Rain forced a postponement of Lehigh Valley’s first game in their Scranton series. Reading lost in a ninth inning walk off although they protected a one-run lead on 2 runs and 2 hits until the ninth. Jersey Shore scored 10 runs and won when the games was called in the seventh inning. Clearwater got pummeled but scored 5 late runs. DSL Red lost; DSL White won.
The 20th prospect was vacated when Simon Muzziotti was released yesterday. I’ll leave it blank until we see if they move everyone from 21 through 30 up one and move NPG back into the top 30 or if someone else is inserted instead.
The Phillies acquired a couple minor leaguers. CF Ryan McKenna was signed as a free agent and assigned to Lehigh Valley. RHP Nelson Alvarez was picked up in a trade with Tampa Bay for cash and hasn’t been assigned yet. McKenna is a depth move just in case their deadline move doesn’t work out and he is probably considered an upgrade over Muzziotti. Alvarez gives them another arm in the upper minors where they are a little short especially after releasing Parkinson and placing Pipkin on the full season injury list. These are just opinions and not based on any hard facts.

I’m sorry to hear Pipkin is hurt again. How serious? I had hoped that he’d go to the AZ Fall League and then be in play next season for a call up but his injuries keep derailing him.

I don’t think he ever really recovered from his last injury/rehab. I heard he was still experiencing discomfort when pitching.

Ricky – give me a freaking break, we don’t know that yet. He’s 18, did fine in the summer league, has good plate discipline and is adjusting to a new level. You can’t make that determination now.
One thing I’ll note is that the team has done a great job with undrafted free agents. Keaton Anthony and Otto Kemp have had great years. Normally, I’d say let both players finish out where they are, but Anthony has so dominated high A ball, that I might want to see him in AA for a few weeks. This kid might legitimately have a 65 hit tool which, along with solid plate discipline, makes him a very interesting player. But if he wants to progress on this team, in addition to showing even a little power, he’s going to need to learn to play the outfield – I have no idea whether that’s possible or not.
On Rincones, the concern is contact. He has good power and plate discipline, but he is striking out way too much. If he can’t make more contact, he’s going to struggle at higher levels. We’ll see.

he hit like sub .250 in rookie ball this year (where he has spent almost all the season) with very little pop…now moved up and looks overmatched….will see

Looks that way early on….glove, no hit, speedy smallish middle infielder. Phillies specialize in those traits of Latin players. They just cannot seem to generally dial up continual jackpot winning Latin signees like most MLB teams, especially teams like the Yankees, Dodger, Padres, Sox et al.

Romus, we’ll see on Caba, but your criticism of the organization’s historical selection of LA infielders is spot on. This is what Sal Agostinelli gave us not just on infielders but outfielders too. Skinny little guys who could field and run. Over and over and over and over again. It was fine as far as it went, but no impact players. He’s not in the mix anymore, thank God, but it was the definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Amazes me how teams like the Pirates and Reds can come up with Latin players…especially this time with tall gangling middle infielders who are impact players….Cruz-Pirates and De La Cruz-Reds. Give me a break! Right now Phillies’ Latin hopes rest on Johan Rojas and if he can come around at the bat….maybe also Marchan after this season.

Well, Sal did okay with catchers. He found Chooch and he found Marchan. Marchan is legit. He’s a major league player right now. The only issue, to me, is whether he’s going to be a second division or first division regular, which will turn on his offensive production. I think he can play and he’s already better than Stubbs, although that’s a pretty low bar.
LikeLike
I thought I read a story years ago that Chooch came up as a 2B and struggled mightily. Upon returning home to Panama and telling his father he was done with baseball in the states his dad told him to give it one more shot. I believe the Phillies, the next year, converted him to catcher and the rest is history.

Oh yeah, George Klassen struck out 10 in 5 innings in his first start for the Angels. Yeah, he walked 3 but damn, giving up a guy like that for a 2-month rental is so painful.

To quote from above. “Give me a freaking break, we don’t know that yet”.
Guess we can add whining about Klassen to the list along with Brown, Mead, etc. Good for Klassen, hope he has great success.
Also, we shouldn’t have concerns about Caba yet but should about Miller because of his slow start in JS?
Didn’t I just read “Starting to share your concern about Aidan Miller. Not sure what’s going on, but this is troubling. He’s not even treading water at the plate. “

hmmmm
A couple of responses.
First, Caba is 18 and has had 30 ABs in Clearwater. That’s a ridiculously small sample size. Second, he’s a big prospect as much for his defense as for his offense.
As for Miller, he’s 20 and, while I know he plays shortstop, he isn’t there primarily for his defense. He’s there to hit. He had over 130 Abs in high A and was struggling more than a little bit (although, admittedly, his walk rate was very good). It wasn’t a ridiculously small sample size. It was cause for concern in my view, but I hope to God I’m wrong, it’s a speed bump and the kid does great. But it’s really not an apples-to-apples comparison with Caba.
As for Klassen, sure I wish him well, but the entire industry is essentially saying the Phillies seriously overpaid for Estevez. I’m not alone. Is it worth it? I guess we’ll see. My consolation is that, knowing DD, it could have been worse.

