vladdy.

      1. And the more embarrassing part of that stat… all of those hitters are above average (or better) contributors and hit for power.

        In that time frame;

        Bell: 120 HRs, 110 wRC+

        Alonso: 216 HRs, 131 wRC+

        Guerrero: 165 HRs, 139 wRC+

        Bohm: 78 HRs, 97 wRC+

        I don’t get how he keeps convincing managers that he’s good enough to hit in the middle of the order.

    2. Yeah. It is bad. And likely to get worse as he ages. He clearly needs to be moved to an OF spot. I think that he could be a plus OF but needs reps. Hard move to do mid season.

      Then of course the next question is, who is SS? Could we move Stott to SS? Edmundo? Could we trade for Bo Bichette? Move him to SS and Turner to RF?

  17. Stott is another batter (hitter?) I have issue with. Always takes first pitch down the middle then strikes out on a pitch out of the zone. Like his K in the 4th, pitch was high by about a foot. SMH.

    1. In years past I didn’t mind that from Stott because historically he’s been really good about seeing a lot of pitches while walking a decent amount and keeping strikeouts fairly low.

      But his strikeouts have ticked up and his walks down this year, so I agree it’s time to change up his approach to make pitchers more cautious of him.

  19. Listening to Tommy Edman during the game, I realized if he could make the switch to third…….why not Turner next season. All it is a matter of instincts for the most part……and of course there is the charge in on a trickler or bunt and making the throw over to first base.

      2. Keep an eye on Cleveland’s Bryan Rocchio. His glove has always been excellent, but since late last year he’s been hitting. Cleveland is loaded with infield prospects. I think their top one is SS. Not sure if we have anything to interest them in a trade, though.

        1. Bryan Rincon in AA is Rocchio 2.0. I get that hes not ready yet but it would be kind of funny to trade for a guy when we have a very similar player who will be ready in a year or two

          1. I agree. Rincon’s progress has been a bit story the front office has been strangely quiet about. Rocchio has, however, proven it in the bigs, including the playoffs.

Well it was done June 5th….with an 8 week recovery period, so another two weeks we should have a better idea how he is doing……it was a minimally invasive spinal procedure called a radiofrequency ablation to treat facet inflammation in his lumbar spine. The outpatient treatment “zaps” nerves-assume sciatica ..prevents them from sending pain signals to the brain, allowing him to rehabilitate. We all know older guys who suffer with this..my firend had it done….did not work …he was 82 however, and like ,ost older guys, arthritis is a favtor in the stenosis…and usually it is temporary relief. Think Eagles center Cam Jurgens had it done Feb 2025 and he played last season, so can be possible Miller will be back playing by the end of August sometime. They will take it slow.

            2. I read the Inquirer article and had a few thoughts after I did.

              First, boy, this sounds like a difficult situation – usually, articles like this say that a guy will get a procedure and be back to normal or close to normal in a specified period of time. That article said nothing of the kind, which was pretty disconcerting, although it did imply that these injuries tend to work themselves out if caught early and addressed.

              Second, they said the procedure to blunt the nerves was only temporary, which leaves the obvious question of whether this is a chronic condition. The article left that question hanging quite a bit (and, to me, implied that was possible), although my overall impression was that the ablation was done to relieve pain to open a window of time where rehabilitation work can be done to take care of the problem on a permanent basis.

              But, overall, the process, the prognosis and the path forward was one of the more vague and confusing things I’ve ever read about an athlete’s physical problem, and I don’t think it’s because the writer was doing a poor job at explaining the problem and possible solutions.

  21. Good thing Phillies win 10-7. Feast last night on Dodgers 2nd line pitchers. Romus mentioned to me Phillies inability to score on good pitchers. Maybe Phillies catch break this series. No Ohtani, No Snell, No Yamamoto, No Glasnow, No Sasaki. Dodgers have lots of pitchers.

