Box Score Recap (5/28/24)

Lehigh Valley won with a big ninth inning.  Reading lost.  Jersey Shore won a one-run game.  Clearwater lost the first game of an important series against second-place Lakeland.  The FCL Phillies won a one-run game.

FCL Phillies (9-9) beat the Tigers 6-5.  Danyony Pulido started and pitched four innings.  He gave up 4 runs (3 ER) on 4 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out eight.  Luis Gonzalez got the win.  He pitched three innings and gave up one run on 3 hits and a walk.  He struck out three.  Rehabbing Jonh Henriquez pitched one inning, allowed one hit, and struck out one.  Luis Avila pitched a scoreless inning, walked one, and picked up his third save.

The Phillies fell behind by four runs.  They began their comeback with 3 runs in the third inning on a 2-run double by Aroon Escobar and an RBI single by Eduardo Tait.  After the Tigers picked up another run, the Phillies took the lead with three runs in the seventh on a 2-run single by Rickardo Perez and an RBI single by Ezra Farmer.

I think it was yesterday that Starlyn Caba’s BB and K rates were mentioned.  It was noted that he had a much higher BB rate than K rate.  I thought it worth mentioning that Aroon Escobar also has more walks than strikeouts, 14/7 in 72 PA.  His rates aren’t quite as good as Caba’s, but he’s built like a fullback and is probably going to be expected to be a power hitter.  So, his rates are probably inspiring, too.

  1. Good to see that Tait’s numbers are slowly starting to improve after a terrible start to the season.

Just need to keep remembering that he’s still not yet 18.

    1. Tait….just 17 years old is pysically very well structured for a teenager…..typically not found like that…….also Jalvin Arias another recent international signee.

      1. The developmental difference between a 17 year-old and an 18 or 19 year-old can be enormous. Fernando Tatis, Jr. had a .742 OPS in rookie ball as a 17 year-old. 17 year-old Willie Mays had a .638 OPS in Negro league ball. 17 year-old Ted Williams had a .654 OPS in AA ball. Even wunderkind Robin Yount, had a .779 OPS when he was 17. By comparison, Ken Griffey, Jr. had an OPS above 1.000 when he was 17 – he was ridiculous.

If Tait shows plate discipline and gets his share of hits as a 17-year old – he’s way ahead of the game.

        1. Curiously,  I checked out Bryce Harper’s 17-year old stats…..only 39 PA…but in the AFL of all places,  facing 21 and 22 year old pitchers…OPS of 1.039. And also Mike Trout’s stats…..between both rookie and low-A…..905 OPS. Tait seems to be coming along well now….here’s hoping he can raise that OPS another .125 or .150  % points before the end of the season to get it at least over .700.

  2. Miller 3 BBs is super impressive. I love seeing a young man that refuses to get himself out. I was hoping to get out to LKW this week but its not going to happen.

Maybe next week if they are in town we’ll see but I am already going to Mondays game. Wife and grabbed tickets because we wanted to be part of Rhys’ standing ovation…

    Hoping he plays…

Last tidbit Marchan needs to stay healthy. Now 25 he needs to be on the field to be part of the change over that will occur at some point.

    1. Aidan has a 13.9% BB rate. Really impressive for a 19yo with a .531 slugging percentage. 49% of Miller’s hits are either doubles or homers. So this kid is driving the ball and also taking pitches. Really impressive to see at such a young age.

    1. Yes, we absolutely need to start looking at Ricketts as a real prospect. He’s a 7th rounder who is developing just as we would like. My understanding is that his defense is developing as is his hitting. There’s a decent chance he could be Realmuto’s back-up next year so the team can assess what they want to do when Realmuto’s contract ends.

He’s a very pleasant surprise and we need to take him seriously. Good prospects blossom in AA – that’s what’s happening with Ricketts.

  3. Two other names to monitor – Casey Steward and Otto Kemp. Yes, they’re older, but they are both doing quite well. Steward throws mid-90s, so we should keep our eye on him. I won’t take either too seriously until they are doing something in AA, but they are on the radar now.

Also interested to see if and when Crawford progresses. So far, this has been a mildly disappointing year for him. We all like to blow off the “experts” but, for all of his athleticism, the experts said he was going to have trouble progressing due to his swing path and that seems to be the case.

    1. Interesting point … scouts said similar things about Aidan Miller and he seems to have adjusted super quick. It can be done, hopefully something clicks for Crawford before the end of the year.

    2. Crawford had a long slump which made me think he was likely working on new things. Since then he’s been doing ok, not great but again I’m hoping he’s working on things.
Marcus Sang really started the test in a funk. However he has rebounded up to 260, good for him. He and Bergolla are hitting over 300 in May. With these kids, the yearly average is not the only thing to look at for sure.

I really really like what I see from Aroon. All the things you mentioned are right. Really great to see a few high upside prospects performing so well.

  5. What are the odds of Aidan Miller moving up to Lakewood before Crawford moves on to Reading? I have one trip to Lakewood in me per season and would love to see both of these kids at the same time. Hope I’m not being too greedy!

    1. The Development Team creates an individual development plan for each player. The plans are way more than average, HRs, ERA, etc. We can’t tell by looking at a box score how close a player is to promotion. That said, here are some things to consider.

1.) The Phillies don’t mind keeping a group together from one level to another. That’s not a hard and fast rule, see Orion Kerkering last season.

2.) Miller is likely exceeding his plan, but they would still like to pushback a promotion until the first half is completed.

3.) Ideally, they would like to see a player, including Miller, face some sort of setback so they can see how he deals with it. For instance, does he revert back to old habits, see Michael Franco during his Phillies career.

The FSL first half ends on Sunday June 23rd, I think. FWIW, Rincones was promoted on June 13th last season, about two weeks before the end of the first half. But, the Threshers had an 11.5 game lead and had all but clinched the half with 12 games remaining.

Crawford wasn’t promoted to Jersey Shore until August 15th. Hope this helps.

  6. Ive always thought that Marchan could be a starting catcher in the bigs. We know JT isnt going anywhere, but I hope they dont trade him unless its in a big “go for it” deal
