The Phillies have announced the players they are sending to the Arizona Fall League. The Phillies’ players will participate as members of the Glendale Desert Dogs. The other teams sending players to the Desert Dogs are the Cardinals, Dodgers, Reds, and White Sox.
Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo, and Sam Dykstra published an extensive article with the names of all participants. None of our guys in their Top 100 were named. The Phillies players are:
- Bryan Rincon, SS (Phillies No. 10 prospect per MLB)
- Gabriel Rincones Jr. (No. 11)
- Wen-Hui Pan, RHP (No. 20)
- Griff McGarry, RHP (No. 21)
- Christian McGowan, RHP (No. 22)
- Otto Kemp, 3B/2B (No. 28)
- Jordan Dissin, C
- Tristan Garnett, LHP
- Wesley Moore, LHP
Their writeup about a couple of our guys is: “A premium defender the Phillies took in the 14th round of the 2022 Draft, Rincon had shaken off a rough April in a move to High-A this year and was playing well in May when a hamstring injury kept him out until late August. His glove is well ahead of his bat, so facing the pitching in the AFL should be a good challenge for him. After a very solid showing in the AFL last year (.889 OPS), Rincones seemed poised for a jump to the upper levels of the system, but a torn thumb ligament limited him to just 68 total games, so he’s back to hit the reset button.”
Greg Brodzinski, the Jersey Shore Blue Claws manager, will attend as a coach. Meaghan Flaherty, Athletic Trainer for Reading, will attend in the same role.

It’s obvious that most of the players being sent were those who missed a considerable amount of time. Not sure why Otto Kemp is going since he played in 123 games. I’m assuming Kemp is going to get more reps at 2B?

Time for McGarry to shine once again in relief….he could be showcased out there…loaded with other team scouts for the 30 game season.

His career minor league walk rate is 6.8 over 203.1 innings. He needs to get that under 4. I’m not holding my breath.

Have you seen him pitch recently? Right now, he’s just another guy. He can barely hit 94 or 95 and has no control. This is a fish or cut bait exercise in my opinion.

Kind of a disappointing list to be honest. Rincon and Rincones and Pan are fine, but the others are not really MLB prospects imo. I was hoping to see Painter, Crawford and/or Miller. I guess Mick Abel is going into the lab for mechanics fixing. For some reason the Phillies have a tradition of sending non-prospects to the AFL.

Zero chance Painter was going. They are tightly controlling his rehab work.

Matt Winkelman seems to think Otto Kemp might be a legit prospect, for what it’s worth: https://philliesminorthoughts.com/phillies-minor-league-monthly-retrospective-september-and-full-season-2024/

I saw Tristan Garnett pitch some Spring Training Games, and a few at Reading, and minus some control issues, I liked what I saw. Relief pitchers are a strange breed, and can come out of nowhere.

Crawford on the broadcast talking about playing for team USA. That’s why he’s not going to Arizona.