    Turner is better going to his right for backhand. But it must be focus on these others. If I am a 12U, 14U, 16U coach I would want my SS to field those 4 he missed last night. One in front of 2nd the most difficult but makeable. Had He missed it Stott was right there to field it and step on 2nd.

    At least last night he did as tv guys said. Knock in more than you let in. Think it was 5-3 last night. Also, couple years ago one of the national guys, either Smoltz or Cone one night made comment that today it is really difficult to make an error in MLB these days. Kruk always references it as well when someone makes a lousy play on a ball that should have been made.

    Thought of this the other day. In a game what positions have the highest number of chances per game. My guess is SS and 2B but not sure. Last night Turner missed 4 and I remember he made 2 at least. That is 6 chances. I just wonder what the % may be.

    Ruff says Turner new LF, Stott SS, who is on 2B? Turner must get better if Phillies are to be successful. Not going to score 10 runs every game.

    1. The annoying thing about that ball he botched in front of second base was they called it a hit because of the fast runner… but he could have just held onto the ball and tagged second for the out instead. The runner going to second was barely in frame by the time he booted it.

  23. The Dodgers are really good because of their depth. When you can replace Smith with Rushing and have Edman start and be able to line Muncy up for a key pinch hit the way Roberts did you begin to see why they are so far ahead of everyone else.

    I don’t think anything irks me more in baseball than a lead off walk when you have a 10-4 lead…

    I’d rather a solo HR than a walk because everyone knows a come back of that nature requires baserunners.

  24. The Brewers always seem to do more with less much like the Rays. Its interesting that the Cubs thought the magic was in Counsel and paid him a ridiculous sum. The Mets thought it was in the GM and paid Stern a ridiculous sum of $10 million over 5 years.

    LOL the Brewers just roll on. Perhaps its something else.

  25. Wasn’t the 9th inning last night a perfect time for Macfarlane to get his feet wet? Was it that he hadn’t gotten to Philly yet? They can’t keep sending guys like Shugart out there even with a giant lead. The one good thing was that Alvarado had a clean inning.

    2. it was the perfect time to put him in. it could have gotten his feet wet and we could have seen what he can do. plus, if he gives up 2 runs, you pull him for Duran like they did with Shugart. And nobody around the league is going to be like “well, we like the kid and were going to trade for him, but he gave up 2 runs to the dodgers in his first major league inning, so we are out!”

      the whole thing is ridiculous, he should be the third or fourth option out of the pen right now, and instead they are actively holding him back

      Think about the amount of $$$ on the shelf in Snell and Glasnow and they can still roll this kid out there.

      1. Yep. Dodgers have pitchers and pitchers and pitchers. If the Philles make playoffs and face Dodgers none of this week’s Dodgers guy may be on the mound come October. Why would they give up the farm for Skubal at deadline. Just wait and simply sign him. I do agree that Skubal is a great injury candidate. Very violent delivery.

  33. Romus. Phillies only scored 1 run on 1 hit last time he pitched. However, scored several last year. It is perplexing but this is what this team is. Feast or famine. Never know which.

    Rocco. you are a good friend to cheer Romus up. I thought on the final play I was watching one of the 12U games end. But it was not. I told Ruff 2 or 3. Now that is made a little more difficult. Kids had a great time at the 3 games. Lots of pics. Lots of autographs. Wish they had got the chance to see you. I did send Romus and Ruff some of the pics they sent.

  34. Nearly 50 years ago, to quote Billy Joel, “When I wore a younger man’s clothes” (in this case “uniform”), I played in a city championship game in New Haven. It was the bottom of the last inning and we were tied. Our first batter led off with a tripple. The opposing team walked the next two batters and brought the infield in to get a possible force out at the plate. Up comes you know who. Everyone is screaming, “Just hit a fly ball”. I would have loved to hit one up the middle but I knew all we needed was that fly ball which I hit.