ILO of that trade, Phillies may be forced to resign Estevez … especially if they do not get to the WS and/or win.

If DD didn’t get a closer or did nothing, he would have gotten ripped. Now he’s getting ripped for paying the price for the best closer available. I guess you have to have a thick skin when you’re the Phillies GM.

Yes, that’s why he’s paid the big bucks. Look, he obviously had to do something, but that doesn’t mean you can’t scrutinize what he did. We do not have a fully stocked farm system, so he had to make tough decisions about the future of the team while trying to ensure they were making every effort to try to win this year. At least he doesn’t trade every prospect in sight like the Padres. As I said, it could have been worse.

To everyone! Miller is playing through a leg injury that he can’t make worse by playing. Please adjust criticism accordingly. And please consider that any struggling player might have a similar issue.

Crawford goes to Reading and Surprisingly seems to have had a “ Growth Development Spurt. Jersey Shore numbers were Good More than Holding His Own. Just thought He would Stay There for the Year. Then Reading, and He Is taking a Step Up in Competition, but A Step Up in Development so far sustaining well above .300 Numbers. Is it Real or a Spurt?

I think Crawford (a first round pick) did enough to justify his promotion to Reading. He played in 88 games total for JS.
Historically, Reading has been a hitter’s park so watching Crawford (who has a .300+ career minor league batting average) hit there as well was not surprising. He’s still only 20 and probably still getting stronger. The hope is that he starts tapping into his power as he gets older. His dad was slugging .450 as a 22 year old.
I think he’ll get invited to ST and we’ll see how he does there.

yes My next thought was, the power, but He is 20 years Old it was Better for Him to be a Hitter , then Develop Power as He Develops.

Justin so far, seems to be more of a hitter along the lines of his cousin JP Crawford than his father.

Just an FYI – 8 of the 12 games that Justin has played thus far at the AA level have been road games – he’s 6 for 17 at home – 5 singles, 1 double and 10 for 33 on the road – 7 singles, 3 doubles. He’s tacked on about 15 pounds of upper body strength – was a recommended choice from me for the AFL (he likely goes) and will almost certainly get an ST invite this coming year. He’s a great kid as well, really inviting personality who loves to compete on the field. Wait till ya all see him throw the baseball, he has a Rojas like arm – in ST I watched him hit the plate in the air from just in front of the CF warning track – really impressive. Sorry to interrupt – just my two cents.

Crawford’s best tool is his command of the Strike Zone. He doesn’t get himself out chasing pitches out of the zone.
He will naturally get stronger and as long as he sticks with his approach the XBHs will come.
It also can be tough to hit in the minors when you aren’t getting to see pitchers as frequently as you might in the MLB.

I wish Klassen well…..but this team is built to win now. We need bullpen help and DD went out to get it. Your not going to get effective players for nothing. The Phillies replaced SirAnthony, Soto and Pache for Estevez, Banks and Hayes on the current roster. All upgrades. Good for the Angels if their starting pitching is improved in 2026 via the trade. We all know how close the Phillies were to winning the World Series the last 2 years…had our chances against the Astros and loosing 2 home games against the D-Backs is almost unreal.

The midseason update for MLB Pipeline should be happening in the next week.
With the release of Simon Muzziotti (not surprised), Mavis Graves has entered in at 30.
Mick Abel is a lock to drop out of the top 100 but I think there’s a chance that Tait slips in.
Nori and Burkholder will likely both slot into the top 12.
Spikerman, DeMartini, Mathison should get into the top 30.
I’m expecting Mercado, CDL, McGarry, Rodriguez to be removed from the top 30.

Not sure how you can justify Abel ahead of Crawford. Mercado at 10 makes no sense if he’s not a starter.

Agreed. At this point, Abel should probably be behind Crawford (for sure) and Tait. But this also shows how shallow the system is in top prospects.

Yes, Mavis Graves cracked the top 30. I entered him above. Everyone else behind #20 moved up one spot. With Graves at Clearwater, the Threshers have 8 of the top 30.
Muzziotti’s release drops the number of prospects at Lehigh Valley to 4. Reading is at 8 (plus the suspended player), Jersey Shore at 6, the FCL at 2, and 1 in the DSL.

5 pitch mix – 4S FB, 2S/Sinker – Cutter that’s basically a slider but they call it a cutter for him from a higher slot.
A CB that is more of a sweeper Slider with depth. A very good Change up. FBs will be 91-94, CT is mid 80, Low 80 CB, low to mid 80 change up.
