Box Score Recap (9/5/24)

Lehigh Valley was shut out on 3 hits.  Reading lost and was also held to 3 hits.  Aidan Miller collected another hit.  He has 3 in 3 games at Double-A.  Braeden Fausnaught (8), Tommy McCollum (6), and Andrew Schultz (4) combined to strike out 18 batters. Jersey Shore won by shut out in a lop-sided rout.  Luke Russo pitched six scoreless innings.  Keaton Anthony had 4 hits and a HR.  Clearwater won. Devin Saltiban hit his 17th HR.


Lehigh Valley (29-29, 63-68, tied for sixth place, 4.5 games back with 16 games remaining) Lost to Buffalo, 8-0.  Kolby Allard lasted 4.1 innings (78 pitches, 46 strikes, 58.9%).  He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk.  He struck out two and threw a wild pitch.  Jonah Dipoto entered with the bases empty in the fifth and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.  He hit 2 batters and walked one.  Andrew Bellatti pitched one inning nd gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk.  Yunior Marte pitched one inning with the same line, 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk.

The IronPigs managed just 3 singles on offense by Carlos De La Cruz, Diego Gonzalez, and Trevor SchwekeGonzalez also had a stolen base, his first with the IronPigs. Schweke and Gonzalez drew 2 of the team’s 4 walks along with Buddy Kennedy and Matt Kroon.

Reading (25-35, 56-72, fifth place, eliminated from post season, 9 games remaining) Lost to Erie 5-1.  Braeden Fausnaught pitched five innings and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks.  He threw 99 pitches, 66 strikes, 66.7%.  He struck out 8 and gave up a HR.  Tommy McCollum pitched two scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and a walk.  He struck out six.  Andrew Schultz gave up a run in two innings on 3 hits striking out four.

Reading scored their only run in the first inning when already trailing by three runs.  They loaded the bases on singles by Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller and a walk by Gabriel Rincones.  With nobody out they managed to score just one run on an RBI force out by Otto Kemp.  They opened the second with a double by Erick Brito and a walk by Zach Arnold.  Then they saw 22 consecutive batters retired until a one-out walk by Otto Kemp in the ninth.

Jersey Shore (34-29, 72-57, second place, eliminated from post season when Hudson Valley won, 3 games remaining) beat Aberdeen, 15-0.  Luke Russo pitched six scoreless innings for the win (99 pitches, 59 strikes, 59.6%).  He allowed 4 hits and 4 walks.  He struck out 4, hit a batter, and threw a wild pitch.  Jake Eddington pitched a scoreless inning walking 2 and striking out one.  Alex Garbrick pitched a scoreless inning walking one.  Ethan Chenault pitched a scoreless inning walking one and striking out two.

The BlueClaws scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Hendry Mandez.  They scored 4 more runs in the second on an RBI single by Emaarion Boyd, a double steal. a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Keaton Anthony.  They scored a run in the third on a double play.  They continued to pile on runs with 4 in the fourth on an RBI single by Trent Farquhar, a wild pitch, and a 2-run triple by Bryson Ware.  And closed out the scoring with 5 runs in the sixth on a solo HR (4) by Anthony, a 3-run double by Pierce Bennett, and an RBI ground out by Jordan Dissin.

The BlueClaws amassed 17 hits and 6 walks.  Seven starters had multi-hit games – Boyd, Farquhar, Mendez, Ware, Bennett, and Schreffler had 2 hits each.  Anthony had 4 hits.  They also stole 6 bases – Boyd snatched 2 (25), Schreffler 3 (20), and Farquhar 1 (17).

Clearwater (19-39, 62-62, last place but 1st half winners, 3 games remaining before playoffs) Beat St. Lucie, 6-5 in a rain-shortened eight innings.  Danyony Pulido pitched five innings and gave up 4 unearned runs on 2 hits and a walk (66 pitches, 43 strikes, 65.2%).  He struck out five.  He faced the minimum batters through four no-hit innings.  He was victimized by his defense in the fifth, 2 errors led to 4 unearned runs.  Jose Pena pitched a scoreless inning allowing a hit and a walk.  He threw a wild pitch.  Saul Teran pitched one inning allowing a run on a hit and a walk.  He struck out one.  Titan Hayes picked up his first save with one scoreless inning allowing a walk.

The Threshers opened the scoring with a run in the first inning on a solo HR (17) by Devin Saltiban.  They added a run in the third on an RBI single by Eduardo Tait.  After falling behind by 2 in the top of the fifth, the Threshers scored 4 of their own on bases-loaded walks by Joel Dragoo and Kodey Shojinaga and a 2-run single by Brady Day.

  1. New Inquirer article in which Miller discusses learning from his “first taste of failure” when he struggled at Jersey Shore. A good sign.

  2. Keaton Anthony probably needs to be in the new top 30 after the season…..slashing 342/.430/.477……K-rate-15%….BB-rate-12%…..and perhaps let him develop more in an OF corner, along with at 1B….57 games so far in the OF from 2021 ( at Iowa) thru last year.

      1. Crawford will likely make his debut around summer 2025. Maybe sooner if Rojas has a poor start again.

        Rincones will need to stay healthy and go wild at Lehigh to force the Phillies to think about trading Castellanos.

        Note that Anthony has only played 1B/DH in his minor league career. He can hit but it’ll be interesting to see where he fits into the Phillies’ plans.