    When Marsh came up last night, all the Phillies needed was a fly ball to at least tie the game. It is so difficult to “just” hit a fly ball in the major leagues or any professional league when the ball is coming into you over 90 miles an hour. I did it in a SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL game. Big difference. Therefore, I never get pissed when “all” a batter needs is to hit a fly ball. With that written, Marsh (and also Schwarber for that matter) are really slumping. Hopefully, they can come out of it soon for this really difficult stretch of games.

  35. Marsh homered Mon night and smoked a ball to the deepest part of the park Tues night that Pages ran down. Schwarber is definitely struggling.

    1. Marsh also struck out twice. That’s 21 in last 64 ABs (32.8%) dating back to June 30th. He’s batting .141 during that stretch. I think he’s struggling, too. The HR was his only extra base hit during that period.

      1. I agree, but the past 2 games he has driven the ball deep to left center, as has Harper. Im hoping that means he is letting the ball travel more.

  36. Big picture: do the Phillies have any “high IQ” baseball players, like Rollins and Utley were? I already had some doubts about JT before last night.

    In other news, Juan Parra in the DSL is getting very interesting.

    2. I’d consider it but I don’t think Tarik Skubal solves all of our problems. Even if you move Luzardo to the pen for a short series. I’d rather get a #4 starter that can piggyback with Nola in a long series. We could have beaten the Dodgers without Wheeler if Bader stays healthy and the pen executed.

      Now Mason Miller I would consider. I think that solves a lot of our issues. Bowlan/Miller/Duran. Acquire Minter or another LHP to pair with Alvarado and I think that pen is legit.

      1. Kevin Gausman would be an alternative name I’d be interested in to stabalize the back end of the rotation. Could start a game 4 or come out of the pen behind Nola as an opener.

        1. I saw Gausman listed. Also, Robbie Ray and a few others named. The one I have told Ruff and Romus I have always liked is Brady Singer. I liked him in his days at Florida. He is not a dominant guy, but he has a bulldog mentality, and you will get his best. Believe he recently went 7 or 8 solid innings vs the Phillies. For a number 5 guy I think he would fit the bill.

  40. Till last couple games Marsh has been swinging at many bad pitches lately. Told Ruff he would be better at times not taking a bat with him to the plate. Kind of flailing away.

    Deadline will be interesting. If Phillies have little wiggle room $$$ wise may not be much change. Saw Passan had his top 100 trade possibilities. He listed Phillies with 10 of top 25 he detailed. He had 2 OFs. I was surprised he had 3 catchers. Rest were most the guys mentioned pitching wise.

    Going forward the last 2 nights most likely is what this team will be the remainder of the season. The last 2 Mets games show you that you are as good as your next day starter.

    Games last night was a very good game and there will be some of those. Some will be wins. Some will be losses. Hopefully baserunning is slightly better than last night. Who is on 3B? Oops No one. Let’s get a win tonight. Duran is rested.

  42. watched first four innings of Painters start in Indiana against Guardians AAATeam. Minor leagues ranked fifth so assume pretty good squad. First 3 innings good fastball and slider/ curve pitch. But he only threw those two pitches. I think he got out of trouble in 4th inning and at least limited damage in 5th. Wonder if they said let’s get two pitches down for now OR maybe they envision some bullpenish type role down the stretch in not high stress situations just to get back on track. Too good an arm to spend rest of year in AAA.

          Romus I do not think Nola did so poorly. Dodgers are a really good lineup. Ruff was on my case why did Hoosier Donnie leave Nola in for the 6th. Look at the next 2 innings and I think you see why. Not that is was the right decision but why it was the decision.

          When Kerkering was brought in with runners on base I told Ruff at least 1 would score. Unfortunately, 4 did. I am sure I am exaggerating but I told him I did not think since 2021 he had come in to a game with runners on and left with them still on. I do not think he came up till 2023.

          Baserunning was not real solid. If I was going to have Marchan bunt since he is a switch hitter, I would have had him bat left-handed. I think it is easier to bunt from the left side. Even with LH pitcher. His technique was not good.

