2023 Draft, Day One: July 9th

The 2023 Draft Tracker will be updated as picks and signings are announced.  However, I can’t promise that I’ll be posting daily draft articles.  As in previous years, NDFA’s will be included in the draft tracker.

I can no longer auto-share articles on Twitter.  They have greatly increased the cost of API access for sites like WordPress that use JetPack Social to share.  Rather than pass the prohibitive cost on to customers, the use of API Twitter was discontinued.

I can still share manually on Twitter and will continue to do so until I find a better social media application.  Before learning of this change, I had become increasingly dissatisfied with Twitter anyway.  I’ll be checking into Tumblr, Mastodon, Instagram, and Threads.

  1. Great to have you back Jim. I never realized how my much Phuture Phillies was a part of my daily life until it wasn’t anymore.

    1. Jim, Welcome Back!

Hope you are 100 percent and ready to rock.

This site is a huge part of my daily life. I checked it every day to see if you were open for business.

Like v1, I love the Aidan Miller pick.

I finally saw the Threshers a few weeks ago. Justin Crawford is no doubt a great talent, and they say he’s picked up weight since last year. But his arms and legs are super-thin. Hope he fills out.

      Again, welcome back!

    1. Philliesphans has a daily posting. Not much action but those that do, including, occasionally, Matt Winkleman, are insightful and not your typical mouthbreather crowd.

Nothing like the OG PP though. I’ve read this site for 15 years and am so glad that Jim was able to bring it back!

  5. Hi guys. I just thought I would check. Great to see. Hope all is well Jim.
I have missed everyone. I too like the pick for the Phillies. I hope they are ready for a big second half. Couple downers after the the 13 straight.

  6. So glad PP is back! Well, at least for tonight lol

I thought we had NO SHOT at drafting Aidan Miller. Wow. He could be the Phillies’ answer to Austin Riley.

I think coaches will try to mess with that hitch in his swing, but hopefully not to his detriment.

Either way, Brian Barber has proven himself to be a very competent executive. Love this pick.

  7. Aidan Miller seems to be a high risk high reward pick. He missed his senior year with hamate surgery and supposedly has trouble with inside pitches, which is not unique. I don’t know if he’s back playing yet.
Welcome back all of PP and certainly Jim.

  8. Like this pick……experts gripe about the age factor…but he was 18 a month before the draft!
Mets’ 3B Batty and Marlins’ LHP Rogers from past drafts were older picks in thier respective drafts….maybe even older than Miller.

    1. Glad to see this site back up!

I took a look at Baty’s minor league numbers, and was shocked that Baty played 51 games in the minors the year he was drafted. Not sure if Miller will get to that, especially coming off injury. Baty has a career minor league OPS of .903. Baty is struggling in the the bigs, but I think if Miller comes close to .900 OPS in the minors, we’ll gladly take that and see what happens.

      1. Yeah..agree.
Quite honestly, I did not expect either of Baty or Rogers to get to the majors as soon as they did when they were drafted, because of their older age. I thought they would both struggle in the minors and their HS numbers were inflated/exagerated because they were so much older than their counterparts. But to their credit they did well.
I hope Miller can sign early and also get some professional bats in before FILs start in October.

        1. It’s true that Miller is older than the average HS senior, but he’s not like crazy old. As a comparison:

Justin Crawford: Jan. 13, 2004 (18 when drafted)
Aidan Miller: June 9, 2004 (19 when drafted)

Brett Baty and Trevor Rogers were drafted at age 19 and both turned 20 later that year.

  19. I really like the draft. Here is how I see it:
    1. a big time steal. very excited for this pick.
    3. lottery ticket. doesn’t seem like a really high upside, but does seem like a lower risk player. wouldn’t surprise me if he was under slot.
    4. pure lottery ticket. elite athlete. raw. will struggle for a few years but maybe will make it. wouldn’t surprise me if he was under slot.
    6. LOVE this pick. back end of bull pen arm. could be a fast riser if he can find command
    7. another bullpen arm. wouldn’t surprise me if he was under slot.
    8. Senior. org filler. will be under slot
    9. org filler. will be under slot

Hoping these under slot deals result in another high impact signing, but I feel like it is all to sign Miller who projected to go higher. We will see. Hinkie thinks it is the former.

    1. Well summarized,

I don’t think I can argue with a single pick (but then again, what do I know).

It seems like instead of drafting 4th and 5th year seniors on day 2 and signing them for under slot, they chose to grab some high school guys with upside, who I am sure they have under slot deals in place with. And the college guys they did grab have at least a tool or two that could possibly work in the majors, 100mph fastballs, for example. Gone are they days of the scrappy college middle infielder or the with no significant upside.

Saltiban wasn’t expected to go for a couple more rounds, I imagine their deal with him may save them $100-200K.

I do think Miller is going to cost more than slot at the 27th pick. He could easily bet on himself, go to college for a couple years, and end up a top 10 pick, he has some leverage. That said, I don’t think the would select him if they couldn’t sign him.

Walton, the big 4th rounder is the player I am most excited about other than Miller. Could be a steal if they can unlock the power.

I’m not sure I can remember a draft that felt more like they really went into it looking for the “best player available”. Obviously money/signability is always a factor, but this draft makes sense for where they are. Lots of risk, but also a lot of high ceilings.

  21. UDFA signing …OF Keaton Anthony could be a real steal.
Big guy 6’4″, 220 lbs with power.
Unfortunate circumstances in the last part of the season, may have contributed to him going undrafted….under investigation for sports betting along with a few of his Iowa Hawkeye teammates.
But was looked at as a a possible top 10 round pick a few months ago.
Phillies could have a diamond in the rough with Anthony.

    1. Romus, appreciate the post. Yeah, players who slip due to temporary circumstances often can end up being steals. His BB/K are almost even, pretty good for a power hitter.

      1. And against Big Ten pitching for the most part. That conference may not have the cache like the SEC or ACC, but they still have some good baseball schools with quality pitchers. In the draft 17 Big Ten pitchers were selected and 10 were selected between the 4th and 10th round…the rest were 3rd day selections.
I hope Anthony can put that episode of his college life behind him and hope any legal matters get settled so he can concentrate on his professional baseball career.
Seems kids from the state of Georgia develop into excellent baseball prospects and players.

As previously mentioned, there are some really intriguing numbers with Russo – most notably his CSW%, which ranked third nationally.

    2. Paul Skenes, 37.3%