          Guys have given this stat the last couple games since mid-June the Phillies are 17-2 in starts by Sanchez, Wheeler, and Luzardo. 1 and whatever in starts by all others. Therein lies a significant issue. If no length in the start the Phillies BP guys just have a really difficult time keeping the game in a winnable position.

    1. That is with many generous decisions by official scorekeeper. Simply Phillies are not even close to being in the same discussion with the Dodgers at this time. Most likely the 3 starters in series do not pitch if the teams happen to meet again in October. They have like a fourth of their team on the IL. Some are at least returning by the playoffs.

Let’s be honest…the Dodgers are a significantly better team than the Phillies and I find it hard to believe that we can close the gap during this trade deadline even if we sell our entire farm system. The gap is just too big. They have a much deeper lineup, a pitching staff that can definitely hang with our top 3 and is also deeper (especially in the playoffs) and is also a far better defensive team. We have a lot of top end talent, but our lineup and pitching depth are weak. I am sure that DD is going to go all in. He kinda has to. We are pot committed and he can’t be seen as the guy who didn’t give our roster a chance. That’s not his style anyway. But I find it hard to see how we can beat the Dodgers in a 7 game series.

    1. I know you rely on metric. But a blind squirrel could tell you. Realmuto as a hitter was done . Nola was in decline, you don’t have a right hand bat. DD one move would have changed this team let Nola walk sign ranger. If he did that We could sell the farm for a big bat. Now we can’t. We are four players short imo. Starting pitching. Bullpen arm and right hand bat. DD should be fired along with our farm director. The purpose of minor league is to develop players, Eagles know that, one guy walks they have replacement

      1. Yes, of all the contract extensions Nola’s was by far the worst. He was a shell of his former self and you extend him!

        Can’t believe front office thought that he was a better option than Ranger. I said last year, we had to keep Ranger until we were sure Painter was the real deal. Now that he isn’t we have a huge hole.

        Can’t make playoffs if we are not competive with two of our starters. Need to generate some wins when Nola and Rangel start or else we play .500 ball at best the rest of the way.

      What was it BH said a few seasons back after a playoff series win “this is why you spend the money”

      The top 3 pitchers are doing their part and a part of me would feel bad for them but I can’t feel bad for BH, Turner or even Kyle. I still enjoy watching them play though.

    1. Few thoughts:

      On Nola, 2 points. When he was resigned, he wasn’t this “Nola”, it was the Nola coming off 2 postseason runs. Nola & Wheeler formed the best 1-2 Punch in the league at the time, or at least up there. Sanchez wasn’t on the scene yet, but Painter was supposedly coming along as well. Then you had Ranger, who wasn’t without concerns. Yes, he has the “it” factor in the playoffs. Nola, seems to setup up as well in Big games, he’s even done it recently;y in his junky years. Last point, ATL was hot after him as well. They would’ve given him very close to this deal. DD was not alone in his thinking, its just hindsight has made It more clear. If Painter was who everyone expected him to be, it really all didn’t matter imho.

      Stats that can help close the gap between the tops teams:

      Phils have about a 3-1 win/loss ratio when Wheeler, Sanchez, or Luzardo start vs a 1-3 ratio when Nola/5th start take the mound. Trading the farm for Skubal could be a smart move. You can argue Miller as well, ride those 3 with Miller & Duran in the BP to end it. Win close games. Last point I’d make is that Bohm, while I root for him… hits into a lot of DP. Killing the offense. If the team wants to win, Turner moves off SS. Push him to 3rd or LF… possibly CF. I’m sure he’ll do well enough and get another bat in here. Im tempted to put Sosa at 3B, everyday or 2B, Stott to SS. Pickup a bat that can hit LHP. That’s the best shot imo. Promote the young arms for BP, roll the dice on who’s left from Wood, Painter, McFarlane.

        Friedman doesn’t have those concerns but as I have said many times they will get the bill too. For now the Phillies should keep their powder dry.

    3. Ranger hasn’t pitched since the 13th of June and that has consistently been the knock on him despite how extraordinary he is when he does pitch.

      Nola consistently was a 30+ starts guy

    4. Rocco – let me start with a few points.

      First, Nola isn’t better than Ranger. I wouldn’t choose Nola over Ranger today or last year and even probably before that (Ranger is one of my favorite Phillies of all time – I love the guy). Ranger is better and his contract is better. All things being equal, I’d trade Ranger and his contract for Nola and his contract in a heartbeat.

      Second, Nola’s contract is why, even when a team thinks it has money to spend/burn, you try never, ever to do a contract you are not comfortable is and will remain a good contract. Because even if you have money today, at some point, a bad contract will restrict your ability to sign a player you would prefer to pay in the future – and the Nola versus Ranger situation is a great example of that as it is true that, if the Phillies didn’t have the Nola contract they could have re-signed Ranger.

      Third, putting aside whether Nola’s contract was defensible when he was signed (hindsight is 20/20 – at the time nobody ever thought he would be this bad but it certainly has been really bad and, like a typical DD contract, far too long), the choice AT THE TIME was not Nola versus Ranger. First, Ranger was several years away from free agency at the time – so there literally was no reason to choose. Second, at the time they did the Nola signing, Jesus Luzardo wasn’t on the team, so there was every reason to think, at the time, that they could sign Nola and Ranger. But once Luzardo came in later, the team was up against the salary tax threshold with Nola’s contract helping to get them there, it was clear that only Ranger or Luzardo could be signed. But before then it was never a “choose Nola or Ranger” situation as people believed they could keep both.

  57. Look, I am no Nola defender, and I get that their 5th spot in the rotation has been an auto-L every time and that needs to change.

    But having said that, would it kill the offense to pick up the team every now and then? In his starts this season, he has given up 5, 3, 2, 3, 7, 2, 2, 2, 3, 5…im not going to list every start but this is who he is. Would it KILL the offense to step up and give teh team a 9-6 win in some of these?

    It almost feels like when its not one of the big 3 on the mound, the offense doesnt show up to play. Its like if you dont get off work on christmas eve, but everyone just comes in the office and fucks around and does nothing of value and it kind of becomes a “shadow off day” thats how the lineup seems to treat non-sanchez/wheeler/luzardo games

      1. Romus. Not sure they press. It is a challenge for any team to play catch up down 4 or 5. But last night it was 3-3 after 5 and Phillies maybe had momentum till Stott play. You see that play all the time in travel with little guys and they wing it over to first. Made no difference it there were 2 outs. Make the easy play and Muncy did so.

        They sent Nola back for 6th knowing he was on fumes but who in the BP do you trust. Maybe that 6th inning might have been a good time for Alvarado but that is a huge risk as well. Nola and Seth for the lefties not the best idea. Oh well.

        I do agree there is a huge gap between Dodgers and Phillies. But in a short series with Sanchez, Wheeler, and Luzardo it might be possible. I prefer the 5 game series vs Dodgers to the 7 games. Best team usually wins the 7-game series.

    Romus – Interesting how you used “rot.” to abbreviate “rotation” but rot does represent and describe that 5th starter.

    Don – I believe Alvarado had pitched clean innings in the previous 2 games so they wouldn’t use him for 3 in a row.

  61. He was ok. Fly to CF. Ground ball to Stott off of his foot. Grounder to Harper. No walks. Think there was a single as well. All of these run together.

    If Alvarado was used Monday, he would not have pitched 3. I was just thinking who I might trust. He has a little. Not a lot.

  62. The Phillies are so much worse than the Dodgers – it’s not really close. That doesn’t mean the Phillies couldn’t steal a playoff series from the Dodgers, but there’s a reason the Dodgers have won 2 WS in a row and will be favored again and are one of the main reasons there will be a work stoppage.
